12 Types of Screw Heads and Drivers—and What They’re Best Used For

Screw head profile and drive are separate choices. Compare six common head styles and six drive types, then match the tool to the fastener.

Choose a screw head for how it should sit against the material; choose a drive for the tool that will turn it. They are separate features: a pan-head screw, for example, can have different drive styles. The twelve examples below are useful options, not a universal standard count. For a reliable fit, match the driver’s shape and size to the screw’s recess or external head.

First, separate the head from the drive

The head profile is the screw’s top shape. It affects how the screw bears on the material, whether it sits flush or above the surface, and how visible it is. The drive is the recess or external shape that engages the tool.

Feature What it controls Examples
Head profile Seating, contact with the material, clearance and appearance Flat for a flush finish; bugle for drywall; pan or round for a head that remains above the surface
Drive How the screw is turned and which tool fits Slotted, Phillips, square, Torx, internal hex or external hex

These are not competing categories. A screw combines a head profile with a drive style, and some screws use combination drives. Lowe’s notes that some heads are designed for countersunk holes, which are shallow depressions in the workpiece: Lowe’s Comprehensive Screws Buying Guide.

Six useful screw head profiles

1. Flat head

A flat head is intended to sit flush when installed in a suitable countersunk hole. It is a practical choice when a protruding head would interfere with the finished surface or nearby parts. The Home Depot/Everbilt fastener reference describes it as suitable “where finished surfaces require a flush fastening unit”: Fasteners: Product Category, Machine Screws & Hex Bolts, p. 3.

2. Bugle head

Bugle heads have a curved underside and are commonly used for drywall. They can sit flush with the surface when installed appropriately, helping avoid a broad, raised head. Choose a screw made for the material and application rather than assuming every bugle-head screw is interchangeable.

3. Oval head

An oval head leaves a rounded, slightly raised top. Use it when a more finished or decorative appearance is wanted and a flush top is not required.

4. Pan head

A pan head has a broad, relatively low profile and remains above the surface. It is useful when the screw needs a visible bearing surface rather than a countersunk, flush finish. The head profile does not dictate the drive; pan-head screws are available with different drives.

5. Round head

A round head is domed and stands proud of the material. Its exposed shape can suit visible fastening, but it is not the choice for a flush surface.

6. Trim head

Trim heads have a smaller profile, making the fastener less conspicuous in finishing work. They are useful where appearance matters, but the specific screw still needs to suit the material and load.

7. Slotted

A slotted drive has one straight groove and takes a flat-blade screwdriver or matching bit. It is simple to identify, but the driver can slip out of the slot under torque. Lowe’s characterizes slotted drives as prone to cam-out—when the driver climbs out of the recess as turning force is applied.

  • CONVENIENT STORAGE – Packed in a sturdy, compact case with labeled slots for each piece, this set guarantees neat organization and easy portability. Featuring double drivers, cross tips, and clutch drives, everything you need is in one place.

8. Phillips

A Phillips drive has a cross-shaped recess and takes a Phillips driver of the correct size. It is widely recognized, but using the wrong size or applying high torque can cause the bit to cam out. Do not assume that every cross-shaped recess is Phillips; Pozidriv and other drive designs can look similar.

9. Square (Robertson)

A square drive has a square recess and needs a matching square bit. Lowe’s says square drives reduce cam-out compared with slotted and Phillips and often hold the driver well for single-handed work. This is retailer guidance, not a controlled comparison proving a universal performance advantage.

10. Star (Torx)

A Torx drive has a six-lobed star-shaped recess and takes a matching Torx bit. Lowe’s likewise describes star drives as reducing cam-out and often enabling single-handed driving. Match the bit size carefully; a star shape alone does not identify the correct size.

11. Hex socket (Allen)

A hex socket has an internal hexagonal recess. Turn it with a matching hex key (often called an Allen key) or an appropriate hex bit. It is different from a screw with an external hexagonal head.

12. External hex

An external hex head has six flat sides on the outside rather than a recess. Turn it with a correctly sized wrench or socket and ratchet. Do not use an Allen key: that fits an internal hex socket, not an external hex head.

How to choose the right head and driver

  1. Decide how the surface should finish. Choose a head profile for the required seating and appearance: flat or bugle when a flush finish is appropriate, oval for a rounded decorative top, pan or round when a raised head is acceptable, or trim when a less visible head is useful.
  2. Identify the drive separately. Look at the recess or the outside of the head to determine which tool engages it. Do not infer the drive from the head profile.
  3. Fit the tool before applying force. Use the matching driver shape and size. A loose or incorrect fit can slip or damage the screw head.
  4. Consider the work method. If driving one-handed or managing cam-out matters, square and Torx are options Lowe’s says often grip the driver well; actual results depend on the screw and tool.
  5. Check for an unfamiliar or security drive. Drive families extend beyond common household types. The Home Depot/Everbilt reference catalogs Phillips, Frearson, slotted, Robertson, Quadrex, Pozidriv, hex socket, Torx and security drives. The Phillips Screw Company’s current catalog also illustrates the range of drive-system designs: Drive Systems.

Phillips versus Pozidriv: why the distinction matters

Both drives use cross-like recesses, but they are distinct designs. A Phillips bit is not a dependable substitute for a Pozidriv bit, or vice versa: a poor fit can slip and damage the recess. Inspect the screw closely and use the driver marked for the drive and size. The Home Depot/Everbilt reference lists Phillips and Pozidriv as separate drive families.

Quick Recap

Quick selection guide

  • Need the screw to sit flush? Consider a flat head, or a bugle head where the screw and material are intended for that use.
  • Want a visible, rounded top? Consider an oval or round head; an oval head has a more decorative profile.
  • Want a low-profile, less conspicuous finish? Consider a trim head.
  • See a square, star, cross or straight slot? Match it to a square, Torx, Phillips or slotted driver of the correct size, respectively; verify cross-like drives rather than guessing.
  • See a hexagon? Check whether it is an internal socket for a hex key or an external head for a wrench or socket.
