For most Yamaha sound bars, connect the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the bar’s HDMI output marked ARC/eARC or TV. Then enable the TV’s HDMI control and external-audio settings, and select the matching input on the bar. If ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable, use optical audio instead. The exact labels and features vary by model, so find the model number before following model-specific setup steps.
Before you connect anything
Check the model number on the sound bar’s rear label, packaging, remote, or manual. Yamaha’s U.S. manual library includes current and older models; the correct input names, app, firmware, and wireless-speaker procedure depend on the exact unit.

- Check which audio ports your TV and sound bar have. The TV must have an ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI port for HDMI audio return. A regular HDMI input generally will not send TV audio back to the bar.
- Have an HDMI cable ready; use one suited to the desired signal and the equipment. Keep an optical cable as a fallback.
- Check for the supplied power adapter, remote batteries, and any wireless subwoofer or surround speakers that came with or are compatible with the bar.
- Use stable Wi-Fi only if your model needs it for app control, network setup, Alexa, MusicCast, or TRUE X functions.
- Turn off the TV and sound bar before connecting or changing cables.
On the sound bar, the TV connection is usually labeled HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC), TV OUT, or similar. HDMI IN, when present, is generally for an external device and pass-through; it is not normally the port that receives audio from the TV.
Connect the sound bar with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Place the bar centrally beneath the TV with its front unobstructed. For wall mounting, use the model’s mounting guide rather than estimating hole positions.
- With both devices off, connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the Yamaha bar’s HDMI output labeled ARC/eARC or TV.
- Connect the bar to power and turn it on.
- In the TV settings, enable HDMI device control (CEC) and ARC/eARC. Depending on the TV brand, CEC may be called Anynet+, Simplink, Bravia Sync, VIERA Link, or simply HDMI-CEC.
- Set the TV’s sound output to an option such as External speakers, Audio system, Receiver, or Sound bar.
- Set digital audio output to Auto or Bitstream when appropriate. If there is no sound, test PCM.
- Select the bar’s TV or HDMI input, play a TV program, and check whether the TV remote changes the bar’s volume.
ARC sends TV audio back over HDMI. eARC is designed for greater audio bandwidth and can carry some high-definition formats, including Dolby Atmos, when the TV, sound bar, source, and settings all support the required path. An eARC-equipped TV does not make an ARC-only bar eARC-capable. Yamaha’s SR-X50A guide explains eARC and recommends suitable cabling for high-definition signals; its SR-X40A guide also distinguishes cable needs by signal. Yamaha’s SR-X90A guide notes that ARC use can require ARC and HDMI Control to be enabled. TV menu wording and behavior vary.

Use optical audio if ARC/eARC is unavailable
- Turn off the TV and sound bar.
- If the optical cable has protective caps, remove them. Connect the TV’s Optical, Digital Audio Out, or S/PDIF Out port to the Yamaha bar’s optical input.
- Turn on both devices. Set the TV’s sound output to optical/digital audio or external audio, then select the bar’s OPTICAL, TV, or corresponding input.
- If the bar is silent, change the TV’s digital-audio format to PCM. Disable the TV’s internal speakers if they continue playing alongside the bar.
Optical is a practical fallback when ARC/eARC is missing or HDMI audio is interrupted. It does not normally provide HDMI-CEC volume and power control, and it may support fewer audio formats. Yamaha also recommends optical as an alternative when ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable in its SR-X90A guide.
Pair a phone or tablet over Bluetooth
- Put the sound bar on its Bluetooth input and start pairing mode using the controls specified for that model.
- On the phone or tablet, open Settings → Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on, and select the Yamaha device name.
- Confirm pairing if prompted, then start playback and choose the bar as the audio output if needed.
Controls vary across Yamaha YAS, ATS, SR, and TRUE X products; consult the manual for your model rather than relying on a universal button-hold time. If pairing fails, disconnect the bar from another paired device, move the phone closer, and retry from Bluetooth pairing mode. Bluetooth is convenient for music, but it can add delay to TV sound and does not provide the same TV-remote integration or surround-format path as HDMI ARC/eARC.

