A 2-liter bottle can make an effective localized yellowjacket trap: cut off the top, invert it into the base as a funnel, add bait, and place it away from people. It is useful for nuisance foragers—not for eliminating a nest or solving every “wasp” problem.

First: make sure a trap is the right response

People often call any black-and-yellow flying insect a “wasp,” but this type of baited trap is chiefly intended for nuisance yellowjackets. Yellowjackets can be useful predators and scavengers. If only a few are visiting, the safer and more effective first move is usually to remove food and drink attractants rather than begin trapping.

Do not use a DIY trap as nest control. A trap catches individual foragers; it does not locate, identify, or destroy the colony. Keep clear of any suspected nest, especially one in a wall, attic, soffit, ground void, doorway, walkway, or other high-traffic spot.

Materials

  • One clean, empty 2-liter plastic bottle
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • Tape, staples, clips, or string to hold the assembly together
  • Bait selected for the setting
  • Optional: a small amount of water with a drop of dish soap in the bottom section
  • Optional: string or wire for hanging the trap

Use care when cutting the bottle. Make the cut on a stable surface, direct the blade away from your body, and keep the project away from children.

Build the bottle-funnel trap

  1. Remove the top third of the bottle. Cut across the bottle below the shoulder, leaving a deeper lower section to hold bait.
  2. Add the bait. Put it in the bottom section. If using soapy water, keep the bait in a small shallow receptacle above it where practical so the liquid remains below the funnel opening.
  3. Make the funnel. Take the cut-off top, remove the cap, turn the top upside down, and set it inside the lower section. The bottle neck should point downward into the bottle.
  4. Secure the pieces. Tape, staple, clip, or tie the rim so wind and handling cannot separate the funnel from the base. Avoid closing the entry opening with tape.
  5. Hang or set it upright. If hanging, make small holes near the upper rim and use string or wire. Ensure the trap stays level and cannot spill onto people, pets, or food areas.

The inverted top creates a one-way funnel: insects drawn inside can find the entrance but may have difficulty finding their way back out.

Choose bait carefully—especially around bees

There is no universally bee-safe homemade bait. Sugar-based attractants can also attract honey bees and other non-target insects. Choose the bait based on the problem you are trying to solve, then check the trap often.

Setting Reasonable bait approach Important trade-off
General yard or patio Fermenting fruit or beer Simple and commonly used, but it can attract non-target insects, including bees.
Where honey bees are present or bee protection is a priority A commercial yellowjacket attractant containing heptyl butyrate is the most bee-conscious option. If using a homemade non-sugary alternative, use meat, pet food, or fish. Meat and fish spoil quickly and can lose effectiveness within hours. They need frequent replacement and careful handling.

Do not add borax, boric acid, insecticide, or another pesticide to homemade bait. If a pesticide product is ever used, it must be registered for that use and followed exactly according to its label; using it contrary to label directions is illegal.

Place it where it pulls yellowjackets away from activity

Never set the trap beside a dining table, door, pool entrance, play area, or active work zone. A trap attracts insects before it catches them, so poor placement can make the immediate area worse.

  • Patios and general yards: place the trap away from people and food. A practical general-yard position is about 4 to 5 feet above the ground, where it can be checked safely.
  • Near honey-bee colonies: place traps low to the ground and at least 20 feet from hives. Choose a serviceable location that does not require walking near a possible yellowjacket nest.

These are different use cases, not conflicting rules: the first is for pulling nuisance foragers away from a lived-in outdoor area; the second is specialized guidance for apiary protection.

Maintain and remove the trap safely

  • Inspect it from a distance before handling it. Do not approach if yellowjackets are clustering around a nearby crack, wall void, soil opening, or other suspected nest entrance.
  • Replace spoiled protein bait frequently; its usefulness can fade within hours in warm conditions.
  • Refresh other bait as needed and empty rainwater before it dilutes or overflows.
  • Wear long sleeves and gloves when servicing if you can do so without getting close to a nest.
  • When insects are no longer active, seal the bottle in a bag before disposal. Do not squeeze or open a trap full of live yellowjackets.

Set expectations: trapping is local relief, not population control

A bottle trap may catch many yellowjackets around a particular location, but casual trapping usually does not reduce the overall population enough to solve a broad yard problem. It does not eliminate an established nest. If catches are high or yellowjackets keep returning from the same direction, look for an attractant problem or a nearby nest rather than simply adding traps.

Reduce what draws yellowjackets in

Prevention matters as much as the trap. Yellowjackets seek both protein and carbohydrate sources and can become especially noticeable around human food later in the season.

When to stop DIY and call a professional

Do not attempt nest treatment if you have a sting allergy. Arrange professional pest management for a hidden nest, a nest inside a structure, or any nest near a door, path, play space, or other frequently used area. Yellowjackets can defend nests aggressively, and unsuccessful treatment attempts can result in multiple stings.

Sting safety

For a routine sting, wash the area with soap and water and apply wrapped ice to help limit swelling. Keep someone with the affected person to watch for a reaction.

Call emergency services immediately after a sting for trouble breathing, wheezing or shortness of breath, swelling of the face or mouth, throat tightness or trouble swallowing, marked weakness, or blue coloration. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction.

A reusable alternative

If you want a sturdier, easier-to-service setup, use a purpose-made reusable yellowjacket trap with a compatible attractant refill. It does not change the core limitations: position it away from people, avoid sugary attractants where bees are a concern, and do not treat the trap as a substitute for professional nest management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a DIY wasp trap get rid of a yellowjacket nest?

No. It catches some foraging yellowjackets near the trap but does not eliminate the nest or reliably reduce the wider local population.

Is a homemade yellowjacket trap safe for bees?

No. Fermenting fruit, juice, soda, and other sugary baits can attract honey bees. Where bee protection matters, avoid sugary bait; a commercial heptyl-butyrate yellowjacket attractant is the more targeted option.

How far away should I put a yellowjacket trap?

For a general patio or yard, place it away from people and food, roughly 4 to 5 feet above ground. For honey-bee protection, keep traps low and at least 20 feet from hives.
