To keep cords together, match the tie to how often you expect to change the bundle: use a standard nylon zip tie for cables that will stay grouped, and a reusable hook-and-loop or releasable tie for cords you may need to add, remove, or rearrange.
How to use a standard zip tie for a fixed cable bundle
A cable tie—often called a zip tie—binds and organizes cables. It is a straightforward choice for a group of cords that is unlikely to change often. Choose a tie long enough to go around the bundle, then tighten it only enough to hold the cables together.
- Gather the cables you want to keep together and choose a tie that can comfortably wrap around them.
- Thread the tie around the bundle and fasten it, leaving the cords held together without cinching the tie excessively.
- If you later remove a standard tie, cut it carefully from the side, keeping the cutting tool away from the cables.
This is a practical cable-management use of a standard tie, not a claim that it is suitable for every cable or installation. If you expect to adjust the group, choose a reusable tie instead.
How to keep changing bundles reusable
For temporary arrangements or cords you expect to rearrange, use a reusable hook-and-loop tie or a tie with a release mechanism. These designs can be opened and closed again, so you can add or remove a cable without cutting the fastener. HellermannTyton says its TEXTIE hook-and-loop tie can be reused up to 400 times. That is a manufacturer claim about this product, not a general lifespan for reusable cable ties: TEXTIE product information.

Keep cable bundling separate from workplace tagout
OSHA’s 2016 interpretation addresses a specific electrical-work tagout situation: a plastic zip tie alone cannot replace a required warning tag that communicates hazardous conditions. That workplace rule is distinct from ordinary household or construction-site cable bundling; do not treat a cable tie as a substitute for required safety tags or procedures.