Use the Yamaha app only if your model supports it
An app is not required for basic TV playback. On supported models, it can provide input and volume control, sound-mode and tone adjustments, compatible subwoofer or TRUE X speaker controls, or network and Alexa setup. Yamaha’s Sound Bar Controller compatibility list includes YAS-109, YAS-209, ATS-1090, ATS-2090, SR-X40A, and SR-X50A; network functions require a compatible Yamaha network product and wireless LAN. Other models may use different app support. Check the exact model’s product or downloads page, such as the pages for SR-B30A and SR-B40A, rather than assuming one Yamaha app works with every bar.
Adjust placement and sound for your room
- Keep the bar centered with the TV and avoid blocking its grille with a cabinet edge or other objects.
- Try Standard for everyday TV, Movie for films, Game for games, and Stereo for music or podcasts when you prefer less virtual surround.
- Try Clear Voice if dialogue is difficult to hear. Raise bass or subwoofer level gradually rather than starting at maximum.
- If a wireless subwoofer is included, place it on the floor with clearance around its driver or port and follow the model’s pairing steps. Compatibility and pairing instructions are model-specific; do not assume any Yamaha subwoofer or TRUE X speaker works with any Yamaha bar.
- Avoid playing the TV’s built-in speakers and bar together unless the TV supports a coordinated mode; simultaneous output can sound doubled or delayed.
For example, Yamaha lists Standard, Movie, Game, and Stereo modes, plus Clear Voice and Bass Extension, for the SR-B30A and SR-B40A. Other Yamaha models can use different names or controls.

Troubleshoot missing or interrupted sound
If there is no sound
- Check that HDMI runs from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the sound bar’s HDMI OUT/ARC/eARC port—not to an ordinary TV HDMI input or the bar’s HDMI IN.
- Select the correct sound-bar input.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC on the TV and, where the model requires it, on the bar. Set the TV output to external audio.
- Try PCM as the TV’s digital-audio format.
- Turn both devices off, unplug them briefly, reconnect power, then turn on the TV before the bar.
- Try another HDMI cable. If sound still cuts out, test optical to see whether the problem is specific to the HDMI/CEC path.
- Consult the exact Yamaha manual before resetting the bar.
If the TV remote will not control volume or power
Audio can reach the bar even when control commands do not. Check that the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port, HDMI-CEC is enabled, the TV is set to external speakers, and the bar is on the correct input. If you are using optical, the absence of HDMI-CEC control is expected. Automatic power-on also depends on HDMI-control settings and model behavior; Yamaha’s SR-X90A guide ties automatic startup to HDMI Control.
If sound is delayed
Bluetooth can introduce latency, so use HDMI or optical for TV when synchronization matters. TV audio processing or sync settings can also affect lip-sync; disable unnecessary processing or adjust the TV or bar’s sync control after confirming the connection path. Different apps and broadcast sources may have different delays.

If Dolby Atmos is not detected
- Confirm that the TV and sound bar support the required Atmos path and that they are connected over ARC/eARC as needed.
- Check that the TV is not forcing PCM if that setting prevents the intended format from passing through.
- Verify that the specific title, app, streaming device, or game supplies Atmos and that its output settings allow it.
- Use an HDMI cable appropriate to the connection and check the bar’s format or input display if the model provides one.
An Atmos label on a sound bar does not mean every program or connection will deliver Atmos.
If a wireless subwoofer or surround speaker will not pair
Confirm that the speaker is compatible with the exact bar, then follow the model-specific pairing procedure. Check whether it is already paired to another bar, reduce distance or interference, and install firmware only by following Yamaha’s instructions for that model.
Check firmware by exact model
Firmware is model-specific; do not install a file simply because it appears on a general sound-bar update page. Search Yamaha’s firmware downloads for the exact model and follow its installation instructions. The U.S. page lists, for example, ATS-4080/MusicCast BAR 40/MusicCast BAR 400 version 5.11 dated March 26, 2026; SR-X90A/TRUE X BAR 90A/TRUE X SURROUND 90A version 1.07 dated March 26, 2026; SR-X50A/SR-X40A/ATS-X500 version 1.8.01 dated October 24, 2024; and YAS-109/YAS-209/ATS-1090/ATS-2090 version 5.31 dated August 3, 2022. These entries are not recommendations for other models.
Understand what the connection can—and cannot—improve
A better connection cannot create surround or Atmos content that the source does not provide. What reaches the bar depends on the TV’s audio processing and output settings, the program or device, and the bar’s capabilities. Placement, a suitable sound mode, and sensible dialogue and bass adjustments also affect what you hear. If you connect an external streamer or game console, connect it to the TV or to the bar’s HDMI IN only after checking that model’s audio and video pass-through capabilities.
