Window Mullions vs. Muntins: What’s the Difference?

A mullion separates adjacent window units; a muntin subdivides the glass within one sash. Here is how to identify each and avoid confusion with modern window grids.

A mullion separates adjacent window units or major glazed panels, while a muntin subdivides the glass within a single sash into separate panes, or “lights.” That is the most useful distinction: mullions divide window units; muntins divide lights within a sash.

The terms are often confused because modern windows may use decorative grids that look like traditional muntins but do not physically separate individual panes. If you are ordering windows, planning a repair, or working on a historic property, identifying the construction—not just the appearance—is important.

Quick comparison

Feature Mullion Muntin
What it divides Adjacent window units or larger glazed panels Individual panes, or lights, within one sash or glazed field
Typical position in the assembly Primary framing between complete windows or major sections Smaller framing within a sash
Typical appearance Usually broader and more substantial Usually narrower and repeated in a grid pattern
Common purpose Joins or separates units in a multi-window assembly Separates individual panes in a divided-light sash, or imitates that appearance
Best identification question “Does this member separate two complete windows or major panels?” “Does this member subdivide the glass within one sash?”

Size is a useful visual clue, but it is not the definition. A large-looking grid bar is not automatically a mullion, and a narrow visible bar is not necessarily a true muntin.

What is a window mullion?

A mullion is a primary framing member that separates adjacent window units or major glazed sections within an opening. For example, a wide opening might contain two casement windows, a fixed window beside an operable window, or several joined units. The framing member between those complete units is generally called a mullion.

In a properly designed multi-unit assembly, the mullion may help connect the units and transfer loads through the assembly. However, the word alone does not establish exactly how much structural work the member performs. Product design, reinforcement, attachment method, wall conditions, and the manufacturer’s terminology all matter.

Do not assume that every mullion is vertical. Many windows use a vertical divider between side-by-side units, but technical terminology can also describe a horizontal primary divider. In some systems, the horizontal member between major window sections is more specifically called a transom. The safest distinction is therefore based on location and scale—between complete units versus within one sash—not simply on direction.

What is a window muntin?

A muntin is a smaller framing member that subdivides a sash or glazed field into individual panes, traditionally called lights or lites. In a traditional divided-light window, each muntin physically separates neighboring pieces of glass.

For example, a single sash arranged as two columns by three rows has six individual lights. The narrow members between those lights are muntins. The outer frame of the sash is not a muntin, and a substantial divider between two separate window units is generally not one either.

True muntins are not merely decorative. In a traditional true-divided-light sash, they hold or separate the individual panes and form part of the sash’s glazing construction. Modern products, however, often use a single insulated-glass unit with a decorative grid applied to it. That produces a similar appearance without using muntins in the traditional construction sense.

Related window terms

Sash
The part of a window that holds the glazing. A sash may be fixed or operable.
Light or lite
An individual pane or compartment of glass within a sash.
Transom
Often the horizontal intermediate framing member between major sections of a window or door assembly. Usage varies by system.
Grille or grid
A broad consumer and retail term for a window pattern. It may refer to true divided lights, simulated divided lights, or a grid placed between panes.

Because “grille” and “grid” are broad terms, they do not tell you how the window is constructed. A quotation that says “six-over-six grid” may describe the visual pattern without saying whether the product has six separate panes, applied bars, or bars enclosed between panes.

True divided lite, simulated divided lite, and grids between glass

The most important modern complication is that several different constructions can look like a traditional muntin pattern.

True divided lite (TDL)

In a true divided-lite window, muntins physically separate individual panes of glass. Each light is a separate piece of glass, and the muntins are part of the sash’s actual glazing construction.

TDL construction can be important when matching an older or historically significant window. The depth, width, profile, and shadow lines of the muntins may be visible from both inside and outside. It can also involve more individual glazing components than a single insulated-glass unit.

Simulated divided lite (SDL)

A simulated divided-lite window is made from a larger insulated-glass unit but designed to resemble separate panes. Depending on the product, permanently attached muntin-like bars may be placed on the interior and exterior faces of the glass, with spacer bars between the panes.

SDL can provide a convincing divided-light appearance while using modern insulated glazing. The exact profile, attachment method, and available patterns vary by manufacturer, so “SDL” should be treated as a product specification rather than a universal construction detail.

Grilles between glass (GBG)

With grilles between glass, the decorative grid is positioned inside the insulating-glass unit, between the panes. The glass may appear divided from a distance, but the grid does not physically separate the glass into individual lights.

Some preservation and technical glossaries reserve the word muntin for a member that actually divides panes. In ordinary retail conversation, however, a salesperson or homeowner may call any visible grid a muntin or grille. Both the appearance and the terminology can therefore vary.

How to identify the part on an actual window

Use this sequence before ordering a replacement, describing a defect, or asking a contractor to modify an opening:

  1. Look at the boundaries. Does the member separate two complete window units, such as two side-by-side casements or a fixed unit beside an operable one? Start with mullion.
  2. Look inside the sash. Does the member create smaller glass compartments within one sash? Start with muntin.
  3. Check whether the glass is continuous. If you can see one continuous insulated-glass unit behind the grid, the product may be SDL or GBG rather than a traditional true-divided-light sash.
  4. Check horizontal members carefully. A horizontal divider between major window sections may be a transom or may be described as a horizontal mullion, depending on the window system.
  5. Do not infer structural performance from a photograph. A mullion is commonly associated with primary framing, but its actual load path, reinforcement, and attachment cannot be confirmed from appearance alone.

Why the distinction matters when ordering or modifying windows

The phrase “add mullions” can describe several completely different projects. A homeowner may mean:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • joining separate windows into one mulled assembly;
  • adding a divided-light pattern to one sash;
  • selecting simulated divided lite instead of true divided lite; or
  • replacing a damaged removable grille.

