If your Bose soundbar is showing PCM, stereo, or Dolby Digital instead of Dolby Atmos, the signal is usually being changed or lost before it reaches the soundbar. Start by checking the incoming format in the Bose Music app, then trace the connection from the title and source device through the TV to the soundbar. A spacious sound alone does not prove that native Atmos is playing.
First, confirm your Bose soundbar supports Dolby Atmos
Bose identifies the Smart Ultra Soundbar, Smart Soundbar 900, and Smart Soundbar 600 as Dolby Atmos-capable models. Other Bose soundbars and TV speakers may not support Atmos; a software update cannot add Atmos support to a model that lacks it. Check the exact model name in the Bose app, on the product label, or in its owner’s guide. Bose model details are available for the Smart Ultra, Smart Soundbar 900, and Smart Soundbar 600.

Check the audio format the soundbar is receiving
- Open the Bose Music app and select your soundbar.
- Open the current playback or “Now Playing” screen.
- Select the TV or source information area, such as “Playing From TV,” and check the displayed digital audio format while the program is playing.
The exact app screen can vary by model. Bose provides instructions for the Smart Soundbar 900 and Smart Ultra.
- Dolby Atmos: The soundbar is receiving an Atmos signal. How prominent the height effect sounds can still depend on the mix, room, speaker placement, and listening position.
- Dolby Digital Plus: The soundbar is receiving compressed surround audio. It could be a non-Atmos track, or the TV or source may have passed Dolby Digital Plus while losing Atmos information.
- PCM: The TV or source may be decoding the audio before sending it. Depending on that device’s settings and capabilities, the result may lack Atmos metadata.
- Stereo or two-channel PCM: Native Atmos is not reaching the soundbar.
- No format information: Try another TV source and confirm the app is connected to the soundbar before treating the issue as a hardware fault.
Use the displayed format, not the perceived spaciousness of the sound, as the diagnostic. Bose TrueSpace can create an immersive, height-like effect from stereo or 5.1 material, but that processing is not the same as receiving a native Dolby Atmos signal. See Bose’s explanation of Smart Ultra features and TrueSpace.

- SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
Connect HDMI to the TV’s ARC or eARC port
For TV audio, connect the soundbar’s HDMI eARC port to the TV port specifically labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. A regular HDMI input generally does not return TV audio to a soundbar. Bose’s owner’s guide distinguishes the ARC/eARC connection from ordinary HDMI ports.
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and reconnect it firmly between the Bose soundbar’s HDMI eARC port and the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Check that it is not plugged into an ordinary TV HDMI input. If you have a cable supplied with the Bose soundbar, try it first.
- Turn on the TV, then the soundbar, and test a title known to have an Atmos track.
A cable swap is worth trying if the connection is loose, visibly damaged, or intermittent. The correct port and compatible signal path matter more than a premium cable label; replacing a cable cannot make an unsupported TV pass Atmos.
Know when ARC is enough—and when eARC is needed
“Atmos over ARC” does not mean every Atmos format can pass over ARC. Bose’s compatibility guidance distinguishes compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, commonly used for streaming, from Dolby TrueHD and Dolby MAT, which need eARC on the Bose systems covered by its guide.

| Connection | Dolby Digital Plus Atmos | Dolby TrueHD or Dolby MAT Atmos |
|---|---|---|
| Optical | No | No |
| HDMI ARC | Yes | No |
| HDMI eARC | Yes | Yes |
These are Bose’s stated compatibility results for the Smart Ultra; verify the requirements for your exact equipment and signal path in Bose’s Atmos compatibility guidance. ARC may be sufficient for a streaming app that sends Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, but it is not a universal route for lossless or MAT-based Atmos.
Set the TV to pass audio through
The TV must preserve and forward the incoming audio rather than downmixing it to stereo or converting it to a format without Atmos. Menu names differ by manufacturer and software version, so look for settings equivalent to:
- Digital audio output: Pass Through, Bitstream, Auto, or a Dolby/passthrough mode.
- eARC: On, Auto, or Enabled, if both the TV and soundbar support it.
- HDMI audio format: Bitstream, Dolby, or Passthrough rather than PCM, when that option is offered.
- Dolby Atmos: Enabled, where the TV provides a separate setting.
- TV speakers: Audio System, External Speaker, or Receiver so audio is sent to the Bose soundbar.
- HDMI-CEC: On. The feature may be named Anynet+, Simplink, BRAVIA Sync, or something else depending on the TV.
There is no universal menu path: consult your TV’s manual for its current labels. Bose’s Smart Ultra troubleshooting guide and Smart Soundbar 900 owner’s guide also advise checking the TV’s advanced audio settings and Atmos passthrough.

