HDMI passthrough lets a soundbar receive audio from a source device and forward that device’s video to the TV. The usual connection is source → soundbar HDMI IN → soundbar HDMI OUT → TV. It is useful when a TV cannot pass a source’s audio format to the soundbar, when the TV has too few suitable HDMI inputs, or when you want to route several devices through the soundbar.
You do not automatically need it for Dolby Atmos, 4K/120 gaming, or everyday streaming. If your TV has enough compatible HDMI inputs and eARC reliably carries the required audio, connecting sources directly to the TV is often simpler.

A soundbar with HDMI passthrough has at least one HDMI input and an HDMI output. The source device—such as a game console, Apple TV 4K, PC or UHD Blu-ray player—connects to the soundbar. The soundbar extracts and decodes the audio, then sends the video onward to the television.
Source device → Soundbar HDMI IN → Soundbar HDMI OUT → TV
The soundbar is therefore acting as an audio processor and, potentially, an HDMI switcher. The video is not necessarily improved. If the signal is supported correctly, the picture should remain equivalent to a direct connection. However, the soundbar can also become a bottleneck if its HDMI hardware cannot pass the TV signal’s full resolution, refresh rate, HDR format or gaming features.

HDMI passthrough versus ARC and eARC
ARC and eARC solve a different routing problem. With ARC or eARC, the source connects to the TV, and the TV sends audio back to the soundbar through a compatible HDMI port.
Source device → TV HDMI input
TV HDMI ARC/eARC → Soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC
| Feature | HDMI passthrough | ARC/eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Main function | Routes source video through the soundbar while the soundbar handles source audio | Sends audio from the TV to the soundbar |
| Typical wiring | Source → soundbar → TV | Source → TV; TV ARC/eARC → soundbar |
| Main benefit | Direct source-to-soundbar audio and additional input routing | Simpler TV-centred setup, including built-in TV apps |
| Main risk | The soundbar may limit video bandwidth or features | The TV may limit, convert or reject the source’s audio format |
| Best suited to | Consoles, UHD Blu-ray players, Apple TV 4K and PCs | Built-in TV streaming and external devices handled well by the TV |
ARC has less bandwidth than eARC. eARC is designed for higher-quality audio, including uncompressed multichannel audio and lossless formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, subject to the capabilities of every device in the chain. Sony explains the practical differences between ARC and eARC in its ARC and eARC support guide, while Dolby describes eARC’s higher-bandwidth role in its home-entertainment FAQ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not confuse soundbar passthrough with a TV’s “Pass Through” setting
The word passthrough is used for two different functions:
- Soundbar HDMI passthrough: Video enters the soundbar through HDMI IN and leaves through HDMI OUT. The soundbar handles the source audio.
- TV audio passthrough: A TV menu setting—often called Pass Through, Bitstream, Auto or Digital Sound Output—controls how the TV sends audio through ARC or eARC.
A TV’s audio passthrough setting does not mean the TV can pass video through a soundbar. ARC and eARC are also separate from HDMI-CEC, the control system that can enable automatic power, input switching and volume control.
Why use HDMI passthrough?
1. To avoid the TV limiting source audio
A source connected directly to a soundbar can send its audio to the soundbar without relying on the TV’s audio compatibility. This matters with lossless soundtracks and high-bandwidth formats such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X or some Dolby Atmos implementations.
For example, Apple says that Apple TV 4K may need to connect directly to a compatible soundbar or receiver for its high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos signal because many televisions do not pass that signal through. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K and Dolby Atmos setup guidance.
2. To connect devices when the TV has too few suitable HDMI inputs
If every compatible TV input is already occupied—or only one input supports HDMI 2.1 features—a soundbar with multiple HDMI inputs can provide another way to connect sources. This is especially useful for a console, streaming box and disc player.
Check the input count carefully. One HDMI input and one HDMI output provide one-source passthrough, not a full HDMI switcher. If you have several devices, count the soundbar’s inputs and compare their specifications individually.

3. To preserve video features, if the soundbar supports them
A capable HDMI passthrough connection can carry the source’s video to the TV while handling audio separately. Depending on the model, it may support 4K, 8K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM.
But “4K passthrough” may mean only 4K at 60 Hz. It does not automatically mean 4K/120, VRR or every HDR format. HDMI 2.1 is also not a guarantee that all HDMI 2.1 features are supported. The individual specifications matter.
4. To centralise switching and remote control
When compatible HDMI-CEC is enabled, connected devices may power on, switch inputs and adjust volume through a TV or soundbar remote. CEC is a control feature, not an audio or video format. Roku’s HDMI settings guidance explains how ARC and CEC work together in supported setups.
5. To avoid some TV processing delays
Directly connecting a source to the soundbar can avoid a particular TV-processing path, and some systems may show better lip-sync as a result. It does not guarantee zero latency. Delay depends on the source, TV, soundbar, game mode, signal format, firmware and audio processing.
For gaming, enable Game Mode where appropriate, test both wiring arrangements and use the soundbar’s lip-sync adjustment if necessary.
Do you need HDMI passthrough for Dolby Atmos?
No. HDMI passthrough is not universally required for Dolby Atmos. The correct connection depends on the Atmos format and the capabilities of the source, TV and soundbar.
Recommended Free Tools
Atmos can reach a soundbar through several routes:
- A compatible TV app can send compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos through ARC or eARC.
- A source can connect directly to the soundbar by HDMI.
- A source can connect to the TV, with the TV forwarding Atmos through eARC.
- Some systems can carry compressed Atmos over ordinary ARC, depending on the devices.
Atmos is not one single bandwidth requirement. Streaming services commonly use compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos. UHD Blu-ray can use Dolby TrueHD-based Atmos, while devices such as Apple TV 4K and some consoles can use Dolby MAT. These formats may require different capabilities.
Dolby’s soundbar setup guide recommends the appropriate HDMI, ARC or eARC connection and a bitstream-capable source configuration. The practical rule is simple: use direct HDMI passthrough when the TV cannot forward the source’s particular Atmos format; otherwise, a direct-to-TV connection with eARC may be preferable.

