It depends on how the deodorizer uses solar energy. A light-activated catalyst needs light for its reported odor-breaking process, and testing described by the American Chemical Society (ACS) does not establish that the studied insert works at night or quantify how it performs in shade. A different type of device may use a solar panel to charge a battery, then run on stored power after dark—but “solar powered” alone does not guarantee nighttime operation.
Why the type of solar deodorizer matters
“Solar” can describe two different mechanisms, with different implications for shade and nighttime use:

| Design | How it works | What the evidence establishes about night or shade |
|---|---|---|
| Light-activated catalyst insert | Light activates a catalyst that breaks down odor compounds; the ACS-described design uses a lens to concentrate light on a lithium-modified manganese-oxide catalyst. | The ACS release reports performance in natural sunlight. It gives no nighttime or shade test, or quantified minimum light level. |
| Solar panel with battery storage | A panel charges a battery that powers an electrical component later. | A 2014 patent publication describes this arrangement and proposes operation during continuous rainy days. It does not establish the performance or availability of a retail product, or a measured runtime after dark. |
| Solar panel powering a fan | A panel drives a fan that distributes deodorizer. | A separate 2014 patent describes a panel and fan but does not specify a battery. It is not evidence of nighttime operation. |
The distinction is between light acting directly on a catalyst and sunlight being converted into electricity that can be stored. A device in the first category needs light for the reported process; a device in the second could run after dark if it has a charged battery and is designed to operate from it.
What the sunlight-tested catalyst can—and cannot—tell you
An ACS research release dated October 1, 2026, describes a removable, transparent, gas-permeable lid insert. A lens concentrates light onto a lithium-modified manganese-oxide (MnO₂) catalyst. The process uses light rather than the electrical heating used in conventional catalytic odor abatement, according to study corresponding author Jinlong Wang.

- POWERFUL ODOR ELIMINATOR FIGHTS SMELLS AT THE SOURCE: BEEST’s outdoor trash can deodorizer odor eliminator uses biodegradable cellulose granules to neutralize foul smells and soak up leaks, spills, and waste at the bottom of bins and dumpsters.
- ECO-FRIENDLY & SAFE FOR KIDS/PETS: Our trash can odor eliminator is a non-toxic, biodegradable formula made with essential oils like rosemary, peppermint, and lemongrass for a cleaner, safer, and fresher trash experience—with no sticky residue left behind.
- GARBAGE CAN DEODORIZER FOR ALL OUTDOOR RECEPTACLES, SIZES, & SPACES: Ideal for residential bins, restaurant dumpsters, and public facilities. Usage varies by waste type and cleaning frequency—food waste and uncleaned bins may require a heavier application than dry debris.
- EASY SPRINKLE-BASED APPLICATION WITH DUAL-ACTION CAP: This trash odor eliminator can be applied easily by sprinkling it into the base, halfway through filling, or on full loads. Unlike other deodorizer stick-ons that fall into the bin within a week, our dual-action cap allows for a wide or controlled, mess-free application.
- PROUDLY MADE AND TESTED IN THE USA: American quality you can trust – Beest’s Dumpster Defender trash deodorizer is backed by an American-owned company and dedicated USA-based customer support to help you keep your space clean and odor-free
The release says the insert was tested with decaying fruit, bread and wine, and that it addressed acetic acid, identified as the main culprit among odors from rotting waste in the study context. The catalyst continuously broke down acetic acid for more than 40 days in natural sunlight. That is a sunlight-test result—not a battery-life figure, a promise of 40 days without attention, or evidence that the catalyst keeps working in darkness.
The release reports no shade trial, nighttime trial or light threshold for this insert. It also says the refined catalyst was more effective than manganese oxide alone or activated carbon in simulated sunlight in laboratory conditions, and performed well in humid conditions. Those findings do not establish performance in every outdoor climate, bin or placement.

How to assess a bin’s placement and night claims
If the device relies on direct light
- Look for the maker’s specified light conditions and for testing in the placement you expect to use, such as full sun or partial shade.
- Do not assume a shaded location will perform like the natural-sunlight test: the available ACS account does not quantify how shade changes this insert’s performance.
- Do not expect nighttime operation from a light-activated process unless the particular product documents a separate stored-energy or other nighttime mechanism.
If it uses a solar panel and battery
- Check whether a battery is included and whether the panel charges it, rather than powering the deodorizing component only while illuminated.
- Look for the manufacturer’s stated operating time after charging, plus the conditions behind that figure. A patent describing a battery-backed concept is not a runtime specification for a product.
- Check whether the device’s own documentation addresses cloudy weather, shade and the expected charging conditions.
Neither “solar” on a label nor a patent describing a design answers these model-specific questions. The available sources do not establish a current retail version of the experimental catalyst insert, compare consumer models, or provide model prices, battery runtimes or quantified shade results.

How this differs from an activated-carbon filter
Activated-carbon filters placed under a bin lid are a separate, passive odor-control option; they do not need sunlight to activate a catalyst or a solar-charged battery to run. The ACS release says they can help contain odor, but notes that they do not work well in hot, humid environments. That is not evidence that a carbon filter performs as well as the studied catalyst.
