The Sun Tower in Yantai, China, is both a 50 m (164 ft) observation and cultural building and a large-scale instrument for reading the Sun. Its walls, tunnel, theater and surrounding plaza align with specific solar events, turning the building’s form and landscape into a public calendar.
Where is the Sun Tower?
The Sun Tower stands on the shoreline of Yantai, in eastern China. Designed by OPEN Architecture, with Arup collaborating on the project, the 50 m (164 ft) structure combines an observation point with cultural and public spaces. The height is the project measurement reported by New Atlas on 4 November 2024.
How does the Sun Tower work like a sundial?
The design relates key parts of the building to the Sun’s position at particular times of year. OPEN Architecture described the approach this way: “Informed by meticulous studies of the Sun, the northern edge of the building is parallel to the noon sunlight of the equinoxes, while the entrance tunnel aligns with the sunset during the Winter Solstice,” as quoted by New Atlas.
- Equinox noon: The building’s northern edge runs parallel to the noon sunlight at the equinoxes.
- Winter-solstice sunset: The entrance tunnel is aligned with the sunset on the winter solstice.
- Summer-solstice sunrise: The semi-outdoor theater points toward the sunrise over Zhifu Island on the summer solstice.
Together, these alignments make the building more than a sculpture beside the sea: its geometry gives visitors reference points for seasonal changes in the Sun’s path.

How does the plaza make the solar alignments visible?
The plaza extends the sundial concept beyond the tower. Elliptical rings and a water channel organize the space, while intersections in the plaza mark the building’s shadow at selected hours on the equinoxes. An outer ring includes fountains associated with the 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar.
These features connect a large architectural form to observations people can make at ground level: the shadow shifts through the day, and the calendar’s solar divisions provide a seasonal framework for understanding the Sun’s movement.

What can you see inside the Sun Tower?
The tower is designed as a public cultural destination, not only an observation structure. Its program includes a library and viewing point, an observation area, exhibition spaces and a theater on the ground floor. The semi-outdoor theater also serves as one of the building’s solar alignments, facing the summer-solstice sunrise over Zhifu Island.
How does the building use passive ventilation?
The reported ventilation strategy uses operable openings in both of the tower’s shells. Those openings work with the chimney effect: as hot air rises, it can move out through the building, helping drive air movement without relying solely on mechanical cooling. The available project description does not provide performance figures or quantify energy savings.
