Why Your Water Heater Alarm Is Going Off: Safe Troubleshooting Guide

A water heater alarm may come from the heater, a leak sensor, or a separate gas or CO detector. Identify the source first, then follow the safe next step.

A “water heater alarm” could be a beep or code from the heater, a leak sensor, or a separate gas or carbon-monoxide (CO) detector. Identify which device is sounding before troubleshooting: a CO alarm can signal an immediate danger, while a heater code needs to be interpreted using the manual for that exact make and model.

First identify which device is sounding

Look for the sound’s source and any words, lights, or code on the device. Do not assume a nearby alarm is part of the water heater. The response depends on whether the signal comes from the heater’s controls, a leak sensor, or an independent gas or CO alarm.

  • Heater beep, flashing light, or code: Record the manufacturer, model, fuel type, exact code, and light or beep pattern. Error-code meanings vary by model.
  • Leak-sensor alert or water near the heater: Check from a safe position for visible water or damage. Persistent water, corrosion, or water near gas components calls for professional inspection.
  • Separate CO alarm: Treat it as a possible exposure. Leave for fresh air and follow the detector’s emergency instructions; do not stay inside to investigate the heater.
  • Gas alarm or gas odor: Stop using the appliance and contact the local gas utility or emergency provider from a safe location.

What a heater beep, light, or error code may mean

A heater’s controls may signal an ignition problem, a safety limit trip, or another fault. The sound alone does not identify the cause. Find the exact code in the owner’s manual for your heater, rather than relying on a code list for another brand.

Codes are specific to the model

For example, Bosch lists EA for failed ignition attempts, EC for combustion lost after ignition, A2 for flue-limiter or fuse activation, and E9 for an overheat limiter trip in its own gas tankless range. Bosch associates E9 commonly with lime scale in the heat-exchanger water passages. These meanings are Bosch examples, not universal water-heater codes. Bosch’s gas-tankless FAQ says gas-fired equipment should be serviced only by qualified professionals.

Possible causes on gas-fired heaters

Depending on the appliance and its code, possible causes include failed ignition or flame loss, inadequate gas pressure, restricted combustion air or venting, mineral scale, and sensor or wiring faults. Bosch’s troubleshooting information for listed models includes venting and combustion-air issues, scale-related flow restriction and overheating, and inadequate gas pressure; it directs pressure measurement to a licensed gas technician. Use Bosch’s troubleshooting guidance only for applicable Bosch models; it is not a general DIY procedure.

When a separate CO alarm sounds

Do not treat a sounding CO alarm as a routine heater fault. First Alert/BRK warns that its activation indicates carbon monoxide, which can be fatal, and directs occupants to move to fresh air and seek emergency response. Follow the instructions for your specific detector. If it sounds again after you have responded, repeat the emergency response and arrange inspection of fuel-burning appliances by a qualified technician. First Alert/BRK’s CO alarm response guidance lists a corroded or disconnected water-heater vent pipe, a leaking chimney or flue, a cracked heat exchanger, and a blocked chimney opening among possible household CO sources.

  • Floats During Flooding: In the event of a flood, the detector is designed to float on top of the water and continue signaling for up to 72 hours, making it helpful for basements, laundry rooms, utility spaces and other areas where water can collect
  • No Wiring or Setup Needed: Fully automatic water detector is simple to use; install one 9V alkaline battery, not included, then place it on its back with the metal contacts touching the surface near appliances, plumbing, water tanks or leak-prone locations
  • 1 Pack for Home Coverage: Includes three Leak Alert detectors so you can monitor multiple spaces at once, from under sinks and near toilets to basements, laundry rooms, utility closets, water heaters and appliance areas

CO is odorless and invisible, and it may dissipate before an investigator arrives. A stopped alarm or the absence of an unusual smell does not establish that the home is safe.

Gas alarms, poor ignition, or a heater that shuts off

Poor ignition, an unexpected safety shutoff, or other signs of poor combustion need attention rather than repeated restart attempts. Rinnai says possible poor-ignition causes include dust or cobwebs blocking intake or exhaust ports, low batteries in applicable units, or aging parts. Its guidance is for relevant Rinnai appliances; consult your own manual and local gas utility for instructions applicable to your installation.

