Those are xTool specifications, not independent test results. Its base work area is substantially smaller than the 470 × 3000 mm figure quoted for use with an automatic conveyor feeder and additional rails, so the right fit depends on the size and type of projects you plan to make.
What the xTool S1 40W specifications say
xTool’s undated S1 User Guide lists these specifications for the 40W configuration. They are manufacturer-published figures, not independently verified measurements.

The official S1 product page lists the 40W and 20W S1 configurations separately and also lists a 2W IR laser module. They are distinct configurations: do not apply a 20W model’s specifications or assume the separately listed IR module is the 40W diode head.
How much room the work area gives you
The 40W machine’s listed base work area is 498 × 319 mm. That can suit projects that fit within the bed, but it is not the same as the extended 470 × 3000 mm figure on xTool’s materials. The longer figure applies when the automatic conveyor feeder is used with additional rails; it is not the ordinary bed size of the base machine.

For signs, panels, or repeated long workpieces, account for the feeder and rails as part of the setup. Confirm their compatibility and what is included in the specific package before buying. The guide lists the 40W and 20W models’ work areas separately, so check the exact variant rather than treating all S1 dimensions as interchangeable.
Materials and safety limits
xTool lists potential engraving applications that include wood, leather, MDF, paper, felt, fabric, bamboo, opaque acrylic, dark glass, ceramic, jade, marble, shale, cement, brick, and plated or painted metal. This broad manufacturer list is not a guarantee that every item in a material category is safe or suitable: composition, coatings, finish, and settings affect the result. Use the manufacturer’s current S1 support information and material guidance for the particular material and setup.

xTool’s safety notice, updated April 16, 2024, says not to cut or engrave PVC or vinyl and not to process unknown materials. It warns that PVC, vinyl, and materials containing chlorine or chloride can produce corrosive vapor that can harm people and damage the machine; melting or vaporizing some plastics can also release harmful smoke. An optional purifier does not make prohibited or unknown materials safe to process.
- Do not process PVC, vinyl, or material whose composition you cannot establish.
- Follow the current manual’s ventilation and material guidance for approved work.
- Do not leave the machine unattended while it is operating.
- Keep the work area clean; residue and chips can contribute to fire risk.
These are manufacturer safety instructions, not a substitute for evaluating ventilation and fire precautions in the actual workspace. The notice is available at S1 Safety First (Important).

xTool’s product and buying-guide pages describe optional accessories that expand the machine’s use or change the workspace. Availability, compatibility, and package contents can vary; check the exact accessory version and regional listing.
