Ian Schmoyer says returning to college, earning a finance degree at Florida Gulf Coast University and support from FGCU faculty helped redirect his path toward homebuilding. He later started a construction company focused on concrete and framing, then founded Christopher Alan Homes in 2017. His story, as told in an FGCU alumni profile, centers on persistence, mentorship and the culture he wanted to build alongside homes.

Returning to college and finding direction at FGCU

Schmoyer initially left college, but later decided he needed to complete a degree. He enrolled in FGCU’s finance program and graduated in 2004. In a profile by Bill Studenc for FGCU 360, Schmoyer described the decision this way: “I knew ultimately I needed to finish school and get a degree, so I enrolled at FGCU in the finance program.”

He credits faculty members Shelton Weeks, Bradley Hobbs and Howard Finch with helping him get on track. Weeks, Lucas Professor of Real Estate and director of FGCU’s Lucas Institute for Real Estate Development & Finance, recalled Schmoyer’s academic turnaround and his willingness to speak with students: “That is why I love it when Ian stands in my classroom and tells students about his academic journey and how he went from being one of our worst students to one of our best.”

From construction work to founding a homebuilder

After college, Schmoyer’s first business venture was a construction company focused on concrete and framing. He later founded Christopher Alan Homes in 2017. The FGCU profile identifies him as the company’s founder, president and CEO.

Schmoyer says he wanted the business to stand for more than its houses: “I wanted to build more than just homes. I wanted to build a company that had a strong culture, a commitment to its homeowners and a reputation for doing the right thing, with strong integrity and values.” He has also described strong relationships with trade partners as part of that aim. These are his stated priorities, not independently measured findings about customer outcomes or company performance.

Why the company has its name

Schmoyer offered a light explanation for the name Christopher Alan Homes: “I don’t know if ‘Ian Schmoyer Homes’ has a great ring to it.”

Recognition and connection with FGCU students

FGCU reported that its Alumni Association presented Schmoyer with the 2026 Alumni Business of the Year Award. The university’s profile also reports that Builder Magazine recognized him as a “2026 Builder on the Rise.” Those honors are reported by FGCU; the profile does not provide independent performance measures for the company.

Schmoyer’s visits to Weeks’s classroom carry his career story back to students: a departure from college, a decision to finish, and faculty support that helped him find direction. In that account, education is not presented as a guarantee of success, but as a turning point that became useful alongside hands-on construction experience, persistence and the principles he says he wanted his company to follow.
