A butterfly house works best as one small part of a habitat that also provides the right caterpillar host plants, nectar flowers, shelter, and water. Plan those elements for local butterflies first; then add a wooden shelter as an optional feature.
Plan a butterfly habitat, not just a box
Adult butterflies need nectar, while caterpillars need particular host plants to eat. Flowers alone may bring adult visitors without supporting the next generation. UF/IFAS Extension includes nectar sources, larval host plants, shelter, and water among the components of a butterfly garden: UF/IFAS butterfly garden guidance.

Before building, look at the available space and note its sun, wind exposure, existing shrubs or trees, and soil. NC State Extension recommends planning around sun, shelter, host plants, and nectar plants: NC State butterfly garden planning.

Identify the butterflies you hope to support and select host plants appropriate to those species and your region. Add nectar plants that flower at different times so food is available across more of the growing season. Favor locally native plants where suitable, and use local extension or native-plant lists to confirm choices; plant suitability varies with region and growing conditions. University of Maryland Extension discusses native plants and butterflies in its butterfly gardening guidance.

Make room for shelter and water
Retain or establish suitable sheltered areas, such as shrubs or other vegetation, and consider a water source as part of the garden plan. A wooden butterfly house is optional: the cited habitat guidance identifies shelter as one need, but does not establish that a single box design attracts or benefits every butterfly species.
Build one documented wooden butterfly house
The following dimensions come from the Woodland Trust’s construction guide, dated 12 July 2019. They describe that guide’s design, not a universal standard: Woodland Trust: How to make a butterfly house.

The guide specifies six pieces of untreated wood, each up to about 20 mm thick. Follow its assembly illustrations for how the pieces fit together; the cited specifications do not state fastening hardware, a preferred orientation, a finish, or a maintenance schedule.
- Measure and prepare the six untreated-wood pieces to the dimensions in the table, including the sloped sides.
- Assemble the pieces according to the Woodland Trust guide’s illustrated design.
- Sand rough edges before placing the finished house.
- Position it near nectar-rich flowers. The guide’s example is around four to six feet above ground.
Compare habitat plans by what they provide
There are no comparative trials in the cited sources establishing that one butterfly-house design performs better than another. When deciding how much to build or plant, compare the habitat plan on practical criteria:

Caterpillars feed on plants, so some leaf damage is part of providing larval food. Illinois Extension advises limiting insecticide use in a butterfly habitat: Illinois Extension on creating butterfly habitat. Avoid treating the wooden house as a substitute for host plants, nectar, or appropriate garden conditions.
