What you can do with an old pillow depends on four checks: is it clean, is the filling dry and intact, will it stay indoors, and do local organizations or collection services accept that exact item? A sound pillow can become pet bedding, packing padding, a kneeling pad or cushion. A damp, moldy or contaminated pillow should not be passed on or opened for reuse.
Before choosing a project, remove the washable cover and inspect the pillow and filling. Wash and dry suitable fabric covers according to their care label. Keep loose filling contained, and stop if you find visible mold, pests, strong contamination or persistent dampness.
1. Turn a clean pillow into a pet bed
Place a sound pillow inside a washable cover, crate liner or sturdy fabric case to make a simple bed for a dog or cat. You can also use the filling to pad a larger, washable outer cover. Suffolk Recycling says, “Stuffed textiles such as old pillows, quilts or duvets could be re-used as pet beds or to kneel on whilst gardening.”
Ask an animal shelter, rescue or other animal group before donating a finished bed. Hygiene policies differ, and some organizations accept only new bedding or specific washable materials.

2. Make a protected garden kneeling pad
A pillow provides soft cushioning while you weed, plant or work at ground level. Enclose it in a tough, removable cover so soil and moisture do not reach the filling. Bring it indoors after use and store it somewhere dry. Do not treat an unprotected pillow as weatherproof equipment.
3. Use it as packing padding
Keep a clean, dry pillow for a move, attic storage or shipping. Place it around furniture edges, appliances or other fragile items to fill gaps and reduce movement. This is reuse, not a recycling process: use a cover or bag if the pillow could pick up dust, and do not pack damp materials with valuables.
4. Refill another pillow, cushion or stuffed item
A flattened pillow may still contain usable filling. Open it carefully over a clean work surface and transfer only dry, clean material into another pillow, sofa cushion, chair cushion or stuffed toy that needs more volume.

- Separate clumps and check for foreign objects before transferring the filling.
- Do not reuse filling that is visibly damp, moldy, pest-damaged or contaminated.
- Close the receiving cover securely so loose material cannot escape.
5. Build a floor cushion
Combine one or more pillows inside a larger cover to create extra floor seating. A ready-made cover is optional: sturdy repurposed fabric can work if its seams and fastenings can withstand handling. Use a washable outer layer where children or pets will use the cushion.
6. Sew a draft stopper
Put clean pillow filling into a sturdy fabric tube, bolster cover or old trouser leg and close both ends securely. Lay it against the bottom of a door to reduce drafts. This is a practical reuse idea, not a tested insulation rating, so it should not be presented as a substitute for sealing gaps or improving building insulation.
7. Use it outdoors only with protection
Temporary outdoor cushion
A covered pillow can provide temporary seating on a porch or patio. Use a waterproof or water-repellent cover and bring the cushion indoors when rain or prolonged damp weather is expected. A cover limits exposure; it does not make an old pillow suitable for continuous rain.

Plant protection
Clean reused material can provide a temporary cover over plants during a cold night. Keep the material dry and arranged so it does not crush the plant or trap excessive moisture. Synthetic pillow filling belongs in a protected reuse or an accepted waste route, not in soil as an amendment.

If none of the projects fits, contact local animal groups, charities, reuse centers, textile collectors or your waste authority. Acceptance is highly specific: one program may take a pillowcase while excluding the pillow itself. For example, Kane County’s guidance accepts clean pillowcases but tells residents to remove and discard pillows. Check the current list for your municipality and confirm the exact material before traveling.
Donation and collection
Do not assume a charity or shelter can accept used bedding. Call first, describe the pillow’s condition and filling, and ask whether it must be washed, bagged or unopened.

Composting
Composting is not a universal option. ACT Government guidance allows certain natural-fiber pillows, including cotton, wool and feather/down, in backyard compost after synthetic covers, zips and tags are removed. The same guidance recommends general waste for unusable or synthetic pillows. Your local rules and the pillow’s actual components control the answer; never add synthetic fiber or an unidentified blend to compost.
Broader textile figures are not pillow figures
New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation estimates that 95% of used clothing, footwear and other household textiles—such as sheets, towels, curtains and pillowcases—can be reused or recycled. That estimate covers a broad textile group and does not establish a pillow-specific recycling rate.
Choose the safest route for each pillow

The best alternative to throwing away an old pillow is therefore the one that matches its condition and your local rules. Keep clean material in service, protect it from moisture, and verify donation, textile and compost routes before handing it over.
