That residue can keep producing an unpleasant smell. Washing, scrubbing, rinsing, and completely drying the empty container are the practical next steps; adding fragrance only masks the odor.
Why does an empty trash bin still smell?
A bin can look empty and still have residue on its interior, lid, or rim. Leaks and spills may remain after the bag is removed. York County, Virginia, warns that “Food and liquid can leak out of loosely bagged trash and create a stinky mess.” Its guidance recommends washing and scrubbing the empty container to deal with that buildup: York County’s outdoor container maintenance advice.

Warmth and direct sunlight can make odors from food-waste bins more noticeable. Greater Cambridge Shared Waste says warm weather can make bins smell and attract flies, and Monash recommends shade for green-waste bins. These are practical local waste-service recommendations, not proof of one specific odor-producing substance or mechanism.

York County’s method is intended for outdoor containers. Clean the bin when it is empty, such as after collection, and choose a place where rinse water can drain safely.

- Gather supplies. Use dish liquid, water, a bucket, rubber gloves, and a long cleaning tool such as an extendable scrub brush.
- Rinse and scrub. Rinse the can, then scrub its interior with a mixture of vinegar, dish liquid, and water.
- Drain and rinse again. Tip the container on its side to drain it, then rinse it thoroughly.
- Let it dry completely. Leave the lid open overnight so the inside can dry. York County advises against using bleach in the containers.
For an indoor kitchen bin, adapt the outdoor method to avoid splashing or water damage: clean it somewhere suitable, rinse away cleaner, and dry all surfaces before putting in a new liner.
How to prevent the odor from coming back
- Limit leaks: Tie or seal bags securely, and do not put trash into a wet bin. Rinse food containers before discarding them. These steps follow York County’s container guidance.
- Reduce heat exposure: Keep the lid closed and store outdoor bins out of direct sunlight when practical. Greater Cambridge Shared Waste’s bin-cleaning advice notes that shade can help in warm weather.
- Manage food scraps separately where local rules allow: Monash recommends keeping a food-scrap caddy closed and out of direct sun, emptying it every 2 to 3 days, and rinsing it after use. Its guidance also suggests freezing meat, bones, and other especially smelly scraps in an airtight container until the night before collection. - Use a suitable lidded kitchen container: King County recommends a tight-fitting lid for food-scrap containers and says a carbon filter under the lid is an optional odor-control measure. It also suggests freezing contents to reduce odor and rinsing the container as needed. Check your local compost program’s acceptance rules before changing how you dispose of food waste: King County’s composting guidance.
What if the bin still smells after cleaning?
After washing and fully drying it, inspect the lid, rim, base, liner, and the place where the bin is stored for missed residue or a separate source of odor. This is a practical troubleshooting sequence based on the need to remove residue and prevent leaks; it is not a tested diagnostic procedure. If the smell appears to come from somewhere other than the bin, cleaning the container may not resolve it.

Does a smelly trash bin mean there is a health hazard?
Odor alone does not identify a substance or establish a health risk. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says reactions and potential health effects from environmental odors depend on the substance and exposure conditions, including concentration, frequency, and duration. Its guidance is general environmental-health information, not a medical assessment of a particular household bin: ATSDR’s environmental odors information.
