ZZ Plant Care Guide: How to Take Care of a ZZ Plant

A ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) handles low light and dry spells, but it does best with bright indirect light, well-drained soil, and a thorough watering only after the soil has dried. Here is how to apply that rule in practice.

A ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an East African aroid grown as an indoor foliage plant, and it is one of the more forgiving houseplants you can own. Forgiving is not the same as ideal. The plant does best with bright, indirect light, a well-drained potting mix, a thorough watering followed by a real dry-down period, and no standing water in its pot or saucer. Everything below is built around that rule.

Where to place a ZZ plant

Bright, indirect light is the best general placement. A spot a few feet back from an east- or north-facing window, or near a bright window that does not receive direct sun, suits most homes. The plant can tolerate very low light, and that is useful if your room is dim, but it is a survival tolerance rather than an ideal. A ZZ plant kept in a dark corner will not be growing at its best.

Avoid direct afternoon sun. Iowa State University Extension cautions that it can damage the foliage. If you move a plant from a shadier spot into a sunnier one, do it gradually rather than all at once.

How often to water a ZZ plant

Water by soil condition, not by the calendar. The usual guidance is a thorough watering roughly every 7 to 14 days, and that interval is a starting point only. Light, temperature, pot size and potting mix all change how quickly the soil dries, so a plant on a bright windowsill in a fast-draining mix may need water sooner than one in a dim room with dense soil.

Use this routine each time you consider watering:

  1. Push a finger or a wooden skewer about an inch or more into the potting mix. If it feels damp or cool, do not water yet.
  2. Once the soil has dried well, water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes.
  3. Pour off the excess from the saucer or cachepot within a few minutes so the root ball does not sit in water.
  4. Wait for the soil to dry again before the next watering, and check it rather than counting days.

The sources do not agree on a single interval, and they describe the rule differently:

Source Watering guidance stated Date of source
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Water thoroughly so some water drains from the bottom, discard the excess, and let the soil dry before watering again; a thorough watering every 7 to 14 days is usually fine in many cases February 4, 2009
North Carolina State Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox In summer, water only when the soil has dried completely Not stated
University of Florida IFAS Extension Warns that poorly drained soil combined with excessive water over an extended period raises root-rot risk; a fixed interval is not given in the material reviewed Not stated

The common thread is dryness between waterings. Treat the 7 to 14 day figure as a ceiling to check against, not a schedule to follow when the soil is still wet.

Potting mix and drainage

Choose a well-drained potting medium, and do not let the plant sit in water or stay in compacted, wet soil. Persistently wet, poorly drained conditions are the main route to root rot, according to University of Florida IFAS Extension. A container with drainage holes lets excess water escape, which is why it is a reasonable choice. No specific pot or brand is required by the extension guidance, so the practical test is whether the pot can release its excess water.

If you are buying supplies, look for a well-draining indoor potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Both are category-level choices that support the drainage requirement. Neither is mandatory, and neither substitutes for checking the soil before you water.

Feeding

Iowa State recommends a dilute fertilizer once or twice a month during spring and summer. Treat this as that source’s suggestion rather than a universal requirement. ZZ plants grow slowly, so feeding is a supplement to a healthy plant, not a substitute for correct light and watering, and it is not a reason to fertilize heavily.

Growth expectations and propagation

Expect slow growth. A ZZ plant often puts out new stems in spurts rather than steadily, and a plant that appears to stall for weeks may still be developing underground. Iowa State lists leaf cuttings and division as propagation methods, and the University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Center’s ZZ plant fact sheet, dated 2019, is another reference for the plant’s propagation and growth habit.

No fixed rooting timeline is established by these sources. Plan for weeks to months, not days, and do not judge a cutting or division by a set schedule.

Safety around people and pets

Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets. Iowa State describes ZZ plants as poisonous to people and pets if ingested. North Carolina State Extension identifies a medium level of toxicity to cats and dogs. The guidance reviewed does not establish how much plant material causes a problem, how quickly symptoms appear, or what treatment is needed, so do not treat a small nibble as harmless on that basis.
