For a garden that smells good across more than one season, combine flowers with different bloom times and put them where you’ll pass or sit nearby. This curated selection of 23 fragrant flowers and flowering plants includes annuals, bulbs, perennials, shrubs, and vines; it is not a ranking, and the right choices depend on your climate and growing conditions.

How to choose fragrant flowers

Start with when you want fragrance, then match the plant form to your space. Annuals can fill a seasonal gap, bulbs bring spring color after fall planting, and shrubs and vines add longer-term structure. Scent also varies in strength and time of day, so choose for where you’ll actually encounter it.

  • For paths and entrances: Choose compact flowers or place containers near a doorway so their scent is close as you pass.
  • For evening seating: Include plants whose fragrance is noticeable in the evening, such as flowering tobacco, and site them near the area you use.
  • For a trellis or fence: Consider sweet pea or jasmine, checking the plant’s regional hardiness before planting outdoors.
  • For seasonal coverage: Combine spring bulbs and shrubs with summer flowers and plants that bloom at other times in your region.

The Royal Horticultural Society advises: “Scented plants are best grown in sheltered areas where the scent can be contained.” It also suggests putting smaller fragrant plants at the front of raised beds or in containers near the front door. RHS guidance on fragrant plants

23 fragrant flowers and plants to consider

Annuals and smaller flowers

  1. Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus): A fragrant annual climber for supports, useful when you want scent at eye level. Consider seeds for a seasonal planting.
  2. Sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima): A low-growing choice for bed edges and containers, where its small flowers can be close to a path.
  3. Stock (Matthiola): A fragrant flowering annual included in extension fragrance-garden recommendations; check the locally suitable type and growing conditions.
  4. Heliotrope: A fragrant annual option for seasonal beds or containers. Match its needs to your local climate.
  5. Flowering tobacco (Nicotiana): Some types are especially suited to evening fragrance. Missouri Extension recommends siting evening-scented Nicotiana near areas used in the evening.
  6. Petunia: Some varieties are fragrant; choose by the specific variety rather than assuming every petunia has noticeable scent.
  7. Marigold: An option in regional fragrant-plant lists, though fragrance varies by type and may not be the sweet floral scent some gardeners seek.
  8. Verbena: A flowering option included in University of Georgia Extension’s regional suggestions; verify local growing requirements.

Bulbs and spring flowers

  1. Hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis): Plant bulbs in fall for spring fragrance. University of Georgia Extension describes hyacinth as growing to under 12 inches in its Georgia guidance; it can suit a compact planting near a sidewalk. UGA Extension’s seasonal suggestions
  2. Sweet violet (Viola odorata): A small-scale fragrant flower to consider for a suitable site; check local conditions before choosing a planting location.
  3. Lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis): A fragrant spring flower for suitable garden conditions. Confirm that it fits your site and local planting guidance.

Perennials and herbaceous flowers

  1. Lavender: A familiar fragrant perennial. Select a type suited to your climate and the sun and moisture conditions in your garden.
  2. Dianthus: Some dianthus have a notably clove-like fragrance. Choose a fragrant type, since scent is not identical across all plants sold under this name.
  3. Phlox: A flowering perennial option in fragrant-plant lists. Check the particular phlox type for its mature size and growing needs.
  4. Peony: Fragrant varieties can add seasonal bloom and substantial flowers. Look for a variety described as scented rather than assuming all peonies smell alike.
  5. Fragrant lilies: Choose a scented lily type for a strong focal flower, and consider whether its fragrance suits the nearby seating or path.

Shrubs and woody plants

  1. Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides): Strong fragrance makes gardenia appealing, but it can be demanding and is not a universally reliable outdoor shrub. North Carolina State Extension lists ‘Scentsation’ as very fragrant and ‘Radicans’ as a dwarf groundcover form; consult the NCSU gardenia profile and local guidance before selecting one.
  2. Lilac: A fragrant shrub for gardens where its climate and space requirements suit the site. Check the mature size of the variety you choose.
  3. Mock orange (Philadelphus): A flowering shrub valued for fragrance. Confirm its mature size and suitability for your region.
  4. Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia): A fragrant shrub option in extension plant lists. Use local guidance to determine whether it suits your site’s conditions.
  5. Fragrant honeysuckle shrubs: Select a shrub form specifically; honeysuckle also includes climbing plants with different space and support needs.
  6. Fragrant roses: Rose scent varies widely among varieties. Choose a variety sold or described as fragrant and allow for its mature size.

Vines and climbers

  1. Jasmine, including star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) and common jasmine (Jasminum officinale): These are distinct plants, so check the name and hardiness of the one you are buying. UGA Extension describes star jasmine as an evergreen vine for trellises, arbors, or fences and notes a preference for four hours of morning sun in its Georgia recommendations; those conditions are not a universal prescription. The Associated Press reports star jasmine as perennial in USDA zones 7–10 and suggests a supported pot that can be moved indoors over winter elsewhere. Because regional advice can differ, confirm suitability with a local extension service before planting outdoors. Plan fragrance by season and setting

A useful mix spans different bloom periods rather than relying on one burst of scent. The RHS lists fragrant plants across seasons, while Missouri Extension recommends starting with a few plants you personally like and building the garden’s color scheme around them. Its guidance distinguishes heavy, pungent fragrances from lighter scents that linger. Missouri Extension’s fragrance-gardening advice

Check local conditions before planting

There is no single sun, soil, watering, or hardiness prescription that fits all 23 plants. Climate can determine whether a fragrant shrub or vine can live outdoors year-round, while cultivar differences affect size and scent. Regional extension advice is especially useful for gardenia and jasmine; for other plants, check the label and local recommendations for hardiness, exposure, moisture, mature size, and whether the plant suits a bed or container.

For Florida-specific fragrance-garden examples, including star jasmine and sweet alyssum, see UF/IFAS fragrance garden guidance. For broader seasonal and plant-form ideas, consult the RHS fragrant plant list.
