These ten options offer varied flower or foliage color, but “easy” means a plant is matched to its site—not maintenance-free. The profiles below draw on UK Royal Horticultural Society guidance and, for blanket flower, University of Illinois Extension information; check each plant’s hardiness and cultivar suitability for your own region.
Ten colorful perennials for sunny beds
Bloom timing and dimensions can vary with climate and cultivar. Where a cited profile gives a specific season or height, it is identified below; where the available profile does not establish a detail, check the plant label or a regional source before planting.
1. Blanket flower (Gaillardia × grandiflora)
Illinois Extension describes orange, red, and yellow flowers from June to October and calls this an easy-to-grow, long-blooming perennial. It suits full sun and dry soil, tolerates heat and drought, and needs very well-drained soil for winter survival. Deadhead for continued bloom and avoid excessive fertilizer. The hardiness information on the [Illinois Extension profile](https://extension.illinois.edu/ plants/blanket-flower) is US-specific; verify regional suitability rather than applying it elsewhere.
2. Daylily (Hemerocallis)
Daylilies are adaptable, but grow best in fertile, well-drained soil with some moisture during the growing season. Established plants tolerate drought, though flowering may diminish. Full sun is preferred; in scorching conditions, richer flower colors can bleach. See the [RHS daylily guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/daylily/growing-guide) for growing guidance and check the chosen cultivar’s local hardiness.

The foliage can look untidy after flowering, so this is a useful edging or ground-level texture plant where that seasonal change is acceptable. 4. Woodland sage (Salvia nemorosa ‘Amethyst’)
This cultivar produces purple flowers from June to October and is described by the RHS as easy and prolific. Match the perennial to the bed
“Full sun” does not mean all ten plants want the same soil or watering. Blanket flower is suited to dry conditions and needs sharp drainage, while phlox calls for moist, fertile soil. Daylilies occupy a middle ground: they adapt to a range of soils, prefer moisture while growing, and can cope with drought after establishment at the cost of fewer flowers.
- For a dry, well-drained spot: consider blanket flower or showy stonecrop, after checking local hardiness.
- For a bed where you can provide moisture: consider phlox or Shasta daisy, keeping drainage in mind.
- For foliage contrast: lamb’s ear contributes silver leaves as well as small summer flowers.
- For seasonal color: use the stated bloom periods as a planning guide, not a guarantee; local climate and cultivar affect flowering.
Planting and care that keep “easy” realistic
Prepare the site and check the label
Before planting, weed and prepare the bed, then confirm the plant’s light, soil, moisture, and hardiness requirements. The RHS says hardy perennials are generally best planted outdoors in spring or autumn, and that most settle in reliably when planted appropriately. Container plants are widely available; selected kinds and seasons may also offer bare-root plants. [RHS guide to growing perennial plants](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/perennials/growing-guide)
Water during establishment
Drought-tolerant does not mean no water straight after planting. Roots need time to establish, and the RHS dry-garden guidance notes that some initial watering may be necessary before plants can cope with dry conditions. Organic matter can help soil retain moisture in summer, but do not use that as a reason to keep plants that need sharp drainage in soggy soil. [RHS dry-garden plan](https://www.rhs.org.uk/garden-design/dry-garden-plan)
Expect small, plant-specific jobs
- Deadhead blanket flower if you want to encourage continued flowering.
- Provide discreet support for Oriental poppy flowers where rain may damage them.
- Accept that lamb’s ear foliage may look untidy after flowering; site it where this is less conspicuous.
- Water moisture-preferring plants during dry spells, especially before they are established; drought can reduce daylily flowering.
For any cultivar, compare the plant label with local climate guidance before purchase. The RHS recommends checking labels and placing perennials where their requirements are met; its hardiness scale and a US extension profile are not interchangeable regional guarantees.