These are not interchangeable operations. Mulling separate window units can require product-specific joining components, reinforcement, sealants, flashing details, and installation procedures. Depending on the product, the assembly may be factory-mulled or field-mulled. Improper assembly can contribute to air infiltration, water penetration, movement, or product failure.

For that reason, do not treat mulling as simply adding a strip of trim between two windows. Give the window manufacturer or dealer the exact product line, unit sizes, operating types, wall condition, and intended configuration. A qualified installer should confirm whether the units are approved to be combined and which mulling method applies.

Likewise, muntin, grille, and grid components are not universal replacement parts. A broken bar, clip, or grille may depend on the manufacturer, window series, glass thickness, insulating-glass construction, dimensions, profile, and attachment system. Before ordering, photograph the part and record the manufacturer, product line, approximate age, sash dimensions, and whether the grid is on the surface, between the panes, or part of separate glazing.

Do mullions or muntins affect energy efficiency?

There is no reliable rule that a window is energy-efficient or inefficient simply because it has mullions or muntins. Whole-window performance depends on the complete product, including the frame material, glazing layers, coatings, gas fill, spacers, seals, operating type, size, and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A divided-light appearance may affect the product’s configuration, but the vocabulary does not provide a performance ranking. When comparing replacement windows, review the exact unit’s ratings rather than comparing the words “mullion,” “muntin,” “grille,” or “grid.”

Important information may include:

  • U-factor: a measure used to compare heat flow through the complete window; lower values generally indicate less heat transfer.
  • Solar heat-gain coefficient (SHGC): the fraction of solar radiation admitted through the window; the appropriate value depends on climate, orientation, shading, and design goals.
  • Visible transmittance (VT): the amount of visible light transmitted.
  • Air leakage: reported for some products and configurations.
  • Operating type and exact size: these can affect the rated result.

Use the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label or the manufacturer’s documentation for the complete, rated window. Do not assume that a traditional-looking grille, a replacement mullion, or a particular muntin pattern determines the energy result by itself.

Historic windows and preservation work

For historic properties, the difference is more than a vocabulary exercise. Muntins, mullions, transoms, sash, profiles, and glazing patterns contribute to the character of the building. A replacement that has the same broad grid pattern can still look wrong if its muntins are too wide, too flat, too shallow, or incorrectly placed.

Before requesting proposals, photograph and measure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the overall opening and sash dimensions;
  • the number and arrangement of lights;
  • muntin width, depth, and profile;
  • the sash and frame material;
  • the location of any mullions or transoms;
  • the glazing type and visible shadow lines; and
  • any unusual joinery, hardware, or meeting-rail details.

Describe the existing construction accurately: for example, “six-over-six true divided-light wood sash” is more useful than simply “window with muntins.” If the window uses an applied grid or grilles between glass, say so.

Historic-district requirements are specific to the jurisdiction, district, property, and proposed work. Check with the relevant local preservation office before ordering replacement windows. National preservation guidance can help explain what details should be documented, but it does not replace a local review, approval, or condition assessment. In some cases, repair or sash rehabilitation may be more appropriate than replacement.

Terminology varies by region and industry

Window vocabulary is not perfectly uniform. Different manufacturers, trades, regions, and technical glossaries may use adjacent terms differently. In UK-oriented terminology, glazing bar is commonly used where a US reader might say muntin. Some companies also use “grid” or “grille” for several different constructions.

That variation is why a drawing, estimate, or preservation submission should not rely on a single word. Include a photograph or elevation, the number of lights, a cross-section or profile when relevant, and a description of whether the bars separate individual panes, sit on the glass, or are enclosed between panes.

Practical wording for a window quote

Instead of writing “replace the muntins,” provide enough information to identify the intended work:

“Replace the damaged exterior applied grid on the second-floor, six-over-six simulated-divided-lite sash. Match the existing profile, color, spacing, and attachment method. Verify the window manufacturer and glass system before ordering.”

Or, for a multi-unit installation:

“Provide two manufacturer-approved window units joined as a mulled assembly, with the required factory or field mull kit, structural support, flashing, and installation details for this wall condition.”

That wording makes clear whether the job concerns a decorative grid, a true divided-light component, or the connection between complete window units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are mullions always vertical and muntins always horizontal?

No. Direction is not the dependable distinction. Mullions generally separate adjacent window units or major panels, while muntins subdivide the glass within a sash. A horizontal primary divider may be called a transom, a horizontal mullion, or another system-specific term.

Is every grid on a window a muntin?

No. A true muntin separates individual panes in a divided-light sash. A modern window may instead use simulated divided-lite bars attached to the glass or a grille positioned between panes.

Can I replace a damaged muntin or grille with a universal part?

Usually you should not assume that. Profiles, clips, dimensions, glass systems, and attachment methods vary by manufacturer and product line. Identify the window maker, series, glass construction, and part dimensions before ordering.

Do muntins make a window less energy-efficient?

The presence of muntins does not establish the window’s energy performance. Compare the complete rated window, including its U-factor, solar heat-gain coefficient, glazing, frame, spacers, seals, operating type, and exact configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I call the divider between two side-by-side windows?

In most US construction and window contexts, start with “mullion.” Confirm the manufacturer’s terminology and describe the assembly in writing, especially if the divider is structural or the units are being joined.

The Bottom Line

Remember: a mullion separates complete window units or major panels; a muntin separates individual lights within a sash. Because modern grilles can imitate traditional muntins, identify whether the glass is truly divided, simulated, or separated by a grille between panes. For repairs, replacement windows, mulling, or historic work, use photographs, measurements, profiles, and the exact product specifications—not terminology alone.
