For U.S. sheet and plate iron and steel, 16 gauge is thicker than 18 gauge: the statutory values are 0.0625 inch (1.5875 mm) and 0.05 inch (1.27 mm), respectively. That makes 16 gauge 0.0125 inch (0.3175 mm) thicker, and 0.5 pound per square foot heavier. These figures apply to the steel gauge standard in 15 U.S.C. § 206, not to every material or gauge system.
16 gauge vs. 18 gauge: the key differences
| U.S. sheet and plate iron and steel gauge | Thickness | Listed weight per square foot |
|---|---|---|
| 16 gauge | 0.0625 in (1.5875 mm) | 2.5 lb/ft² |
| 18 gauge | 0.05 in (1.27 mm) | 2 lb/ft² |
| Difference | 16 gauge is 0.0125 in (0.3175 mm) thicker | 16 gauge is 0.5 lb/ft² heavier |
The 16- and 18-gauge thickness and weight values come from the table in 15 U.S.C. § 206, the U.S. standard for sheet and plate iron and steel. The difference row is calculated by subtracting the two statutory entries; it is not a separate published measurement. The statute does not establish which thickness is right for a particular construction application.
Why a lower gauge number means thicker steel
In this steel gauge standard, the numbers run opposite to thickness: 16 gauge is thicker than 18 gauge. The statute establishes a standard gauge for U.S. sheet and plate iron and steel; the numerical labels are not universal thickness units. Do not use these values for aluminum, wire, shotgun gauges, or another gauge convention without checking the applicable standard.
How to choose between 16- and 18-gauge steel
Gauge alone does not establish whether a sheet is suitable. Compare the specification and the demands of the job before ordering or installing it.

- Flat and Smooth:the surface of the metal plate is flat and smooth, and the edges are finely cut without burrs, which avoids scratches and effectively reduces the wear and tear of the equipment
- Flexible Processing: Easily supports welding, cutting, drilling, bending, painting, and other processes. base plate is ideal for DIY projects, equipment support, and industrial structures, meeting a wide variety of needs
- Package Contents: contains 2 pcs of 16 gauge steel plates, size 12 x 8 inch. Steel plates are covered with a protective oil coating that prevents rusting and is easy to clean and maintain
- Versatile Application: Ideal for metalworking, equipment maintenance, DIY projects, and industrial components. steel sheet is perfect for automotive repair, construction, home decor, and more
- Confirm material and standard: Make sure the gauge refers to sheet or plate iron and steel under the relevant U.S. standard, rather than a different metal or gauge system.
- Specify actual thickness: When precision matters, use the required thickness in inches or millimeters alongside the gauge designation. Product tolerances and coating effects are not established by the statutory table, so check the product specification.
- Account for weight: The statutory figures list 2.5 lb/ft² for 16 gauge and 2 lb/ft² for 18 gauge. Use the applicable product data when estimating installed weight; the table does not settle the weight of a finished, coated product.
- Check performance and fabrication requirements: Consider the application, alloy, finish, forming or bending needs, and anticipated loads. The gauge table does not provide design capacities or say how either thickness performs in a specific assembly.
- Follow project requirements: For safety- or code-sensitive work, follow the engineer’s direction, applicable code, or product specification instead of selecting a gauge by rule of thumb.
What the statutory values do—and do not—tell you
Section 206 states: “For the purpose of securing uniformity the following is established as the only standard gauge for sheet and plate iron and steel in the United States of America, namely:” The table gives reference thicknesses and weights for that stated scope. It does not resolve product tolerances, alloy, coating, fabrication suitability, or code compliance for an individual project. Check the current product documentation and applicable project requirements for those details.
