The Yidan Center is a Zaha Hadid Architects-designed education and cultural complex under construction in Shenzhen’s Qianhai area. It is planned as more than an office building: the project combines the Chen Yidan Foundation and Yidan Prize headquarters with education platforms, cultural activities and public learning experiences. Construction milestones reported in 2025 show the structure nearing completion and later reaching full height, but do not establish that the building is finished or open.

What is the Yidan Center?

The Yidan Center is a mixed-use education and cultural project designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA). ZHA describes it as a 165,815 m² project; a September 2025 Shenzhen Daily report published by EYESHENZHEN gives an approximate floor area of 166,500 square metres. The sources do not explain the difference, so the figures should be treated as separate reported totals rather than combined. ZHA’s project page and the EYESHENZHEN report provide those figures.

The project is intended to house the Chen Yidan Foundation and serve as the Yidan Prize’s international headquarters. Its planned activities also include education research and practice, events, exhibitions and YiPai public learning experiences. EYESHENZHEN describes office, education, cultural and commercial uses, and says YiPai is planned for the podium. These are intended uses, not confirmation that the facilities or programs are currently operating.

Where is it being built?

The center is in Shenzhen’s Qianhai/Qianwan area, near Qianhai Museum and Harrow International School. It sits across Dachan Bay from Tencent’s new headquarters campus. The location and project context are described by the Yidan Center’s official website and EYESHENZHEN.

How does the design organize the building?

ZHA’s concept draws on mountainous canyons and historic routes of travel and communication. The design centers on an outdoor canyon, with terraces and balconies overlooking the shared space. Gardens are intended to guide visitors toward it, while a large oculus skylight is designed to bring daylight into indoor public areas. The center’s website describes a related idea of “unity between heaven and humanity” and presents the project as a lifelong-learning complex joining office space and education practice.

These features express design intent: the available project descriptions do not provide post-occupancy evidence about how people use the spaces or how well they perform. ZHA lists external louvers for solar shading, insulated double-glazed units, hybrid natural ventilation, a variable air volume system, photovoltaic panels, and rainwater collection and reuse among the planned systems. The architect also states that the design is intended to meet China’s three-star National Green Building standard and LEED Gold. Those are targets; the project information does not confirm certification or measured operating performance.

What has been reported about construction?

The most recent dated construction milestone in the sources is a November 5, 2025 report from the Council on Vertical Urbanism, which said the project had reached full height, or topped out. Topping out marks a structural milestone; it does not mean that interior construction, commissioning or fit-out is complete, or that the building has opened. Council on Vertical Urbanism’s report records the milestone.

Earlier, on September 1, 2025, EYESHENZHEN, carrying a Shenzhen Daily report, said around 96% of structural construction was complete. That report gave a height of 139.18 metres, about 166,500 square metres of floor area, 24 above-ground storeys—including five podium levels—and three underground levels. These measurements and progress figures belong to that dated report; they are not a current completion certification.

When will the Yidan Center open?

No firm completion or opening date is established by the cited sources. ZHA lists the project schedule as “2021 – TBC.” The later 2025 reports document structural progress and topping out, but neither provides an opening date. The available information therefore supports describing the project as under construction, not announcing that it is complete or open.
