The best fit depends on how much visual coverage you want, how quickly you need it, how much upkeep you can manage, and whether the fence can safely carry the added wind load.
Before choosing a covering, check the fence
Any material attached to a fence changes how wind acts on it; dense coverings can increase wind load. Before installation, inspect posts, rails, and connections for looseness, leaning, or damage. If the fence is old, unstable, or lightly built, have its condition assessed before adding a substantial covering. 1. Thread privacy slats through the mesh
Purpose-built chain-link slats slide vertically through the fence openings. They give a finished, fence-integrated appearance, but installation means threading many individual pieces through the mesh. Match slat height and product compatibility to your fence before ordering.

2. Attach a privacy screen
A screen covers the mesh in larger sections rather than filling openings one by one. The installation guide recommends measuring the fence, laying out the screen, and securing it with cable ties. It lists gloves, wire cutters, and a tape measure as tools. Follow the screen maker’s instructions for attachment and spacing, and take the added wind exposure into account before fitting it (How to Attach Privacy Screen to Chain Link Fence; NMI Fence).

3. Fasten bamboo or reed rolls
Bamboo or reed screening brings a natural-material look and can be tied to the existing fence. Keep the roll clear of the ground, confirm the fence can bear its added load, and fasten it securely at intervals, as Sunset Bamboo advises (Bamboo Fencing Installation Instructions). Exposure, material, and installation vary, so there is no dependable universal service-life figure.

Separate faux-greenery panels create a leafy appearance without planting. They are different from slats made to weave through chain-link: confirm each panel’s dimensions and attachment method will work with your fence. The available listing identifies artificial hedge panels as an option, but does not provide independently tested privacy or durability data (How to Add Privacy to a Chain Link Fence: 10 Easy Ideas).

5. Grow climbing vines on the fence
Vines can turn the fence into a living screen, but coverage takes time and requires care. Choose plants for your local climate and consider whether their growth habits, maintenance needs, and effect on the fence suit your site. 6. Plant a hedge alongside the fence
A hedge can create a substantial natural screen once established, but it needs room and ongoing care and will not provide immediate privacy. Timing depends on plant choice and growing conditions; published estimates are not universal guarantees.
