Helen’s planned Patola heating plant in Helsinki is designed to feed heat into the city’s district-heating network—not to install a heat pump in each of 30,000 homes. The industrial air-to-water unit is rated to deliver 20–33 MW, depending on outdoor temperature. Its supplier, Everllence, estimates annual output of about 200 GWh, equivalent to heating around 30,000 households. Those are project estimates, not verified operating results.
What does “30,000 homes” mean?
Patola is a utility-scale heating project in Helsinki, Finland. Its heat pump is intended to produce hot water for Helsinki’s district-heating network, which distributes heat to connected buildings. The “30,000 households” figure is Everllence’s estimate of how many households the pump’s expected annual heat output could serve. It is not a count of homes receiving individual heat pumps.
Everllence lists approximately 200 GWh of annual heat and around 30,000 households in its Helsinki project reference. Helen’s 2024 announcement projected more than 200 GWh per year from the heat pump. Both are planning figures; the available project updates do not establish actual annual output.
How large is the Patola heat pump?
Helen announced the Patola complex on 19 June 2024. Its main heat pump is rated at 20–33 MW of district-heat production, with output varying according to outdoor air temperature. Helen says it can operate when outdoor temperatures fall to −20°C. The company described it as the first of its size in the world; Everllence calls it one of the world’s largest large-scale air-to-water heat pumps. Those are project-owner and supplier characterizations, not independent certification of a global record across all types of heat pumps.

The unit is part of a larger plant, not the plant’s only heating equipment. Helen’s announced design also includes two electric boilers, each rated at 50 MW. The heat pump and boilers are intended to contribute heat to the same district-heating system.
How does the system make heat?
The heat pump draws heat from ambient air and uses electricity to move that heat into water for the network. In the Patola design, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the refrigerant: it circulates inside the heat-pump system, rather than serving as the heat source. Everllence lists water up to 90°C as the heat sink—the receiving medium heated for use by the district-heating system.

Everllence estimates a coefficient of performance (COP) of about 3.0–3.5. COP compares heat delivered with electricity consumed under specified conditions; here it is a supplier estimate, not an independently verified result from Patola in operation. The source material does not provide measured site performance across different weather conditions.
What emissions savings are projected?
Helen’s June 2024 announcement forecast annual CO₂ reductions of 26,000 tonnes for the heat pump and 56,000 tonnes for the full Patola heating complex, including both electric boilers. Everllence also lists up to 26,000 tonnes of annual CO₂ savings for the pump. These are estimates, not measured reductions. The figures refer to different scopes—the pump alone versus the complex—so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

When is the plant expected to produce heat?
Helen’s 2026 climate transition plan gives the 2026–2027 heating season as the project’s completion target. In an update published on 25 May 2026, Energy Efficiency Agreements Finland reported that major equipment had been moved into place and installation of piping and equipment was under way. The update quoted Helen’s climate and energy-efficiency manager Rauno Tolonen as saying the company was targeting production in the following heating season.
These updates describe a project under installation and a target schedule; they do not confirm commissioning or commercial operation. Helen’s 2024 project announcement sets out the design and forecasts, while Valmet’s 2025 announcement describes its planned automation supply. Neither announcement establishes achieved operating output.
