4 Ways Your Smart Home Gadgets Will Change in 2026

The biggest smart-home change in 2026 is happening in software, not necessarily inside every gadget. Speakers, apps, hubs, and subscription services are becoming better at understanding natural language, coordinating devices, interpreting camera events, and managing energy. At the same time, Matter and Thread are making mixed-brand homes more practical—but not automatically seamless.

For homeowners, renters, and anyone upgrading a connected home, the important question is not simply whether a product says “AI” or “Matter.” It is what still works without the internet, which features require a subscription, whether the required hub is already installed, and how well the device works with the platform you actually use.

1. Your smart speaker will become a conversational home controller

Traditional voice control follows a command pattern: “Turn on the kitchen lights.” The next generation is designed to understand more natural requests, follow-up questions, and combinations of devices.

Google announced Gemini for Home on October 1, 2025, describing it as a new layer for Google Home with more conversational interaction and improved camera and doorbell understanding. Google’s 2026 support documentation also describes Continued Conversation, faster smart-home control, and expanded lock controls. A new Google Home Speaker introduced on June 17, 2026, is built around these Gemini features.

Apple previewed next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri capabilities on June 8, 2026, but that announcement is a software preview—not proof that every HomePod or HomeKit device immediately receives every feature. Amazon is also developing more natural-language smart-home capabilities through its Alexa platform; its developer documentation covers newer integrations and Matter requirements.

In practical terms, AI-powered control may mean:

  • Conversational control: “Make the kitchen brighter, but leave the counters dim.”
  • Context: The assistant understands a follow-up such as “Now turn them off.”
  • Scene creation: You describe an evening routine and the system builds an automation.
  • Event interpretation: A camera reports that a package was left at the door instead of sending only a motion alert.
  • Advice and diagnosis: The assistant explains why a device appears offline or suggests a routine.
What changes: Existing lights, plugs, locks, and thermostats may be easier to control through an updated speaker or app.
What does not: A bulb does not gain new sensors, a camera does not become infallible, and an old speaker is not guaranteed to support every new AI feature.

Much of the intelligence remains in a cloud service, phone app, smart speaker, display, or home hub. Advanced camera-history search, for example, is associated with Google Home Premium in Google’s 2026 material. Basic control may remain available without a paid plan, while long-term video history, advanced AI searches, or premium automations may not.

Expect failures too: compound commands can be misunderstood, an assistant can select the wrong room, a camera can misclassify a person or animal, and a cloud outage can disable features that appear to be “local.” Do not make an AI assistant the sole safeguard for a lock, heater, oven, garage door, or security system.

2. Matter and Thread will make mixed-brand homes easier—but not effortless

Matter is an interoperability standard. It gives manufacturers and platforms a common way to discover, commission, control, and update supported devices. It is not a promise that every brand exposes identical features everywhere.

Thread is different. Matter is the application and compatibility layer; Thread is one low-power mesh network that Matter devices may use. Matter devices can also use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A Thread device generally needs a Thread border router to connect its mesh network to your home network.

Home Assistant reported support work for Matter 1.5.1 and Thread 1.4-related improvements on June 23, 2026, while noting that Matter 1.6 was forthcoming. Matter 1.5 adds important device categories and capabilities, including security cameras, video doorbells, baby-monitor-related camera categories, window coverings, awnings, gates, garage-related closures, and more sophisticated energy and tariff data. These additions create a common route for manufacturers, but consumer support depends on the device, controller, firmware, and platform.

Amazon’s 2026 Works with Alexa documentation requires new Matter lighting and power products seeking certification to support Matter Simple Setup from January 31, 2026. Existing certified products must add and verify that capability by July 31, 2026 to retain the badge. Amazon’s cited certification pathway refers to Matter 1.5 or lower; that is an Amazon certification requirement, not a statement that Matter itself stops at version 1.5.

Matter is helpful, but it does not solve everything

Matter does not automatically provide identical camera recording, AI recognition, energy dashboards, schedules, or proprietary effects across Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. A device may be Matter-certified yet expose only basic on/off control in one ecosystem and advanced functions in another.

Check before buying Why it matters
Exact Matter device type “Matter-compatible” is less useful than knowing whether it is a light, lock, camera, shade, sensor, or another supported type.
Transport Confirm whether it uses Matter over Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.
Controller Verify that your Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant controller supports it.
Optional features Brand-specific effects, advanced camera detection, mapping, and energy functions may remain outside Matter.
Updates Certification does not guarantee years of firmware support.
Cloud dependency Find out what continues working during an internet or vendor-cloud outage.

3. Cameras, locks, energy devices, and sensors will become more proactive

Smart-home products are moving beyond isolated alerts and manual commands. The more useful systems will connect events, occupancy, schedules, and energy conditions into coordinated routines.

  • A camera may describe “a package was left at the door.”
  • A lock may provide event history, battery status, passcodes, guest access, and notifications through a supported home app.
  • A thermostat may adjust schedules using occupancy or energy conditions.
  • Shades, garage doors, gates, and awnings can become participants in broader arrival, departure, and comfort routines.
  • An assistant may create or modify an automation from a natural-language request.

