Choose an outlet box by how and when it will be installed, its listed wiring-method compatibility and capacity, and its fit with the wall, framing, and device. Check the exact model’s instructions and local requirements; have a qualified electrician handle installation or resolve uncertain conditions.

New-work boxes are generally fitted while framing or the wall is open, while old-work or retrofit boxes are designed for finished-wall openings. Some models support more than one installation situation, so do not rely on the category name alone: verify the product listing and mounting instructions.

What to Compare Before Choosing

Before selecting a box, compare its intended installation, wiring-method listing, volume and fill information, device fit, mounting hardware, dimensions, and compatibility with the wall and framing. Local code requirements can vary, so confirm what applies where the work is being done.

Selection factor What to check
Installation stage Whether the box is intended for new work, a finished-wall retrofit, or both.
Wiring method The wiring methods the exact box is listed and designed to accept.
Capacity The marked or listed volume and manufacturer fill information for the actual installation.
Wall and framing Dimensions, depth, mounting hardware, wall finish, and fit with wood or steel framing as applicable.
Device and layout Gang count, device size, orientation, and available space for the intended equipment.
Local requirements The code and amendments adopted by the state or local authority having jurisdiction.

New-Work and Old-Work Boxes

New-work boxes are installed while framing or the wall is open. Old-work, also called retrofit, boxes are made to fit an opening in a finished wall. The mounting arrangement differs by product: manufacturer catalogs describe options such as stud mounting, adjustable brackets, and ears or clamps for finished-wall installation.

Do not assume every box labeled for one category is restricted to that use, or that every box can be installed in either situation. ABB lists its Carlon B125AB as a single-gang nonmetallic box for new-work and old-work stud-mount applications. Check the exact model’s instructions to confirm the approved mounting method for your project.

Confirm Wiring Compatibility and Capacity

A box must be listed and suitable for the wiring method used. For example, ABB’s catalog entry for the Carlon B121ADJ says that model is designed and listed for nonmetallic-sheathed cable under NEC Article 314. That product-specific statement should not be generalized to other boxes or wiring systems.

Capacity is another key selection factor. Compare the box’s listed volume and published fill information with the actual conductors and devices. ABB lists the Carlon B125AB as a 24.5-cubic-inch box and publishes wire-fill and size combinations for that model. This is an example of information to consult, not a determination that the box is suitable for a particular installation.

The research for this guide does not establish a box-fill calculation for a specific wiring configuration. Do not choose a box based on a generic conductor-count rule; ask a qualified electrician to assess the actual installation and applicable requirements.

Match the Box to the Wall and Device

Compare the box’s dimensions and depth with the wall finish, framing, and intended device. Manufacturer documentation describes products with different stud-mounting arrangements and adjustable brackets. Confirm that the selected box can be supported as instructed and will fit the finished wall and device.

Product names and broad categories are not enough to establish suitability. Review the exact model’s listing, dimensions, mounting instructions, and device requirements before purchase. If the wall construction or finish makes the fit uncertain, get professional advice before work begins.

Code and Safety

The National Electrical Code is commonly adopted through state or local law, but it is not automatically law nationwide. ESFI notes that local adoption may lag or include amendments. Check with the authority having jurisdiction for the rules that apply to your location.

ESFI’s outlet safety handout advises that outlet installation be performed by a qualified electrician. This is especially important when the wiring method, box capacity, mounting, code requirements, or site conditions are unclear. This guide is general selection information, not a project-specific wiring plan.

No. ESFI explains that the NEC is commonly mandated by state or local law, but local adoption can lag or include amendments. Ask the authority having jurisdiction which requirements apply to your project.

Who should install an outlet box?

ESFI advises that outlet installation be performed by a qualified electrician. Use one when the wiring, capacity, mounting, or applicable code requirements are uncertain.
