Orange peels are most useful in a garden when they are fully composted: they contribute organic material, but they are not instant fertilizer. You can also bury small amounts or try peels as a short-lived cat deterrent. Claims that they reliably repel insect pests or change soil acidity are not well supported.
Six ways to use orange peels in the garden
These options are not equally effective. Composting has the clearest support from extension sources; burying peels and using them around beds are limited, conditional uses rather than quick fixes.

- Add a modest amount to a compost pile or bin. Citrus peels can be included with other food scraps and organic matter. University of Georgia reporting quotes agricultural entomologist Gabrielle LaTora describing peels as a source of nitrogen and other nutrients. Balance them with other compost materials instead of adding a large load of fresh citrus at once. See UGA’s guidance on citrus peels and the University of Florida IFAS overview of home composting.
- Let the compost finish before using it. Orange peels take time to break down. Wait until the compost is mature and the peels are no longer recognizable before applying it to garden soil; fresh peels are not a quick plant food. The University of Maryland Extension response notes that peels can be composted but decompose slowly.
- Chop or tear peels before composting, if convenient. Smaller pieces may be easier to mix through a pile, but extension guidance does not establish chopping as a requirement. This is an optional handling step, not a guaranteed way to speed decomposition.
- Bury a small amount in soil if you are willing to wait. Peels can be buried, but they break down slowly and should not be expected to feed a nearby plant promptly. An Ask Extension answer from the University of Maryland Extension also suggests drying excess peels for later use when you have many.
- Try peels around a bed as a temporary cat deterrent. Oregon State University Extension says cats may dislike the scent of orange, lemon, or lime peels. Treat this as a monitored trial: the smell fades, and exposed decomposing peels may attract slugs, rodents, or raccoons. Remove them if they cause a nuisance. Read Oregon State’s advice on protecting gardens from cats.
- Use ground-level barriers when cats keep returning. Low netting or secured chicken wire is a more reliable long-term approach than scent alone, according to the same Oregon State Extension guidance. Keep barriers secured and positioned so they do not create a hazard for people or animals.
What orange peels will not reliably do
They are not a dependable insect repellent
Do not count on scattered peel to control ants, aphids, or other insect pests. LaTora told University of Georgia Today on July 3, 2025: “There’s not much scientific evidence that [citrus peels] repel insect pests.” The oils in extracts and distilled products are much more concentrated than those in discarded peel, and peel oils dissipate quickly.
They are not a soil-acidifying treatment
Adding a small amount of citrus to compost is unlikely to materially change its finished pH in the context described by the Ask Extension composting response. Do not use orange peels to target acid-loving plants or as a substitute for a soil test and a suitable amendment.
#1 Best Overall
- 80 Gallon Large Capacity: This outdoor compost bin can hold up to 80 gallons of food waste. The compost machine reduces the frequency of operation compared with smaller sizes for highly efficient composting and fermentation.
- Great Circulation System: In this outdoor composter, twelve air vents (total 48) are on each side, which allows the air to circulate, absorb oxygen, and create a highly efficient fermentation process.
- 6-12 Week Processing Time: Limit your waste and save budget by adding a composting bin to your backyard. Fill your container with organic waste or kitchen leftovers; then, in 1-3 months, you can enrich your soil by turning your household waste into fertile soil.
- Easy to Assemble: No tools needed, simply clip the pieces together and the compost tumbler will be ready to go. Snap-On Lid: Keep away pesky critters from your valuable food scraps and prevent the wind from knocking over the bin.
- Outdoor Composting Tumblers Information: Overall size: 23.75''L x 23.75''W x 32''H; Capacity: 80 Gallon
How to choose the right use
| Use | Evidence and expected result | Practical caution |
|---|---|---|
| Compost | Strongest extension support; peels contribute organic material and take time to break down. | Use a modest amount alongside other materials, then wait for finished compost. |
| Bury in soil | Possible, but decomposition is slow; no quick feeding effect is established. | Do not expect an immediate benefit to nearby plants. |
| Place around beds for cats | May temporarily discourage cats; scent fades. | Monitor for slugs and unwanted animals, and remove decomposing peel if needed. |
| Repel insect pests or change soil pH | Not established as a dependable effect. | Choose a pest-specific control or soil treatment instead. |
Uses to treat cautiously
Orange-peel sprays, seed-starting pots made from citrus halves, and peel-based slug traps are sometimes promoted as garden hacks, but the available extension sources cited here do not establish their horticultural results. If your goal is composting, use the peels as compost ingredients; if your goal is pest control, rely on guidance specific to the pest rather than assuming citrus scent will solve it.
