This is a visual selection, not a scientific ranking: the eight examples below come from Katherine Butler’s Treehugger article, updated October 13, 2021. Their unusual appearances have different explanations, and a few popular stories about them remain interpretations rather than established facts.
Trees with strange roots or silhouettes
Sakisima-suonoki trees
In Japan’s subtropical regions, sakisima-suonoki trees are known for blade-shaped roots that rise from the soil and can make the tree appear to have a tail. Treehugger attributes the roots to conditions involving moisture and low light, but the visual description is firmer than that explanation; it should not be treated as a fully established account of the roots’ function. Joshua trees
Joshua trees are native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Their crooked, branching forms and stiff, pointed leaves stand out against the Mojave Desert, giving them a silhouette that can look almost otherworldly. Botanically, they are yucca-family succulents rather than true trees in the strict sense, though their woody stems and branching habit explain the familiar name. Treehugger describes their appearance; Conservation International identifies the Joshua tree as Yucca brevifolia and gives its range as the United States and Mexico.
Bald cypresses
Bald cypresses grow in southeastern U.S. wetlands, where roots can project above the water. These structures are often called pneumatophores. Treehugger says they are believed to help carry oxygen toward submerged roots and may also help anchor the tree; those functions should be understood as qualified explanations, not a single certain purpose. Walking palms
Some South American palms develop leg-like roots that give them an unsettling, almost animal appearance. The claim that a “walking palm” moves toward sunlight—or away from its place of germination—is a popular story, not an established movement fact in the sources cited here. “Walking” is best read as a nickname inspired by the roots. Trees that look as if they are bleeding
Bloodwood trees
Near the Namibia–Angola border in southern Africa, trees referred to as bloodwoods can release vivid red sap when their trunks are wounded. The color makes the “blood” comparison immediate, but “bloodwood” can refer to multiple trees. Treehugger does not establish a Latin species name for the tree it describes, so assigning one—or repeating its “type of teak” wording as precise taxonomy—would overstate what is known from that account. A tree that grows fruit from its trunk
Brazilian grape tree (jabuticaba)
The Brazilian grape tree, or jabuticaba, produces deep-purple fruit directly on its trunk and branches. The clustered fruit can make the bark look warty, an unusual sight but not evidence of anything sinister in the tree’s ecological role. Treehugger
Roots taking over a temple ruin
Angkor Wat’s strangler figs
At Ta Prohm, part of Cambodia’s Angkor temple complex, large figs and silk-cotton trees spread across the ruins, making roots and masonry seem fused together. That setting is visually dramatic, but it does not mean every Angkor structure is threatened by a fig. The general biology of strangler figs is better established: Kew explains that their aerial roots can constrict a host tree’s trunk and roots, cutting off water and nutrients and eventually killing the host. That mechanism describes their interaction with host trees; it should not be automatically applied to every tree growing among stone ruins. Treehugger; Kew

A dead tree that stayed standing
The Burmis Tree
The Burmis Tree is a limber pine landmark in Alberta, Canada. Treehugger reports that it died in the 1970s at an estimated 600–750 years old, remained bare but upright for roughly another 20 years, and toppled in 1998. The local community reportedly propped it back up with stainless steel. The age and timeline are figures reported by Treehugger, rather than independently confirmed here by a heritage authority. The effect comes from familiar forms made unexpected: roots above water, sharp branches against a desert sky, red sap, fruit on bark, or a living tree intertwined with ruins. Those appearances do not all signal the same biology. Some are visible structures with qualified functional explanations; others are simply striking forms, and the walking-palm story remains a popular interpretation rather than a verified account of movement.
