Eucalyptus can grow indoors only where conditions resemble a bright, spacious conservatory: strong direct sun, free-draining soil, and room for a woody plant that may grow rapidly or become a large tree. A typical room with modest or indirect light is not a reliable setting. Of the five species below, only Eucalyptus cinerea is explicitly described as suitable for conservatory culture by the cited sources; the others are possibilities to assess for large containers or conservatories, not proven houseplants.
Can you grow eucalyptus indoors?
Sometimes, in a very bright conservatory, sunroom, or similarly sunny space. Eucalyptus are sun-loving trees or large shrubs, not naturally compact indoor foliage plants. The Royal Horticultural Society says they enjoy sun and dislike shade; North Carolina State University Extension defines full sun as at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. That is a demanding threshold for many homes.

The consulted horticultural sources describe outdoor plants and one conservatory option, not controlled indoor-growing trials. They do not establish how long eucalyptus survive indoors or verify five dependable houseplants. Treat indoor cultivation as a conditional experiment, and choose a different plant if you cannot provide direct sun and adequate space.
Which eucalyptus tree is best for indoors?
Eucalyptus cinerea, commonly called silver dollar tree or argyle apple, is the most defensible indoor-adjacent choice because NC State Extension specifically says it can be grown as a conservatory plant. That does not mean it is suited to an ordinary room: it needs full sun and well-drained soil, and NC State reports it can grow 6–8 feet in one season. That figure describes the species’ growth, not indoor growth.

The other four species are included for readers considering a very bright conservatory or large-container culture. The RHS size figures below are outdoor potential, not indoor predictions.
| Species | Foliage and appeal | Reported size | Indoor evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eucalyptus cinerea (silver dollar tree, argyle apple) | Round, fragrant silver foliage | NC State reports 6–8 feet of growth in one season; it does not specify indoor growth. | NC State explicitly identifies it as a conservatory plant; full sun and well-drained soil are required. |
| Eucalyptus gunnii (cider gum) | Not described in the cited RHS genus guide. | RHS lists potential height above 12 metres and width above 8 metres. | No indoor endorsement in the cited source; consider only temporary or conservatory/container culture, not a permanent ordinary-room plant. |
| Eucalyptus parvula (Kybean gum) | Not described in the cited RHS genus guide. | RHS lists potential height above 12 metres and width above 8 metres. | No indoor suitability stated by RHS. |
| Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. niphophila (snow gum) | Not described in the cited RHS genus guide. | RHS lists height and width of 4–8 metres. | No indoor endorsement in the cited source; even this comparatively smaller entry is still a substantial tree. |
| Eucalyptus perriniana (spinning gum, round-leafed gum) | Rounded bluish-green juvenile leaves. | RHS lists a maximum height of 8–12 metres. | RHS specifies a full-sun position, but the cited profile does not endorse indoor cultivation. |
These mature dimensions should guide your space decision, not be read as a promise that a pot will keep a tree small. The RHS says most eucalyptus can grow happily in a large container until they outgrow it.

How much light does an indoor eucalyptus need?
Plan for at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, the NC State Extension definition of full sun. A bright-looking room is not necessarily sunny enough: indirect daylight does not meet that definition. The RHS describes eucalyptus as sun-loving and says, “These trees dislike shade, waterlogged soil and exposed, cold, frost-prone sites.”

Supplemental lighting is not evidence that eucalyptus will thrive indoors, and no specific grow light has been evaluated here. If you cannot offer strong light, choose another plant rather than assuming a lamp will make eucalyptus an easy houseplant.

What care does eucalyptus need in a container?
Use free-draining soil and avoid waterlogging
Both the RHS guidance and NC State’s silver dollar tree profile call for well-drained soil or warn against waterlogged conditions. NC State describes established plants as drought tolerant, but that is not a tailored watering schedule for a potted plant. The consulted pages do not establish how often to water eucalyptus indoors; avoid keeping the soil waterlogged, and do not interpret drought tolerance as a reason to leave a container completely dry.
Expect a woody plant to outgrow its pot
A large container can accommodate eucalyptus for a time, but it does not make a large species permanently compact. Check the chosen species’ eventual dimensions against the room, ceiling height, and available floor space before planting.

Prune with species-specific guidance
The RHS profile for E. perriniana mentions pruning group 1 or group 7 to retain juvenile foliage. This is guidance for that species and purpose, not a universal indoor pruning prescription for all eucalyptus.

Are eucalyptus safe around pets and when handled?
No. ASPCA lists eucalyptus as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Possible signs include salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and weakness. Keep the plant, fallen leaves, and pruning clippings inaccessible to pets; if an animal may have eaten any part, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service.
