A fireplace can bring a room together even when no fire is burning. The right design can emphasize original architecture, add a distinct material or color, create a focal point, or let the firebox recede. These 35 ideas are inspiration—not a ranking of the most popular styles—and what works depends on the room and the type of fireplace you have.
Before planning work at the opening, identify whether your fireplace is traditional masonry or a factory-built unit. That distinction can affect which inserts, finishes, and changes are appropriate.
Ideas that make the fireplace feel part of the architecture
1. Echo a room’s existing stone
Repeat a stone already used on a foundation wall, entry, or nearby feature. The connection helps a new surround feel integrated rather than added as an unrelated accent.
2. Continue the brick across the wall
Extend exposed brick beyond the firebox to make a broad architectural plane. This can give a large room a stronger anchor than a narrow surround.

3. Keep a traditional masonry opening visible
If the original brickwork has character, consider cleaning and preserving it instead of covering it. A simple mantel can provide a finished edge without competing with the masonry.
4. Frame the opening with a restrained surround
Use a modest surround that clarifies the firebox’s outline while leaving the surrounding wall quiet. This works when the fireplace is meant to support the room, not dominate it.
5. Carry a simple finish from floor to ceiling
A continuous surface above and below the mantel makes the fireplace read as one tall architectural element. The uninterrupted vertical line can also draw the eye upward.
6. Use a shallow built-out chimney breast
A projection around the fireplace gives it depth and a defined place in the room. Keep its scale in proportion to the wall so it does not crowd a compact space.
7. Give an asymmetrical fireplace a deliberate composition
Balance an off-center opening with shelving, artwork, or cabinetry on the open side. The goal is visual equilibrium, not necessarily matching elements on both sides.
8. Align the mantel with nearby details
Relate mantel height or width to a window head, built-in, or other strong line in the room. Repeated alignments make a renovation feel considered.
Ideas for changing the room’s scale and focal point
9. Make a tall surround a vertical focal point
Run the fireplace treatment higher than the mantel to emphasize ceiling height. A restrained material helps the height feel architectural rather than busy.
10. Use a wide surround to anchor a long wall
A horizontally extended treatment can hold its own in a broad living room. Keep the opening and surrounding elements visually balanced so the firebox does not appear lost within it.

A substantial mantel creates a horizontal break between the firebox and the wall above. It can anchor art or a mirror, but should not be treated as a shelf for combustible items unless clearances allow.
12. Let a corner fireplace define a seating zone
Arrange chairs or a sofa to acknowledge the corner instead of ignoring it. A rug and low table can help connect the angled focal point to the rest of the room.

A shared fireplace can visually link two rooms while allowing each side its own seating arrangement. Compatibility and installation requirements depend on the specific appliance and structure.
14. Set a fireplace into built-ins
Frame the firebox with bookcases or closed storage to make a full-wall composition. Keep furnishings and stored items outside the fireplace’s required clearances.

15. Create a fireplace wall with a quiet perimeter
Concentrate texture or color around the fireplace, then leave adjacent walls simpler. This gives the focal point definition without making every surface compete.
Ideas built around texture and finish
16. Choose rough-cut stone for a tactile focal point
Irregular stone brings variation and a natural, substantial feel. It can be especially effective when the rest of the room has smoother surfaces.
17. Use smooth stone for a calmer look
Large, relatively uniform stone pieces make the fireplace feel more streamlined than a highly varied field. The quieter surface lets the opening or mantel take precedence.
18. Introduce patterned tile around the opening
Tile can add a concentrated pattern where it will be noticed without covering the whole room. Confirm the selected material and installation are suitable for the location and appliance.

Tile with visible variation in color or surface gives the surround depth without requiring a large-scale pattern. A limited palette keeps the effect composed.
20. Use brick for an enduring, familiar texture
Brick can feel rustic, traditional, or modern depending on its layout, color, and surrounding details. Decide whether you want the masonry to read as the main feature or as a quiet background.
21. Consider plaster for a monolithic appearance
A smooth, continuous surround can make the fireplace feel integrated with the wall. Product suitability and clearances matter near a working firebox; do not assume an ordinary wall finish is appropriate there.
22. Contrast a textured surround with a simple mantel
When the surround has strong visual movement, a plain mantel can give the eye a resting point. This pairing keeps texture from overwhelming the composition.

