Flies and maggots are prevented by keeping flies away from suitable waste. Tie food-waste bags securely, put them straight into the bin, and keep its lid closed. If larvae are already present, empty the bin first, then clean it carefully.
Why flies and maggots get into outdoor bins
Flies are attracted to exposed food and other waste and may lay eggs there; maggots are fly larvae. Salford City Council puts the practical cause simply: “You only have a problem with maggots if flies can get to your waste.” Salford’s guidance on maggots explains why limiting access matters more than relying on collection frequency alone.

In warm weather, eggs can hatch quickly. Hastings Borough Council says this can happen “within 24 hours”; that is a possible timing, not a guarantee for every temperature or set of conditions. Hastings’ food-waste FAQs give the timing and recommend keeping waste contained.

A routine to keep flies out
- Contain food waste. Put scraps into a tied bag or the appropriate food-waste container promptly. Do not leave food or pet food exposed beside or inside the bin. For especially messy or attractive waste, double-bagging is an option; West Suffolk Council also recommends tying bags and squeezing out excess air. - Close the lid fully. Check that bags or other rubbish are not preventing the lid from shutting. A closed lid helps keep flies from reaching the waste.
- Choose a cooler spot when practical. Store the bin out of direct sun if you can, and clean food spills around it. Wash or rinse the bin after it has been emptied. Hastings and the City of York Council include keeping bins clean and cool among their prevention advice.
- Manage the kitchen caddy. Keep its lid closed and empty it regularly. Liners can help contain scraps, but accepted types vary by local scheme: Hastings mentions compostable liners, while Cambridge City Council refers to paper liners. How to clean a bin that already has maggots
- Wait until collection, if possible, and let the bin be emptied. Cambridge City Council says most maggots will leave when the wheeled bin is emptied. Cambridge’s bin-hygiene guidance
- Wash the empty bin. York Council advises using boiling water to kill remaining maggots, while warning people to take care. Avoid splashes and burns, and use a method you can manage safely. York’s advice on preventing bin problems
- Follow cleaner labels and do not mix products. If you use a cleaning product, follow its directions; do not combine cleaning chemicals. Rinse away residue as directed and allow the bin to dry before putting in fresh waste.
- Restart the prevention routine. Secure waste in bags, shut the lid, and clean any spills so flies have less opportunity to reach food or residue.
Does more frequent collection prevent maggots?
Not by itself. Salford City Council says collection frequency is irrelevant to whether eggs can hatch once flies have access to waste. The useful day-to-day controls are limiting access, containing food waste, closing the lid, and keeping the bin clean; a more frequent collection schedule is not a substitute for them.

Do you need pesticides or scented products?
The council guidance cited here focuses on keeping waste contained and cleaning the bin. It does not establish that fragrances or pesticides are necessary for preventing maggots. Start with the sanitation and exclusion steps above rather than treating a scent or spray as a replacement for them.
