Choose an accent wall that relates to the room’s focal point, furnishings, and existing finishes, then match its material and installation to the wall’s exposure and substrate. A dry living-room feature wall, a kitchen splash surface, and a shower wall face different conditions, so no single material or location is best for every room.
Before installing paint, tile, trim, or panels, inspect the wall and plan how the finish will meet openings and edges. In wet areas, tile and grout alone do not prevent water from reaching the wall behind them.
Start With the Room’s Focal Point
An accent wall is a focal surface. In a living room, consider how the wall relates to seating, a fireplace, or other furnishings. In a kitchen or bathroom, consider both the visual role of the wall and its exposure to splashes, cleaning, and moisture. A blank wall is not automatically the right choice; the finish should feel connected to the room rather than added without a reason.
There is no universal best accent wall. Compare possible locations and materials by their exposure and cleaning needs, the existing wall and attachment requirements, their fit with the room’s palette and patterns, and the installation and maintenance they will require.

Match the Finish to the Room
Kitchens
Kitchen walls do not all face the same conditions. A dining-area wall differs from a surface that meets cooking splashes or frequent cleaning. Tile can be one durable visual option in a splash or cleaning zone, but consider how the tile and grout will be maintained and what lies behind them. Paint and panel or trim treatments are other possibilities where they suit the wall’s exposure.
Consider the cabinets, counters, floors, furnishings, and other patterns when choosing a finish. A strong pattern or texture can compete with existing finishes, while a quieter surface may help balance them. These are design considerations, not fixed rules; assess the actual room before deciding.
Bathrooms
Distinguish a dry vanity wall from a shower wall. They face different moisture conditions and should not be treated as the same installation. Choose materials with the location and expected exposure in mind, and follow applicable requirements and current product instructions.

Tile and grout are not, by themselves, waterproofing. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Kitchen and Baths guide warns: “Tile is susceptible to water penetration at the joints; if the grout becomes wet water can seep behind the wall tile and damage the substrate.” Plan a suitable wet-area assembly rather than relying on the decorative surface alone.
Living spaces
Paint, board and batten, shiplap, applied panel moulding, slat walls, and tile are among the options described in contractor guidance. Select a wall with a clear visual relationship to the room’s furniture and palette, and confirm that the existing substrate can support the chosen finish and attachment method.
Plan Before Installation
- Inspect the wall. Identify its condition, substrate, and exposure to moisture, splashes, and cleaning before settling on a finish.
- Choose the location and material together. Compare visual fit, maintenance, exposure, and attachment needs rather than choosing from appearance alone.
- Lay out the design. Account for switches, outlets, doors, windows, wall edges, and other features that affect the composition of applied boards, trim, or panels.
- Check installation requirements. For wet areas and heavier or applied finishes, consult applicable local requirements, relevant professional standards, and current manufacturer instructions.
- Plan care after installation. Consider whether the finish and its joints can be cleaned and maintained in the room where they will be used.
Builder’s Dos and Don’ts
Do inspect the wall and its exposure
A finish suitable for a dry living space may not suit a splash-exposed surface or a shower. Check the actual location, substrate, and maintenance demands before choosing materials.

- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
Do plan around openings and edges
Before installing applied boards or trim, work out the layout around switches, outlets, doors, windows, and the wall’s edges. A careful plan helps the composition fit the real wall rather than ignoring its interruptions.
Don’t assume tile and grout keep water out
Wet grout joints can allow water behind tile and damage the substrate, as HUD explains in its Kitchen and Baths guide. Treat a shower wall as a wet-area assembly, and follow applicable requirements and current product instructions.
Don’t treat practitioner advice as code
Contractor guidance can help with design and layout, but it is not a substitute for applicable codes, professional standards, or product instructions. Requirements may depend on the project and location; check with the relevant local authority or qualified professional when needed.

How do I choose an accent wall that works in a kitchen, bathroom, or living room?
Choose a wall that relates to the room’s focal point and furnishings, then match the finish to the wall’s exposure, substrate, and maintenance needs. A dry living-room wall, a kitchen splash surface, and a shower wall require different considerations.
Is tile and grout enough to waterproof a shower accent wall?
No. HUD warns that water can seep behind wall tile through wet grout joints and damage the substrate. Use an appropriate wet-area assembly and follow applicable requirements and current product instructions.