- ELEGANT FINISH: Iron scroll with an heat-resistant finish and textured add a rustic touch of class to your fireplace
- PROTECTIVE MESH: Tightly woven wrought iron mesh provides an easy-cleaning surface and a see-through barrier to trap sparks and embers
- QUALITY CONSTRUCTION: Wrought iron bars connected by iron mesh and welded hinges create a solid construction that won't break down
- LOW-HEAT HANDLES: A set of handles on the outer edges are built to protect your hands and allow you to quickly move the screen and tend your fire

23. Pair a smooth surround with a distinctive mantel
A simple field of stone, tile, or another suitable finish can make a shaped or richly grained mantel stand out. Keep the mantel’s material and placement appropriate to the fireplace and its clearances.
24. Use a dark firebox surround for definition
A darker frame can make the opening appear crisp against a lighter wall. Test the visual effect with the room’s lighting, since a dark surface may feel heavier in a small space.
25. Keep the finish close to the wall color
A low-contrast surround lets the fireplace remain part of the room’s architecture without insisting on attention. This is useful when artwork, windows, or views are the intended focal points.
Ideas for color, display, and everyday use
26. Paint the surrounding wall a contrasting color
A contrasting wall can frame the fireplace without changing the material at the opening. Choose a color relationship that works with the room’s fixed finishes and furnishings.
27. Use a tonal palette
Combine related shades across the surround, mantel, and wall for a composed, layered effect. Varying texture helps keep a tonal scheme from feeling flat.
28. Make the mantel a place for one considered display
Give a single artwork, mirror, or sculptural object room to stand out. Check both attachment requirements and the appliance’s clearance guidance before placing anything above a working fireplace.
29. Build in closed storage nearby
Cabinet doors can keep media, games, or other living-room items out of sight while preserving a clean fireplace wall. Plan the cabinetry around the firebox, required clearances, and any access needed for inspection or maintenance.
30. Add open shelves for a lighter composition
Open shelving can balance a fireplace wall without the visual mass of full-height cabinets. Keep books and decorative items clear of areas where heat or required clearances make placement unsuitable.
31. Create a low hearth that doubles as seating only when appropriate
A broad hearth can visually ground the fireplace and offer a place to sit. Its dimensions, surface, and construction must meet applicable requirements for the fireplace type and local code.
32. Keep a hearth visually minimal
A simple, uncluttered hearth allows the firebox and surround to do the work. Avoid treating decorative objects as harmless by default; their placement should respect the appliance’s instructions and clearances.

33. Make a nonworking fireplace a display niche
If the firebox is permanently out of service, it can become a place for art or a restrained arrangement of objects. Make its nonworking status clear to everyone in the home, and do not assume it is safe to burn without inspection and appropriate restoration.
34. Design the fireplace wall around seating, not the screen
Arrange seating for conversation and use the fireplace as the room’s anchor. If a television is also part of the composition, account for viewing comfort and the manufacturer’s heat limits rather than placing it wherever the wall permits.

35. Keep the fireplace visually quiet for year-round appeal
Use a simple surround, restrained mantel styling, and a finish that suits the room in every season. The result keeps the room’s focal point without relying on a flame for visual interest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the fireplace before planning a conversion or close-in remodel
First establish whether the fireplace is masonry or factory-built. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency distinguishes traditional masonry fireplaces from low-mass factory-built units. For a factory-built fireplace, an insert must be designed and tested for that specific unit; check its identification and manufacturer’s instructions before proposing a conversion. See the EPA guide to choosing wood-burning appliances.
Also decide whether the fireplace is meant mainly to provide ambience or to heat the room. EPA says most traditional open fireplaces primarily provide ambience and secondary heat; it reports that they lose more than 90 percent of the fire’s heat up the chimney, taking much of the room’s heated air with it. That statement is EPA guidance on traditional open fireplaces, not a performance rating for every fireplace or retrofit. See EPA’s fireplace and retrofit guide. Treat “cozy warmth” as visual and atmospheric unless the specific appliance’s heating capability is established.
Protect clearances, venting, and indoor air during the work
A decorative refresh near a firebox is not just a finish decision. EPA installation guidance calls for proper clearance to combustible materials, floor protection, correct assembly, and professionally informed vent sizing and configuration. Before covering or building around a fireplace, check the appliance instructions and consult a qualified hearth professional. The EPA installation and maintenance guidance provides a starting point.
For masonry fireplaces, the 2024 International Code Council residential code chapter includes prescriptive examples for hearth extensions and clearances. The code that applies depends on local adoption, and listed-product instructions can impose requirements relevant to a specific installation. Check both rather than treating a general example as approval for your project. See ICC 2024 Chapter 10: Chimneys and Fireplaces.
Changes to combustion appliances can also affect indoor air. EPA warns that poorly vented or unvented appliances may introduce pollutants or excess moisture; it recommends following manuals and arranging professional inspection and maintenance. See EPA guidance on indoor environmental concerns during remodeling.
Keep a wood-burning fireplace ready for safe operation
For wood-burning fireplaces, EPA says wood burns best at less than 20 percent moisture and recommends checking it with a moisture meter. Keep combustibles away and follow the appliance instructions. These are practical operating considerations, not a substitute for checking the fireplace and chimney. EPA’s Burn Wise pages are historical material; the agency says the program ran from 2009 to 2025 and the site stopped being updated after October 30, 2025. See EPA’s best wood-burning practices.
If considering a retrofit for pollution reduction, EPA says fireplace retrofit devices can reduce pollution by up to 70 percent when properly installed. That is a qualified upper-bound claim, not a guaranteed result for every device or installation. EPA’s voluntary fireplace program distinguishes qualified units from units certified under the wood-heater standard. Check the program’s definitions and the specific product’s status at EPA’s Voluntary Fireplace Program.