Google’s 2026 support material describes lock history, notifications, battery status, passcodes, guest access, and advanced settings in Google Home. That does not mean every lock brand exposes every control, or that the same controls appear in every platform.

Aeotec Smart Home Hub2 - V4, Works as a SmartThings Hub, Zigbee, Matter Gateway, Compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, WiFi (No Z-Wave)
  • Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
  • Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

These features are most valuable when they reduce repetitive work. A “left home” routine could turn down the thermostat, close shades, switch off selected lights, and notify you if a door remains unlocked. But the system needs conservative rules, clear permissions, and a manual override.

Safety and accuracy still matter

AI-generated descriptions can be wrong. A system may confuse an animal with a person, miss an event, or report a package inaccurately. Occupancy detection can also be unreliable when someone is sleeping, working in a separate room, or carrying a phone that is not associated with the home.

For locks and garage doors, require confirmation before remote opening or unlocking. Keep physical controls for lighting and essential loads. Do not rely on an automated routine as the only protection against a heater, oven, water leak, or security risk. Decide what should happen if the hub, router, internet connection, cloud account, or electricity fails.

4. The market will divide between cloud convenience and local control

In 2026, the most capable and easiest-to-use smart-home features will often depend on platform services. Cloud processing can support conversational assistants, camera search, remote access, shared accounts, and long-term event history. The trade-off is recurring cost, account dependence, internet reliance, and questions about voice, video, occupancy, and routine data.

Local-control systems take the opposite approach. Home Assistant emphasizes open standards, local operation, and user ownership; its open-home project describes that direction, while its Matter documentation covers the platform’s evolving support.

Local automation can continue working when the internet is unavailable and may reduce the amount of sensitive data sent to external servers. It can also require more setup, troubleshooting, compatible hardware, and maintenance. Local control is not automatically private: mobile apps, integrations, backups, remote access, and optional services may still use external servers.

For many households, a hybrid approach is the practical middle ground: local schedules and safety-related automations, with cloud services used selectively for remote access, conversational control, or advanced camera analysis.

Will your existing gadgets work with the new AI?

Compatibility has several layers:

  1. Radio and protocol: Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Bluetooth affect how the device connects.
  2. Platform: Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant each implement support differently.
  3. Device category: A Matter light may be widely supported while an advanced camera feature remains platform-specific.
  4. Account and plan: Some functions may depend on a vendor account or premium subscription.
  5. Hardware generation: A hub, speaker, display, or border router may need specific hardware and software.
Device Likely 2026 improvement Possible restriction
Bulb or plug Easier setup, natural-language scenes, and potentially faster control Brand-specific effects and schedules
Camera or doorbell Better event descriptions and search Cloud history, AI detection, and storage tiers
Smart lock History, passcodes, guest access, and automation Platform support, security requirements, and battery reporting
Thermostat More adaptive scheduling and energy optimization Utility integrations and regional availability
Robot vacuum More natural room-based commands and routines Mapping and proprietary functions

Google’s current Home experience aims to simplify the distinction between Matter devices, “Works with Google Home” products, and Nest products. That makes setup clearer, but it does not make every feature portable between ecosystems.

What to buy in 2026

Buy now when:

  • You need the device today and its core function is already reliable.
  • It is Matter-certified, if cross-platform flexibility matters to you.
  • You know whether it uses Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.
  • You already have—or are intentionally buying—the required controller or Thread border router.
  • Basic operation works without a mandatory subscription or permanent cloud connection.
  • The product has physical controls and a documented firmware-update policy.

Wait when:

  • The main selling point is an announced but unreleased AI feature.
  • The device requires a new hub that has not shipped.
  • The company has not explained subscription pricing or data retention.
  • The product is locked to a platform you may leave.
  • It is safety-critical and has unclear offline behavior.
  • It says “Matter-ready” without clearly identifying certification, device type, controller support, and transport.

Ten questions to ask before checkout

  1. Is it Matter-certified, or merely compatible with one platform?
  2. Does it use Matter over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet?
  3. Do I own a compatible controller or Thread border router?
  4. Does the advertised AI feature require a paid plan?
  5. What works if the internet goes down?
  6. Can I control it manually?
  7. Does the manufacturer provide over-the-air updates?
  8. Where are camera recordings, voice data, occupancy information, and routines stored?
  9. Will advanced features work in every ecosystem I use?
  10. What happens if the vendor shuts down its app or cloud service?

The bottom line for homeowners and renters

Smart-home gadgets will not all become autonomous in 2026. The meaningful change is that assistants, standards, hubs, and cloud services are becoming more capable and more interconnected.

Choose products based on the experience you need, not the most ambitious promise on the box. Prefer certified Matter devices when platform flexibility matters, confirm the exact Thread and hub requirements, treat AI as a bonus until it works reliably in your ecosystem, and check subscription and outage behavior before buying cameras or security products. Keep manual controls and safe fallbacks—especially for locks, garages, heating, cooking, and other systems where an incorrect automation can cause harm.