Flood Buzz Water Heater Leak Detector - 1-Pack
  • UNDER $20 TO PROTECT AGAINST ONE OF THE COSTLIEST HOME LEAKS: Water heater failures are among the most common causes of residential water damage. Early detection gives you time to replace the heater before water reaches flooring or adjacent walls. Flood Buzz Blue owners report catching failures early enough to avoid major repair bills - small alarm, large save.
  • LOUD ENOUGH TO HEAR FROM UPSTAIRS: Up to 110 dB alarm triggers the instant water contacts the two-prong sensor. One small alarm placed in your water heater drain pan alerts the whole household the moment a leak starts, day or night.
  • BATTERY STAYS LIVE UNTIL THE DATE STAMPED ON THE UNIT: The battery is factory-installed and sealed at the factory - no batteries to buy, insert, or check. Every unit arrives with a replace-by date stamped on the housing, typically 2 or more years from when you receive it. The alarm stays ready until that date.
  • CONTACT SENSOR WITH NO MOVING PARTS: Two metal prongs on the base detect water the instant it bridges the circuit. No calibration, no adjustable sensitivity, nothing mechanical to fail. The sealed battery compartment protects the electronics from moisture, keeping the alarm ready for multi-year, always-on monitoring.
  • NO WIRES, NO APP, NO INSTALLATION: The factory-installed 12V battery means the unit is ready the moment you open the box. Place it flat in your water heater drain pan and monitoring begins immediately. No tools, no connectivity, no programming. Set it and forget it.

Rinnai advises stopping use and arranging inspection when poor-ignition signs occur, and warns that using an appliance without adequate ventilation can result in CO poisoning. See Rinnai’s appliance guidance. KEPCO’s gas-safety material likewise warns about inadequate ventilation and advises against continued use after a safety shutoff activates. Its device guidance is specific to the Japanese market and should not be treated as a universal rule for alarms or replacement intervals. Read KEPCO’s gas and CO safety guidance.

What a leak alarm or water under the heater may indicate

Water near a heater can have more than one explanation. Whirlpool says condensation may form when a new gas heater fills with cold water and heats; drips or a small puddle may occur and should stop once normal operating temperature is reached. Its guidance concerns its Energy Smart gas heaters, so do not assume condensation explains continuing water on a different appliance. Whirlpool also notes that leaks on new units often involve hot- or cold-water inlet connections or fittings. See Whirlpool’s water-heater leak guidance.

Do not dismiss continuing water, visible equipment damage or discoloration, corrosion, or water near gas components as harmless condensation. Rinnai describes a case in which water leaking from an internal component corroded gas components and caused a gas leak. Have a qualified technician inspect suspected damage, leaking venting, or water close to gas components. Rinnai’s safety guidance also identifies water leakage and damaged or discolored equipment as warning signs.

Safe steps to take when the alarm goes off

  1. Identify the device. Check whether the signal comes from the heater, a leak sensor, or an independent gas or CO alarm. If a CO alarm is sounding, leave for fresh air and follow its emergency instructions; do not troubleshoot indoors.
  2. Note what you can see from a safe location. Record the heater’s make and model, fuel type, displayed code or light pattern, and any visible water or damage. Do not remove a cover to get this information.
  3. Consult the exact owner’s manual. Match the code and procedure to the appliance model. A reset may clear a display, but it does not prove the underlying cause is fixed; a recurring alarm needs diagnosis.
  4. Stop using the heater when there are safety warning signs. These include abnormal ignition, an activated combustion safety shutoff, visible vent damage, a gas odor, or a recurring fault. For a suspected gas leak, contact your local gas utility or emergency provider from a safe location. For a recurring code, leak, or equipment concern, arrange qualified service.
  5. Leave internal work to qualified professionals. Do not test gas pressure, adjust combustion, repeatedly reignite a gas heater after abnormal ignition, or bypass a sensor or safety circuit. Do not open a gas-fired heater unless the exact manufacturer procedure assigns the work to a qualified technician.
