In the United States, Google lists the feature in early access, but it is not enabled for every account at once. If your household uses a personal Google account, has compatible hardware and current software, and sees the Gemini setup banner in the Google Home app, you can activate it without buying a new speaker.
Basic Gemini for Home features are free. Gemini Live, Home Brief and some camera features require Google Home Premium. Most importantly, Google says the household-wide switch cannot be reversed after you enable it.
What “Gemini on Google Home” actually means
Gemini for Home is an upgrade to the voice assistant used by compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. It is not simply the Gemini mobile app being installed on a speaker.

These are related but separate products:
- Gemini for Home voice assistant: the household voice-assistant upgrade that handles questions, media, timers, lists, reminders and smart-home requests.
- Gemini mobile app: a phone-based AI experience that can interact with a home in some ways, such as broadcasting messages. Installing it does not force a speaker to upgrade.
- Ask Home: natural-language controls and automation assistance inside the Google Home app.
- Gemini camera features: AI descriptions, Home Brief and natural-language camera-history searches with additional plan and hardware requirements.
Can you use it in the United States now?
Google lists the United States among the countries receiving Gemini for Home early access. Availability is staged, however, so a US account may still lack the invitation or setup banner. Country, language, account type, app version, device firmware and household eligibility can all affect access.
The quickest eligibility test is simple: open Google Home and look in Home settings for a Gemini setup banner. If it is present, your household can begin the upgrade. If it is missing, enrollment does not guarantee immediate access.
Check these requirements first
- Use a personal Google account. Google says Workspace and corporate accounts may not support the voice-assistant upgrade.
- Use a supported country and language.
- Update the Google Home app. Google’s current troubleshooting guidance specifies version 4.1 or later; an earlier launch announcement referred to version 4.0 or later.
- Update Android’s Speech Recognition and Synthesis component if you are setting up on Android.
- Check that your speaker or display has current firmware. Google lists Cast firmware 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or later for displays.
- Make sure Google Groups settings allow your account to join groups if you are requesting early access.
Supported Google Home and Nest devices
Google’s support documentation separates devices with complete voice-assistant support from older hardware that supports most features but not Gemini Live.

You do not need the new Google Home Speaker simply to obtain basic Gemini access. Several existing Nest products are listed as supporting the complete voice assistant. New hardware makes sense only if you need a newer speaker, a display, different audio performance or the specific Google Home Speaker experience.

Important: the upgrade is household-wide and irreversible
Read this before tapping “Get started.” Google says that once a home switches to the Gemini for Home voice assistant, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. The change applies to the home rather than just one person or one speaker: everyone in the household gets Gemini for Home, and compatible devices added later use Gemini instead of Google Assistant.
If you rely on older hardware, prefer the existing Assistant experience or are not comfortable with an irreversible early-access change, waiting is the safer option.
How to request early access
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Tap Home settings.
- Tap Early access.
- Confirm that your Google Groups settings allow you to join groups.
- Wait for Google to notify you when Gemini for Home becomes available for the household.
This is Gemini for Home early access, not the separate Public Preview program for the Google Home app.

- Tap the notification.
- Tap Get started.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Review Google’s disclosures and configure voice-assistant and response-filtering settings.
If you dismissed the notification, open Google Home and go to Profile picture or initial → Home settings. Look for the banner “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations.” Tap Get started and finish the prompts.
How to confirm that Gemini is active
In Google Home, open Home settings and check whether the assistant is identified as Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant.
Google also says the voice list can help: color-named voices indicate Google Assistant, while plant-named voices, such as “Pothos,” indicate Gemini for Home. You can also ask the assistant who it is; Google says Gemini for Home should identify itself as a language-learning model.
What you get without a subscription
Basic Gemini for Home does not require Google Home Premium. Google lists these no-subscription capabilities:

Results can vary by country, language, linked service and device. Gemini should not be treated as an authority for medical, legal, security or emergency decisions.
What Google Home Premium adds
Google Home Premium is not required for the basic assistant. It is relevant if you want Gemini Live, enhanced camera intelligence or Home Brief.

Google announced US pricing on October 1, 2025 of $10 per month or $100 per year for Standard and $20 per month or $200 per year for Advanced. Verify the current checkout price because subscriptions and benefits can change. Google says Home Premium is included with Google AI Pro, which includes Standard, and Google AI Ultra, which includes Advanced. The broader Google AI plans may be unnecessary if you only want Gemini on a speaker.
How Gemini Live works
Gemini Live is a conversational mode that supports back-and-forth discussion, interruptions, follow-up questions and topic changes. Start it by saying:

“Hey Google, let’s chat.”
Ordinary smart-home actions are not handled inside the live conversation. Say “Hey Google” again to issue a normal command; Google says doing so ends the chat so the action can be completed. Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium and is unavailable on the original Google Home, Google Home Max, Nest Wifi point and third-party speakers.

Camera AI is not automatically included with Gemini for Home voice access. Google says camera features depend on the subscription tier, supported cameras set up in the Google Home app, adult-administrator status, language and regional availability. Advanced features can include AI event descriptions, Home Brief and searchable video history.
If camera features are missing, check the official camera-feature requirements rather than assuming the voice-assistant upgrade failed.

Troubleshooting when Gemini does not appear
No Early access option
The rollout may not have reached your account or household. Other possible causes include an unsupported country or language, blocked Google Groups enrollment, an outdated app or firmware, or use of a Workspace account.

You enrolled but see no setup banner
- Update Google Home to version 4.1 or later.
- On Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
- Check speaker or display firmware.
- Confirm that the home uses a personal Google account.
- Check the assistant language and country availability.
- Reopen Home settings and look for the Gemini banner.
- Do not expect installing the Gemini phone app to force the speaker upgrade.
Gemini works on one device but not another
Feature eligibility depends on the household, device model, firmware and specific feature. A home can have Gemini for Home on compatible devices while an older or third-party speaker lacks Gemini Live or another advanced capability.
A smart-home device does not respond
The device must be linked through a supported Google Home integration. To check:
- Open Google Home.
- Tap Add.
- Tap Link apps or services.
- Tap Works with Google.
- Search for the manufacturer or service.
If the partner does not appear, Google says it is likely incompatible. See Google’s supported-services guidance.

Should you turn it on?
- Enable it now if the banner is available, you want more natural conversations and you accept early-access limitations and the lack of a return path.
- Wait if you depend on older speakers, dislike subscriptions, need predictable Assistant behavior or want the option to switch back.
- Consider Home Premium Standard mainly for Gemini Live and related enhanced features.
- Consider Advanced only if your household has eligible cameras and you specifically want Home Brief or advanced camera search and summaries.
- Buy new hardware only when you need the hardware itself. It is not a universal prerequisite for basic Gemini access.