Do you need passthrough for PS5, Xbox or PC gaming?
Only if the console or PC must connect through the soundbar. For 4K/120 gaming, direct connection to a suitable TV HDMI 2.1 port is often the safer arrangement.
Preferred setup when the TV supports the required audio
PS5, Xbox or PC → TV HDMI 2.1 input
TV HDMI eARC → Soundbar HDMI eARC
This keeps the video signal away from the soundbar while eARC carries audio. It is often the best choice when the TV can pass the desired format reliably and has enough compatible inputs.

PS5, Xbox or PC → Soundbar HDMI IN
Soundbar HDMI OUT → TV HDMI input
Use this route when the TV cannot pass the required audio or does not have enough suitable inputs. Before buying, confirm that the soundbar passes the complete gaming signal:
- 4K at 120 Hz, if required
- VRR and its supported range
- ALLM
- HDR10, Dolby Vision or another HDR format you use
- HDCP version
- Required colour depth and chroma bandwidth
A soundbar limited to 4K/60 can force a console to run at 60 Hz even when the TV and console support 120 Hz. VRR, HDR or Dolby Vision may also disappear. Sony’s HT-A5000 specifications illustrate why the complete specification matters: the manufacturer lists separate capabilities for HDMI, eARC, 8K, 4K/120 and HDR compatibility. See the product page and detailed specifications.
When HDMI passthrough is unnecessary
You probably do not need to prioritise passthrough when:
- You mainly use built-in TV streaming apps.
- All external devices connect directly to the TV.
- The TV has enough suitable HDMI inputs.
- The TV supports eARC and reliably forwards the required audio formats.
- You do not use 4K/120 gaming, VRR or lossless disc audio.
- The soundbar has weaker passthrough specifications than the TV.
In these situations, an eARC-only soundbar can be simpler. The source connects to the TV, the soundbar connects to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, and the TV manages the video inputs.

Do not rely on a product label such as “4K passthrough” or “HDMI 2.1” alone. Check these specifications:
- HDMI input count: Confirm whether the bar has one input or several.
- Resolution and refresh rate: Distinguish 4K/60 from 4K/120 and verify 8K if needed.
- HDR formats: Check HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG separately.
- Gaming features: Look specifically for VRR, ALLM and any stated FreeSync or G-SYNC compatibility.
- HDCP: Confirm the version required by protected 4K content.
- Audio formats: Check Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X and Dolby MAT where relevant.
- eARC: Confirm that both the TV and soundbar support it if you plan to connect sources directly to the TV.
- Per-port limitations: HDMI inputs on the same soundbar may not support identical bandwidth or formats.
- Firmware: Check whether important passthrough features require a firmware update.
Also inspect the TV’s individual HDMI ports. One port may support HDMI 2.1 while another supports only HDMI 2.0. The eARC port may also be different from the port that supports 4K/120.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | First remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Picture works, but audio is only stereo | The source or TV is set to PCM/stereo, or the TV is not passing bitstream audio | Set the source and TV audio output to Bitstream, Pass Through or Auto |
| Atmos is missing from Apple TV 4K | The TV cannot forward the required high-bandwidth Atmos signal over ARC | Connect Apple TV 4K directly to a compatible soundbar HDMI input |
| A console is limited to 4K/60 | The soundbar’s passthrough is limited to 4K/60 | Connect the console directly to a TV HDMI 2.1 port and use eARC |
| HDR or Dolby Vision disappears | The soundbar does not support that HDR format or HDCP level | Bypass the soundbar or use a compatible passthrough input |
| VRR does not work | The soundbar lacks VRR passthrough or has an implementation limitation | Connect the console directly to the TV |
| TV apps produce no sound | ARC/eARC or CEC is disabled, or the cable is in the wrong port | Use the labelled ARC/eARC ports and enable the required features |
| Intermittent black screen | HDMI handshake, cable, firmware or bandwidth problem | Power-cycle devices, update firmware and test a suitable certified cable |
| Remote volume control fails | HDMI-CEC is disabled or incompatible | Enable CEC on the relevant devices or use the soundbar remote |
| Audio and video are out of sync | TV or soundbar processing delay | Enable Game Mode, test direct-TV wiring and adjust lip-sync |
If troubleshooting is necessary, turn off the TV, soundbar and source. Disconnect power for about one minute, check that every cable is in the correct HDMI IN, HDMI OUT and ARC/eARC port, then reconnect the TV and soundbar before reconnecting the source. Temporarily disable CEC to isolate input-switching problems, update firmware and test a certified High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable appropriate to the signal and cable length.
A more expensive cable does not automatically improve sound or picture. The cable simply needs to support the bandwidth required by the connection.
The practical buying decision
Choose a soundbar with HDMI passthrough when you need direct source-to-soundbar audio, have too few suitable TV inputs, use a source whose audio the TV cannot forward, or want to route several devices through the soundbar. It is particularly relevant to Apple TV 4K, UHD Blu-ray players, consoles and PCs.
Do not prioritise it merely because the box says “4K passthrough.” Confirm the exact refresh rate, HDR formats, VRR, ALLM, HDCP and audio support. For a 4K/120 console, direct-to-TV wiring is often better unless the soundbar explicitly supports the entire gaming signal.
For a simple setup based on TV apps and a capable eARC television, a soundbar with HDMI eARC but no video passthrough may be perfectly adequate. The best connection is the one that preserves the required video features while delivering the audio format your source actually produces.
