Spring is also a useful time to catch up if you missed fall cleanup. These steps focus on hand tools; maintain powered equipment according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
1. Clean off dirt, sap, and residue
Brush away soil and plant matter first. Wash tools with water and mild soap if needed, then dry them thoroughly before moving on. Dirt and debris can interfere with inspection and disinfection, while putting tools away damp encourages rust.

Sap can gum up pruning blades and mechanisms. Use a sap-removal method suitable for the tool, following its care instructions. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources includes sap removal in its spring gardening tips.

Once tools are clean and dry, check blades, joints, screws, and handles. Rust on metal can often be removed with a wire brush or steel wool. Tighten loose parts where appropriate, and look for cracked or splintered wooden handles. Repair or replace damaged components before using the tool.

- Extends Tool Life & Improves Cutting Performance – Regular sharpening with this tool helps maintain clean, smooth cutting edges that reduce hand fatigue, enhance tool efficiency, and promote healthier, cleaner cuts when working with plants and branches.
Rust, looseness, dullness, and handle damage are different problems; removing rust will not fix a loose joint or a cracked handle. The University of Vermont Extension’s storage guidance also recommends inspecting tools and considering replacement parts.
3. Sharpen edges that need it
Not every tool needs sharpening at the start of the season. For a dull or folded edge on a shovel, hoe, or similar digging tool, UC Master Gardeners recommend a flat file or coarse sharpening stone. Follow the existing edge angle rather than creating a new one. A garden tool sharpening file can suit many digging-tool edges, but a generic file is not appropriate for every blade.

Serrated pruning saws have a different tooth design; UC Master Gardeners recommend taking them to a professional rather than sharpening them like a flat-edged tool. Work with the tool secured and use appropriate protective equipment. For additional tool-specific guidance, see the University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension’s tool-maintenance advice.

4. Disinfect pruning tools when disease could spread
Disinfection matters most when pruning diseased plants or when there is another reason to avoid carrying plant pathogens between cuts. First remove visible dirt and plant debris: residue can interfere with disinfection. Sanitize before pruning and between plants, especially after working on a diseased plant. The University of Minnesota Extension explains when and why to clean and disinfect gardening tools.

Use one method according to its directions; disinfectants and contact times are not interchangeable. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension specifies at least 30 seconds of contact for 70% alcohol or 10% bleach, and notes that alcohol is less corrosive. Illinois Extension also warns that bleach can corrode metal in its guidance on readying garden tools. Follow the disinfectant’s product directions, and do not combine recipes.

After cleaning and drying, apply a light coat of oil to metal surfaces and moving parts; wipe away excess where appropriate. Use wood-care oil if a wooden handle needs it, and smooth rough spots before they become splinters. UF/IFAS Extension discusses care for metal, moving parts, and handles in its December 2, 2025, garden-tool care guidance.

The University of Vermont Extension advises following the manufacturer’s manual for powered equipment.
