5 Types of Plant Pruning Cuts—and How They Differ

The phrase “five types of pruning cuts” commonly refers to five techniques, not a universal cut taxonomy. Learn how each works and how to choose a cut and tool.

“Five types of pruning cuts” usually means five pruning techniques: pinching, heading back, thinning, renewal pruning, and shearing. It is not a universal list of five cut geometries. When deciding where to cut a branch, a more useful distinction is whether you shorten it, remove it at its origin, or reduce it to a suitable side branch. Those terms vary somewhat among extension publications, so the guide below defines how it uses them.

The five commonly taught pruning techniques

North Carolina State Extension groups five basic techniques for woody ornamental trees and shrubs. Some describe the way you shape or manage a plant over time; they do not all name a different place to make a cut.

1. Pinching

Remove the soft growing tip of a shoot, often with your fingers. Taking off the terminal growing point can encourage lateral buds to grow, changing the shoot’s branching and shape.

2. Heading back

Shorten a shoot or branch rather than removing it at its origin. Make the cut back to a bud or lateral. Growth below the cut may become denser, so use heading back deliberately when you want branching or a shorter shoot.

  • INCLUDES: (1) Fiskars Bypass Pruning Shears designed for everyday gardening and plant care and backed by a Lifetime Warranty. Product care tips: Wipe pruners clean after each use to prevent sap build-up and lightly oil blade for longer product life

3. Thinning

Remove selected stems or branches at their origin, or reduce a branch to an appropriate lateral. Thinning can reduce crowding while preserving a more natural framework. Extension sources do not use “thinning,” “removal,” and “reduction” identically; the physical cut distinctions below clarify the terms used here.

4. Renewal pruning

Remove selected older stems to encourage replacement growth. Whether this is appropriate, and how often to do it, depends on the plant species and its growth or flowering habit. It is not a universal annual task.

  • POWERFUL 4X LEVER CUTTING: The optimized lever-action design multiplies cutting force up to 4X, making thicker branches easier to prune with less hand effort. Cuts branches up to 3/4" with smooth, controlled power for everyday garden pruning
  • ARTHRITIS & SENIORS FRIENDLY: Ergonomic non-slip rubber handles cushion pressure and provide a secure, comfortable grip, helping reduce hand and wrist fatigue. A comfortable hand pruner for seniors, arthritis and longer pruning sessions
  • ONE-HAND SAFETY LOCK: The easy-access safety lock opens and closes with one hand for faster trimming, then securely holds the blades closed for safer carrying and storage

5. Shearing

Clip many shoot tips to create or maintain a formal outline, such as a hedge. Shearing is a shaping technique, not a distinct cut location. Repeated shearing is different from selectively pruning individual branches.

Three physical cuts: where the branch ends

When choosing a cut for a particular branch, focus on where the cut ends, what remains, and the growth response you want. Purdue describes removal (thinning) and reduction (heading back); Colorado State presents removal, reduction, and heading as three categories. Because the labels vary, the definitions here focus on what the cut does.

Cut Where it ends What remains and intended result
Heading Partway along a stem or branch, rather than at its origin The shortened stem remains; shoots below the cut may grow, increasing branching.
Removal (thinning) At the branch’s point of origin, such as its attachment to a main branch or trunk The selected branch is removed, opening space while leaving the remaining framework.
Reduction At a suitably sized lateral branch that can continue growing The branch is shortened to that lateral, which becomes the continuation of growth. Some sources classify reduction as a type of thinning rather than a separate category.

Protect the branch collar on a removal cut

When removing a branch from a trunk, preserve the branch collar—the raised area around the branch attachment. Do not cut flush to the trunk: that removes tissue involved in the tree’s response to the wound.

Choose a cut by the result you want

  • Remove a branch: make a removal cut at its origin while preserving the branch collar if it attaches to a trunk.
  • Shorten a branch while retaining its direction of growth: reduce it to a suitably sized lateral.
  • Encourage branching below a cut: use a heading cut or pinching, depending on whether the shoot is soft and small or woody.
  • Reduce crowding while keeping a natural framework: selectively thin stems or branches rather than shearing the whole outline.

The right technique and timing depend on the plant, climate, flowering habit, and pruning goal. A general list cannot establish one schedule or method for every species.

Match the tool to the branch

University extension guidance recommends choosing a tool for the size of the material and the cut needed. Use bypass hand pruners for small living stems, loppers for thicker branches that need more leverage, and a pruning saw for larger woody branches. Hedge shears are suited to shearing. No single tool is appropriate for every branch size; use one that can make a clean cut on the material rather than forcing an undersized tool.

Clean tools when disease may be a concern

Disinfect pruning tools between plants, particularly when moving between healthy and diseased plants. New Hampshire Extension advises wiping or dipping tools with isopropyl alcohol or a 10% bleach solution between cuts; Purdue also advises disinfecting between plants. The right sanitation approach can depend on the disease and setting, so check relevant local or species-specific guidance rather than assuming one protocol fits every situation.
