To build an ergonomic keyboard, choose a split design first, then buy only the PCB, switches, controllers, firmware-compatible parts and case specified for that design. A kit with a complete build guide is often the simplest starting point. A split layout lets you position the two halves separately, but “ergonomic” describes design intent and adjustability—not a proven treatment or prevention for pain.
Choose a build route before ordering parts
The board design determines the PCB footprint, controller, switch family, firmware and connection between halves. Read its bill of materials and build guide before buying components; parts used by one split keyboard are not automatically compatible with another.

Start with a documented kit
A kit is a practical choice if you want parts and instructions intended to work together. The Aurora series guide, for example, distinguishes its PCB, switch sockets and controller options, and notes that MX and Choc socket variants differ. Check the exact board and switch footprint before adding components. Its guide estimates four to eight hours for that kit build; that is not a general estimate for building any keyboard. Read the Aurora build guide and check its component guide.

An open-source project can provide design files, a bill of materials, assembly instructions and firmware. Ergonaut One describes a wireless split design using a Seeed Studio XIAO nRF52840, hot-swap switches and printable case parts. Follow the project’s instructions for the specific revision: its controller and case parts are not universal keyboard components. See the Ergonaut One project.

Design a board from scratch
A from-scratch build adds matrix and PCB design, controller selection, case design and firmware configuration. Adafruit’s split-ortho example illustrates one architecture: a diode matrix, two TCA8418 keypad expanders and a QT Py RP2040. Treat it as a reference design, not a universal shopping list. See Adafruit’s Split Ortho build.
Check fit and features before committing
There is no single layout established here as universally ergonomic. Compare the design with your hand size, reach and workspace, and plan to adjust to a new layout gradually.

- Layout and reach: Compare column-staggered or ortholinear keys, total key count, thumb-cluster position and reach to keys you use often.
- Positioning: Check how far apart the halves can sit, whether they can rotate, and whether the case or a stand supports tenting or tilt.
- Switches and keycaps: Verify the PCB footprint—such as MX or low-profile Choc—and consider switch height and keycap profile as reach and comfort variables.
- Build difficulty: Check whether assembly involves through-hole soldering, surface-mount parts, controller sockets or extra case hardware, and whether the guide covers each step.
- Connectivity and power: Confirm whether the halves communicate over a cable or wirelessly, what connects the keyboard to the host, and whether batteries are required.
- Firmware and repair: Confirm support for the exact design, how its keymap is configured, and whether replacement PCBs, controllers, sockets or case files are available.
Make a compatible parts list
A typical build may need the following. The exact requirements depend on the chosen design, so its revision-specific bill of materials takes precedence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- PCB or kit: Confirm the layout, left and right halves, switch footprint, controller footprint and expected inter-half connection.
- Switches and keycaps: Match the switch family and key spacing to the PCB and layout. Do not assume a keycap set or switch fits because it worked with another board.
- Microcontroller or controllers: Use the controller supported by the design and firmware. Aurora kits call for Pro Micro-compatible controllers and describe wired RP2040 options and a recommended wireless option; Ergonaut One specifies a different controller. Check Aurora’s controller guidance and Ergonaut One’s specification.
- Hot-swap sockets: These let you change switches without desoldering, but are optional unless the design calls for them. Match the socket to both the PCB and switch type.
- Controller sockets or headers: These can make a controller removable and reusable, but add components and solder joints. Follow the board’s instructions.
- Case and hardware: Use the design’s specified files, fasteners and spacers. A printable case made for one PCB should not be assumed to fit another.
- Tools and supplies: Depending on the assembly method, you may need a suitable soldering iron and solder, tweezers or pliers, flush cutters and eye protection.
Assemble the board in the design’s sequence
Use the chosen keyboard’s own manual for component order, orientation and power requirements. The Aurora steps below illustrate why checking the guide before soldering matters; they are not a substitute for instructions for a different board.

- Wrist Rest: Soft cushioned wrist rest helps you to rest your wrist and forearm while typing and makes work easier and more comfortable.
- Easy Setup: Simply insert the nano USB receiver (stored at the back of the keyboard) into your computer and use the keyboard instantly.
- 6-Month Battery Life: Rechargeable lithium battery with an industry-high capacity lasts for 6 months with single charge (based on 2 hours non-stop use per day).
- Package contents: Arteck Split Ergonomic Keyboard, nano USB receiver (stored at the back of the keyboard), USB-C charging cable, welcome guide, our 24-month warranty and friendly customer service.
- Read the complete guide and check the revision. Compare the PCB and parts with the bill of materials, and inspect the board before assembly. The Aurora guide recommends reading through the instructions first.
- Test and flash controllers before installing them. Follow the project’s test instructions while the controller is still easy to replace. The Aurora microcontroller instructions describe controller testing and installation.
- Install components in the specified order. For Aurora controller sockets, the guide recommends taping them in place, soldering one pin, checking alignment, then completing the remaining joints. Do not hold parts in place with your fingers while soldering; components can become hot.
- Check orientation and battery clearance. Follow the specified controller orientation. Aurora’s wireless instructions advise fitting the battery before completing the controller-socket steps.
- Trim leads carefully and inspect the joints. Wear eye protection when clipping header leads because cut metal can fly. Inspect solder joints before connecting power.
- Close the case, connect the halves and flash firmware. Use only the connection method specified for the design, then flash the correct firmware to the relevant controller or controllers. Crosses V2 documentation is one example of a kit guide that sequences soldering, final assembly, firmware flashing and connection.
Choose firmware alongside the hardware
Split firmware depends on how the halves communicate and which controllers the design supports. Confirm these details before buying or assembling the board rather than mixing instructions from unrelated projects.
Wired splits with QMK
QMK documents a common wired arrangement in which one controller connects to USB and communicates with the second controller over serial or I2C through a TRRS or similar cable. Split support requires additional configuration; follow the instructions for the exact keyboard. Read QMK’s split keyboard documentation.

Split builds with ZMK
ZMK requires separate firmware files for the two halves, with each file flashed to its respective controller. Its experimental runtime transport switching requires specially designed hardware; it is not a safe retrofit for a board that was not designed for it. Read ZMK’s split keyboard documentation.
What an ergonomic build can—and cannot—establish
A split design lets you position its halves independently, and a board with suitable case or stand options may also allow tenting or tilt. Those adjustments and the layout can help you tailor the keyboard to your reach and workspace. The assembly and project sources cited here do not establish clinical health outcomes, so a DIY keyboard should not be described as preventing or treating repetitive strain injury.