Confirm the title, plan, app, and device can deliver Atmos
A service may support Atmos without providing it for every program, subscription tier, account, app, device, or region. A surround-sound label does not necessarily mean a title has an Atmos track. Bose likewise notes that not every program on an otherwise compatible service is available in Atmos in its compatibility guidance.
- Choose a title explicitly marked Dolby Atmos in the service you use.
- Check that your subscription tier and the app/device combination provide Atmos for that title in your region.
- Start playback; a title-page badge alone does not confirm which audio track is active.
- Check the live incoming format in the Bose Music app.
- If it still does not show Atmos, try a second known Atmos title or a different app to separate a title-specific issue from a connection or device issue.
Check Apple TV 4K settings and the Bose connection constraint
On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and check that Dolby Atmos appears under Immersive Audio and is enabled. During playback, check for the Dolby Atmos indicator. If the Atmos option is missing, investigate the TV, connection, and device compatibility rather than assuming the streaming app is at fault. Apple describes these checks and its connection guidance at Apple TV 4K and Dolby Atmos.
Apple’s general guidance recommends connecting Apple TV 4K directly to a soundbar or receiver if the TV cannot pass Atmos through, and notes that Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC. That advice has an important Bose-specific limitation: Bose says the Smart Ultra does not provide HDMI video pass-through for external sources, and external devices must connect to the TV. The Smart Soundbar 900 also should not be assumed to accept an external video source directly. Check the exact model’s connections before planning a direct hookup; Bose’s Smart Ultra product page describes its source-device arrangement.

- EASY CONTROL: Enjoy complete control by touch, app, or voice commands. Making it easy to play, pause, and personalize your surround sound from anywhere in the home.
- Apple TV 4K, Smart Ultra or 900, TV with eARC: The TV may pass Atmos to the soundbar if it supports the needed passthrough mode and the signal path is configured correctly.
- Apple TV 4K, Smart Ultra or 900, TV with ARC only: Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos cannot use ARC, and the Bose soundbar does not provide the video pass-through route that might otherwise be used. Native Atmos may therefore be unavailable in this setup.
For other source devices, including game consoles, check both the device’s audio output mode and the TV’s ability to pass its codec over ARC or eARC.

CEC and eARC negotiation problems can leave the TV speakers active, produce PCM or no audio, cause inconsistent volume control, or make Atmos work only after a restart or app change. Bose documents a CEC Alternate On option for some models and a 30-second power reset in the Smart Soundbar 900 troubleshooting guidance. Setting names and behavior can vary across TVs and Bose models.
- Turn off the TV, soundbar, and source device.
- Unplug the soundbar from power for 30 seconds. If optional Bose bass modules or surround speakers are connected, unplug those as well.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable, then power the soundbar and TV back on. Restart the source device.
- Check that the TV’s CEC and eARC settings remain enabled. If your Bose app offers CEC Alternate On, consult the model guide before changing it.
- Update the Bose Music app, soundbar software, TV, and source device; restart the HDMI chain after updates and test again.
Bose instructs owners to keep connected system software current through the Bose Music app. No single firmware number applies to every model and region.

Understand what optical, wireless audio, and TrueSpace can do
- Optical: It can serve as a fallback for ordinary audio, but Bose states that Atmos is not delivered to the covered soundbars over optical. It cannot solve an Atmos signal-path problem.
- Bluetooth, AirPlay, and Chromecast: Bose says these wireless connections do not deliver Atmos content to the Smart Ultra. Use HDMI ARC/eARC for TV audio.
- TrueSpace: It can make stereo or 5.1 content sound more immersive, including a sense of height. That effect does not establish that the source is sending native Atmos.
See Bose’s connection and codec compatibility details and its description of TrueSpace.
If Atmos still does not appear, isolate the bottleneck
Change one part of the signal path at a time and check the Bose app after each test. This helps distinguish a title or app issue from TV passthrough, a source setting, or an intermittent HDMI connection.
- Try another Atmos-marked title, then another streaming app.
- Compare a built-in TV app with an external streamer. If Atmos works only from the TV app, investigate the TV’s passthrough of external HDMI audio.
- Try another HDMI cable if the current connection is loose, damaged, or intermittent.
- Check the source device’s output settings and the TV’s ARC/eARC capability against the format being sent.
- If possible, test the Bose soundbar with another ARC/eARC-capable TV and a known Atmos source.
The limitation is likely compatibility rather than a setting if the Bose model is not Atmos-capable, the TV has no ARC/eARC, the connection is optical or wireless, the source requires eARC but the TV only supports ARC, or the TV cannot pass Atmos from that external source. Replacing the soundbar will not fix a TV that cannot pass the required signal. Bose Smart Ultra owners should also account for the model’s lack of HDMI video pass-through before considering any external-device wiring change.
