Construction affects both Wichita streets and state highways, including major work on East Kellogg and the I-135/U.S. 54 interchange. For trip planning, check KDOT’s Wichita Metro Updates and the City of Wichita’s street-closure map before you leave. The latest located KDOT metro update is dated September 14, 2026; closure details below are tied to that update, not a verified October 7, 2026, same-day list.
Where to check Wichita-area road closures
Use both state and city resources: KDOT covers state highways and the City of Wichita reports municipal street work. A single project page may not cover every road on your route.
- State highways: Review KDOT’s Wichita Metro Updates for posted metro restrictions. Its latest located update was last updated September 14, 2026, and lists work on East Kellogg, the I-135/U.S. 54 interchange, and North Junction Gold Phase 2B. Check the page again for newer changes before traveling.
- City streets: Use the City of Wichita’s interactive street-closure map and its weekly construction and maintenance bulletins. The located bulletin covers May 29–June 5, 2026, so it is not a current October closure list.
- Downtown: The Downtown Wichita traffic page also links to city closure resources.
The City warns that closure locations and durations can vary and that schedules are tentative. Treat dates and restrictions as subject to change, and verify the live map or update close to departure.

U.S. 54/East Kellogg expansion
KDOT says construction on the U.S. 54/East Kellogg Expansion Project from K-96 to 159th Street began March 23, 2026. The announced project cost is $287.97 million. Its scope is to reconstruct U.S. 54 as a six-lane corridor, improve K-96, replace 26 bridges, build 32 retaining walls, and construct two-lane frontage roads intended to maintain access to local businesses. KDOT names Dondlinger Wildcat EKC1 LLC as the primary contractor. See KDOT’s East Kellogg project information.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning a trip around construction
- Identify whether your route uses a state highway, a city street, or both.
- Check KDOT’s Wichita metro update for highway restrictions and the City’s closure map for street work.
- For downtown travel, consult the Downtown Wichita traffic page as an additional route to city closure resources.
- Recheck near departure. City schedules are tentative, and construction traffic control can shift.
The available updates establish major projects and restrictions, but they do not provide a verified, complete closure list for October 7, 2026. They also do not establish a measured increase in Wichita-area traffic; the documented issue here is active construction and its traffic controls.
