How a wooden box hinge works
A common shopmade design uses interlocking knuckles—rounded fingers on the two hinge leaves—with a pin running through them. In Doug Stowe’s separate dovetailed-box example, the knuckles are cut using a box-joint jig and a 1/8-inch bronze or brass welding rod serves as the pin. Fit matters more than the mechanism suggests
Wooden hinges are a craft feature, not a direct durability substitute for metal hardware. Stowe cautions that they are fragile under stress. The hinge parts need to be positioned squarely and accurately so they swing freely: small machining errors or binding can put stress on the wood and contribute to failure. Test the motion and correct tight spots before final assembly rather than forcing a stiff hinge.

Leave room for solid wood movement
In Stowe’s example, the solid lid panel floats in grooves rather than being glued into them, allowing for seasonal expansion and contraction. This is a detail of that separate frame-and-panel box, not a confirmed feature of the WOOD plan; it illustrates why a wooden box lid should be designed so a solid panel can move where the construction requires it.
Three documented ways to make wooden hinges
The WOOD shared-jig concept is not the only route. These approaches differ in equipment and geometry, and the cited instructions do not provide controlled durability comparisons.

- Want the shared-jig approach? Confirm that your box-joint jig and setup suit the plan’s instructions. The summary establishes the shared-jig concept but not the full procedure.
- Considering a different hinge method? The scroll-saw and router-table instructions are alternatives, not interchangeable specifications for this box.
- Expect frequent or heavy use? A shopmade wooden hinge is more vulnerable to stress than a metal hinge, so consider whether the decorative mechanism suits the box’s use.
Further technique reference
Stowe’s two-part Fine Woodworking project is a separate dovetailed box, not a walkthrough of the WOOD greeting-card plan. Its construction notes include drilling a hinge-pin hole from both sides to reduce wandering, routing rounded hinge barrels, cutting interlocking fingers with a box-joint jig, checking clearance and fixing hinges in mortises with polyurethane glue. Part 1 also lists hand-tool work for dovetails; Part 2 covers the frame-and-panel base and lid. These details can help explain one way to build a wooden-hinged box, but they should not be treated as the WOOD plan’s parts list or required assembly sequence.
