5 Types of Shovels for Gardening—and How to Choose the Right One

Choose a garden shovel by the job: round-point for everyday digging, square-point for loose material, spades for slicing or narrow trenches.

The best shovel for gardening depends on the job: use a pointed blade to break into soil, a square edge to move loose material, a flat spade to slice or edge, and a narrow trenching spade for tight channels. These five useful categories overlap, and retailers do not use one universal naming system. For most everyday digging, a round-point garden shovel is a practical starting point.

1. Round-point garden shovel: everyday digging

A round-point shovel is a dependable choice for planting holes, turning soil, and lifting soil. Its pointed blade enters the ground more readily than a flat-edged scoop. Iowa State Extension distinguishes digging tools from tools for moving loose material, while NC State describes the round-point shovel as useful for general digging and turning.

If you want one shovel for ordinary garden digging, start here. It is not necessarily the best tool for every task: moving a large pile of compost or cutting a clean edge may call for a different blade.

2. Pointed digging shovel: breaking into resistant ground

A pointed tip concentrates force at the blade’s end, which can help the shovel enter hard soil or cut through roots. This description overlaps with the round-point category: “pointed digging shovel” is best understood as a blade shape and use, not a separate standardized type found under the same name at every retailer.

For compacted ground, a pointed shovel can help with initial penetration. If the job is mostly lifting loose material, its shape is less efficient than a broad, flatter blade.

3. Square-point shovel: scooping and moving loose material

The flat front edge of a square-point shovel works well for scooping and moving loose material such as mulch or compost, particularly across a relatively flat surface. It can also help tidy a pile or load material into a cart.

That flat edge is less suited to driving into undisturbed soil than a pointed blade. For large volumes of lightweight material, a wider scoop or coal shovel is another option; treat it as a scoop-style variant rather than a different digging tool.

4. Garden spade: slicing, edging, and transplanting

A garden spade has a relatively flat, sharp blade suited to slicing through turf, edging beds, making straight-sided trench edges, and dividing crowded rootstocks. A narrower, short-handled spade can also provide control when transplanting larger plants.

Use a spade when you want a clean cut or defined edge rather than a broad scoop. Its blade is designed for slicing and shaping, so it is not a substitute for a shovel intended to carry a large load of loose soil.

5. Trenching or drain spade: narrow channels and holes

A trenching spade has a long, narrow blade for narrow trenches used in irrigation or drainage, as well as narrow planting holes. The same general tool family may be sold as a tile spade, ditch shovel, or sharpshooter. Check the blade shape and intended use rather than relying on the store label alone.

How to choose a shovel that fits your work

Match the blade to the action

  • Digging or turning soil: choose a pointed round-point blade.
  • Moving loose mulch or compost: choose a square-point or scoop-style blade.
  • Slicing sod, edging, or dividing roots: choose a sharp garden spade.
  • Making a narrow trench or planting hole: choose a trenching or drain spade.

Consider width and carrying capacity

Virginia Cooperative Extension describes a general-purpose garden shovel as about 8 to 9 inches wide and suggests that a 6-inch-wide shovel may suit someone who is not physically strong. These are approximate recommendations from that source, not universal sizing rules. A wider blade carries more material, but repeated full loads demand more strength.

Choose handle length and grip for reach and control

Virginia Cooperative Extension describes long handles of around 40 to 48 inches as useful for deeper holes and reach, and short handles of around 26 to 30 inches as useful for control, trench work, or limited space. A long straight handle and a short D-grip feel and work differently; choose according to your reach, the space available, and the task.

Balance weight and material

Pick a tool you can manage repeatedly, not just lift once in a shop. Virginia Cooperative Extension characterizes wood handles as less expensive and durable when stored indoors, fiberglass as weather-resistant and lighter and stronger in its description, and tubular steel as heavier and more expensive, with more construction-related uses. These are source-level generalizations, not guarantees about every shovel or material.

Think about the blade-to-handle angle

The angle, or cant, between blade and handle affects how a shovel works. Virginia Cooperative Extension says a lower angle is better suited to digging holes, while a higher cant gives leverage for prying heavy soil but is less suited to straight-down digging. The right geometry depends on whether you need to penetrate, pry, or scoop.

Use a shovel with less strain

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach explains that “digging, shoveling, and spading are actually 3 different actions”: digging loosens or removes soil, shoveling moves loose material, and spading mixes material in place.

  1. Keep the blade vertical as it enters the soil.
  2. Step on the shovel to add your body weight when breaking ground.
  3. Take manageable slices instead of trying to lift a fully loaded blade.
  4. When lifting, bend your knees, keep your back straight, and lift with your legs.

For ordinary garden digging, begin with a round-point shovel. Add a square-point shovel, spade, or trenching spade when the work regularly calls for scooping, slicing, or narrow channels.
