The best Christmas tree topper completes the silhouette, reinforces your decorating theme, and remains stable without bending the leader branch. Choose from these 36 ideas by look, weight, lighting, budget, and whether you want a ready-made focal point or a DIY project.
Choose the right topper before you decorate
Start with the tree’s top branch and the room’s sightline. A topper should be visible from across the room without forcing the leader branch downward. Lightweight bows, ribbon sprays, paper, felt, and small natural picks suit narrow or delicate trees. Resin figures, large metal pieces, and substantial crowns need a sturdy top and a secure attachment.
| Decision | Good choices | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional or celestial | Stars, angels, doves, Bethlehem-style rays | Metal or resin versions can be top-heavy |
| Modern, glam, or retro | Disco ball, mirrored sunburst, geometric finial, crown | Reflective surfaces can compete with tree lights |
| Rustic or woodland | Pinecones, twigs, rattan, dried botanicals, carved wood | Natural materials vary in weight and may shed |
| Family or novelty | Gnome, Santa, snowman, character, initial | Avoid sharp edges and loose small parts around children |
| Illuminated focal point | Lighted starburst or finial | Keep wiring clear of heat sources and secure the battery pack or cord |
Clip-on bases, floral picks, florist’s wire, and tie-on loops are generally easier to stabilize than a loose ornament. For a bow, wire the finished piece directly to the central top branch.

6. Traditional angel with halo
An angel remains a strong choice for a classic or religious tree. Select one with a broad, balanced base rather than a narrow stand that can twist.

31. Disco-ball topper
A small mirrored sphere turns tree lights into moving reflections and suits a glam or retro room. Use a concealed wire or pick instead of relying on the hanging loop alone.
32. Geometric metal finial
An angular brass, black, or silver finial adds a clean architectural line. Its narrow profile works well on contemporary trees, provided the metal base is firmly anchored.
33. Mirrored sunburst
Radiating mirrored pieces create a dramatic crown with relatively little depth. Place it where reflections enhance rather than glare into nearby seating.

An initial, crest, or handmade star gives the tree a story no store-bought ornament can replicate. Lightweight card, felt, or thin wood keeps the personal piece practical as well as meaningful.
How to make a bow tree topper
- Choose wide wired ribbon. Wired edges hold large loops and let you reshape the bow after it is installed.
- Make the main loops. Form two or more generous loops, pinching the center firmly after each one.
- Add coordinating layers. Place a narrower or contrasting ribbon over the first layer for depth; two or three ribbons are usually enough.
- Cut long tails. Angle or notch the ends, leaving enough length to flow into the upper branches without hiding the ornaments.
- Wire the center. Wrap florist’s wire tightly around the pinched center and leave two long ends for attachment.
- Attach it to the central top branch. Twist the wire around the leader branch, then tuck the ends into the tree so nothing sharp is exposed.
- Shape the loops and tails. Fan the loops, stagger the tails, and let some ribbon descend into the upper branches for continuity.
Safe installation and final checks
Place the tree where people will not brush against it and where it does not block a doorway. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises monitoring water levels in live trees daily because heated rooms dry them quickly; artificial trees should carry a “Fire Resistant” label. Keep the tree and topper away from candles and other heat sources, as Premier assembly guidance also warns.

- Test the topper’s weight on the top branch before finishing the ornaments.
- Use wire, a clip, floral pick, or tie-on loop; do not rely on gravity alone.
- For a tall or heavy piece, use two attachment points to stop twisting.
- Check that cords, battery packs, wires, and sharp ends are tucked away.
- In homes with young children, avoid breakable materials, pointed rays, and small removable parts.
- Brush the upper branches gently after installation to confirm the topper cannot fall.
