For Richmond water heater troubleshooting, first identify the exact model and type from its rating plate, then follow that unit’s manual. Richmond sells storage-tank, tankless, and heat-pump heaters; their controls and troubleshooting steps differ, so a pilot-light procedure or error-code chart may not apply to your heater.
Identify your Richmond water heater before troubleshooting
Find the rating plate on the appliance and record the model number, fuel type, and whether it is a storage tank, tankless, or heat-pump unit. If the display shows an alarm or error code, write it down exactly. Use those details to locate the matching use-and-care manual; Richmond’s support materials do not provide one procedure that covers every product.
Richmond’s FAQ distinguishes its RTG tankless heaters from storage tanks, while the August 2024 Universal Connect heat-pump manual gives separate alarm guidance for that product. Match any instruction or code to the model and manual that actually apply.
Start with safe checks for no or insufficient hot water
Check whether the problem is local or throughout the home
- Test more than one hot-water fixture. If only one faucet or shower is affected, the issue may be at that fixture rather than the heater.
- Check whether the heater appears to have its required power or fuel supply, without opening panels or handling wiring or gas components.
- Look for a displayed error or alarm and consult the exact model’s manual for its meaning and permitted checks.
For T132 on the Universal Connect heat-pump model
In the cited Universal Connect manual, T132 means “Water Heater difficulty satisfying demand.” The manual directs users to check for open faucets and water leaks. If neither explains the demand, the unit may be improperly sized. This code and checklist are specific to that manual; do not apply them to another Richmond heater simply because it has a similar symptom.

- This is a Brand New Upgraded OEM Water Heater Gas Valve Thermostat
- Top Quality Upgraded OEM Replacement Part!
- Thermostat control
- The gas valve is a low voltage control (usually 24 VAC) that allow gas into the combustion chamber. It is also an adjustable regulator that insures proper gas pressure for combustion. They have a manual shut off.
Clean the filter only when your model’s manual calls for it
The Universal Connect heat-pump manual identifies T131 as a clean-filter reminder. For models covered by that manual, set the heater to Electric or OFF before removing the filter. Wash it with mild detergent, let it dry fully, reinstall it, then select the desired operating mode. Do not assume another Richmond model has the same filter or procedure; check its manual first.
Richmond tankless heaters do not use a standing pilot
Richmond says RTG-series tankless heaters ignite the main burner by direct spark when they detect hot-water flow; they have no standing pilot. If you own an RTG model, instructions to relight a pilot do not fit its ignition system.

Richmond’s FAQ says RTG temperature setpoints change in 2°F increments from 100°F through 120°F, and in 5°F increments from 120°F through 140°F. Those are RTG-series specifications, not a universal setting rule for Richmond heaters. Follow your model’s manual when adjusting temperature.
Know when troubleshooting should stop
Some faults need technical service rather than homeowner repair. In the Universal Connect manual, A200 is an ECO/high-temperature condition that calls for technical service; the manual also lists controller faults as service faults. Follow the service instructions for the exact displayed code.

Stop DIY diagnosis and use the manual’s service route or a qualified professional for recurring ignition trouble, suspected combustion or venting problems, water near electrical components, or a leak from the tank itself. If you smell gas or face another immediate hazard, do not try to diagnose or repair the heater; follow local emergency guidance and the instructions for your appliance.

A thermocouple is relevant only to compatible standing-pilot gas heaters. Rheem’s technical-bulletin index includes a thermocouple replacement bulletin for residential standing-pilot gas water heaters, but that does not establish that a generic thermocouple fits a particular Richmond model. Gas-appliance repair should be handled by someone qualified to service that unit.
