Poinsettias became December icons through a layered history: they are native to Mexico and rooted in Indigenous culture, they became part of Mexican Christmas traditions, and their vivid seasonal display later made them a natural fit for U.S. holiday décor. Joel Roberts Poinsett helped introduce the plant to U.S. horticultural circles in the 1820s; commercial growing and promotion by the Ecke family helped turn it into a widespread American Christmas fixture.
Where poinsettias came from
The poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima, is native to Mexico. Its history there predates its familiar English name and its popularity in the United States. In Mexico it is known as Nochebuena, a name that refers to Christmas Eve, and as flor de Nochebuena. Mexico’s environment ministry describes it as a plant domesticated by Indigenous cultures. The Associated Press also reports the Nahuatl name cuetlaxochitl and the plant’s ceremonial and cultural importance in Indigenous communities.
That background matters: poinsettias did not acquire a Christmas connection solely because American growers marketed them. The flower was already associated with Mexican Christmas traditions before it became a U.S. holiday staple. Mexico’s environment ministry and the Associated Press describe that cultural context.
Why the plant looks festive in December
The familiar red parts of a poinsettia are not petals. They are bracts—modified leaves—that surround small flowers at the center of the plant. Red is the best-known color, but poinsettias also come in pink, white and patterned forms, according to Smithsonian Gardens.

- GROWING REQUIREMENTS: These Poinsettia seeds thrive in well-draining soil with temperatures between 60-70°F, requiring bright indirect sunlight for optimal growth
- PACKAGE CONTENTS: Set of 20 premium quality Poinsettia seeds capable of growing into vibrant red holiday plants with deep green foliage
- MATURE SIZE: When fully grown, plants can reach heights of 2-3 feet tall and spread 1-2 feet wide in proper indoor growing conditions
- BLOOMING SEASON: Plants typically flower during winter months, producing striking red bracts that create the classic holiday appearance
- PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in moistened potting mix, maintain consistent soil moisture, and expect germination within 14-21 days
The plant’s dramatic color and seasonal display helped it find a place in holiday decorating. Its red and green appearance suits familiar Christmas palettes, while its Mexican Christmas association gives the seasonal connection a deeper history than color alone. Smithsonian Gardens and the Natural History Museum, London, discuss the plant’s place in holiday displays and traditions.
How poinsettias reached the United States
Joel Roberts Poinsett, a U.S. diplomat and botanist, helped bring the plant into American horticultural circles in the 1820s. Sources differ on the precise date: Smithsonian Gardens gives 1825 for its introduction to the United States, while the Associated Press describes Poinsett encountering it in 1828. The safest summary is that his role came in the 1820s.

Poinsett’s role was significant, but it does not make him the plant’s originator or the source of its Mexican holiday meanings. The common English name honors him; the plant itself and its cultural history long predate that U.S. connection.
How poinsettias became an American Christmas fixture
The plant’s later popularity in the United States grew through commercial cultivation and promotion. The Ecke family, known for growing poinsettias and publicizing them as Christmas plants, helped make them a familiar seasonal purchase and decoration. Their contribution was to popularize the plant in the U.S. holiday market—not to create its Mexican traditions. The Smithsonian Libraries and Archives and Smithsonian Magazine trace that American commercial story.

The scale of that popularity is clear in one historical snapshot: the American Phytopathological Society reported that more than 65 million poinsettia plants were sold nationwide in the United States in 2000. That figure describes sales in that year, not the current market. The society’s feature provides the dated statistic.

“Poinsettia” is only one name for the plant. Nochebuena and flor de Nochebuena reflect its Mexican Christmas association; cuetlaxochitl connects it to Nahuatl language and Indigenous history. The Associated Press reported renewed attention to that name and to the complex legacy of Poinsett, including his slaveholding and role in policies affecting Indigenous peoples.

For some people, choosing cuetlaxochitl is a way to foreground the plant’s Indigenous history rather than the U.S. namesake. The Associated Press quoted Mexican history professor Elena Jackson Albarrán describing a trend toward people saying, “Don’t call this flower either poinsettia or Nochebuena. It’s cuetlaxochitl,” and Mexican biologist Laura Trejo discussing its continuing ceremonial use. Those perspectives do not erase the plant’s different names and traditions; they show why its story is more layered than a simple origin anecdote.
