Everything You Should Know About Fertilizing African Violets

African violets need modest feeding and can be harmed by excess fertilizer salts. Choose a complete water-soluble product, dilute carefully, keep mix moist before feeding, and flush periodically.

African violets need nutrients, but they are sensitive to excess fertilizer salts. For most home growers, a complete water-soluble fertilizer used conservatively is a sensible starting point: follow its label, never apply it to dry potting mix, and flush the mix periodically with plain water. There is no single feeding schedule supported by every extension source; frequency depends on the product, watering method, and how the plant responds.

What fertilizer should you use on African violets?

Choose a complete, water-soluble fertilizer with clear dilution directions. “Complete” means it supplies the primary nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—and may also include micronutrients. University of Florida IFAS lists 20-20-20 and 15-30-15 as examples, but those ratios do not establish one formula as best for every violet.

Compare the label’s nutrient list and directions, including the forms of nitrogen and whether micronutrients are included. Consider your water and watering method, too. Reverse-osmosis water can remove micronutrients, according to the African Violet Society of America (AVSA). Nutrient availability also varies with substrate pH and growing temperature, so a fertilizer ratio alone cannot resolve every growth problem.

Do not assume that a high-phosphorus fertilizer is necessary to make a violet bloom. Select a product labeled for the intended use and let the plant’s condition, rather than a ratio slogan, guide adjustments.

How much and how often should you fertilize?

Published guidance differs. UF/IFAS recommends dissolving fertilizer at one-fourth of the product’s label rate and using it with each watering. Minnesota Extension also describes mild feeding at each watering. By contrast, the University of Georgia reports that many hobbyists fertilize with 20-20-20 every four to six weeks. These are different practices, not a universal schedule that can be combined into one rule.

For a cautious start, follow your chosen product’s label and use a conservative dilution rather than increasing strength to compensate for slow growth. If you opt for frequent feeding, UF/IFAS’s quarter-strength recommendation is one published approach; if you prefer periodic feeding, UGA’s four-to-six-week interval reflects a common hobby practice. Account for your watering routine and watch the plant before changing the dose or interval.

Miracle-Gro Blooming Houseplant Food, 8 fl. oz.
  • Miracle-Gro Blooming Houseplant Food contains nutrients to promote more blooms (vs. unfed plants)
  • Liquid fertilizer feeds blooming houseplants instantly
  • Use plant food once a week during the spring and summer months
  • Apply fertilizer directly to soil or mix with water in watering can
  • Great for all blooming indoor plants, including African violets, anthuriums, amaryllis, peace lilies, and geraniums

UF/IFAS suggests trying a feeding change on one or two plants and watching their response for about ten days before treating the rest of a collection. Gradual fading of leaf color along with reduced growth and flowering can indicate a nutrient need, but appearance alone is not a diagnosis.

How to apply fertilizer without damaging roots

  1. Check the product label. Measure the concentrate and mix it at the intended dilution. Do not add extra fertilizer because a plant is growing slowly.
  2. Moisten dry potting mix first. Dissolved fertilizer should not go onto dry mix. If the mix is dry, give it a normal watering before feeding.
  3. Apply the solution and let excess drain. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes a cautious top-watering method: water the soil normally from above, apply the fertilizer solution from above, then discard what drains from the pot.
  4. Do not leave runoff beneath the pot. Empty the saucer or catch tray so the plant is not left standing in drained fertilizer solution.
  5. Flush periodically with plain water. Minnesota Extension recommends a monthly plain-water flush, while UF/IFAS advises periodic flushing to limit soluble-salt buildup. Let the water drain freely and discard it.

How to fertilize wick-watered violets

For wick watering, Minnesota Extension says diluted fertilizer can be supplied through the reservoir. Salts may accumulate in the potting mix over time, however, so periodically water from the top with plain water and allow the pot to drain. Empty the runoff rather than letting it sit beneath the pot.

Signs of too little or too much fertilizer

What you notice What it may indicate What to do
Gradual loss of leaf color together with reduced growth and flowering UF/IFAS says this pattern usually indicates a need for nutrients. Review your feeding and watering routine. If testing a fertilizer change, try it on one or two plants and observe for about ten days.
Tight centers or rusty new leaves Possible overfertilization, according to UF/IFAS. Reduce or pause feeding and flush the mix with plain water.
Yellow spots or yellowing edges Possible excess fertilizer or soluble-salt buildup, noted by AVSA and Minnesota Extension. Cut back on fertilizer and flush the potting mix with plain water.

These signs are clues, not proof. Light, watering, pH, temperature, and root health can also affect a violet’s appearance and its ability to take up nutrients. Check those conditions before assuming fertilizer is the only cause.

Newly potted plants and rooted cuttings

Wait until roots are established before fertilizing a newly potted violet. UF/IFAS’s commercial-production guidance says newly potted plants should not be fed until root growth is established, and UGA similarly advises against adding fertilizer when potting newly rooted cuttings.

Commercial growers may use measured fertilizer concentrations and electrical-conductivity monitoring to manage production. Those production practices are not household potting recipes; home growers should use the product label and the plant’s response instead.

Water source and potting-mix pH

UF/IFAS and Virginia Cooperative Extension give a slightly acidic substrate pH range of about 6.0–6.5 for African violets. UF/IFAS commercial guidance gives a range of 5.8–6.5. These are potting-medium ranges, not instructions to add pH-adjusting products without first identifying a problem.

Water can contribute nutrients or affect what remains available to the plant. AVSA notes that reverse-osmosis water can remove micronutrients; it also explains that pH and growing temperature influence nutrient availability. If a violet struggles despite a reasonable feeding routine, consider the water source and broader growing conditions rather than simply increasing fertilizer.
