Why Mold Is Growing in Your Garden Soil—and When to Worry

White or silvery fuzz on soil often points to a too-wet growing medium. Learn when moisture adjustments are enough and which plant symptoms may signal white mold disease.

White or silvery fuzz on the surface of potting mix or seed-starting soil usually means the medium has stayed too wet. By itself, that surface growth is commonly a harmless fungus, not proof that a plant is diseased. Let the mix dry somewhat between waterings and check airflow and drainage. The exception to watch for is white mold disease: growth on stems or leaves, lesions, wilting, or hard black bodies calls for a different response.

What white fuzz on soil usually means

On seed-starting mix and container soil, silvery or fuzzy growth confined to the surface is commonly associated with persistently damp growing medium. University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes this as a common occurrence in seed starting and a typical sign that the medium is too wet. Iowa State Extension says whitish or brown molds on peat pots and other organic material are unsightly but do not harm healthy seedlings.

That guidance concerns visible surface growth in pots and seed-starting media; it does not identify every organism that might appear in outdoor garden soil. Also distinguish fuzz from a flat, non-fuzzy white deposit: minerals in water or excess fertilizer can leave residue on the surface, according to an Ask Extension response, but that residue is not mold.

Why damp soil encourages surface growth

When growing medium remains wet, fungi that naturally occur in soil or organic material can grow across its surface. Water may linger because the mix is compacted, a drainage hole is blocked, or a pot is standing in runoff. If the surface is fuzzy and the plant otherwise looks healthy, moisture management is a sensible first step rather than assuming the plant has an infection.

For seedlings, excess moisture matters even if the visible surface fungus is not injuring them: overly wet conditions can raise the risk of damping-off, a serious seedling problem. A surface coating alone does not establish damping-off; watch for seedlings that are collapsing or otherwise failing, and follow extension guidance if symptoms appear.

How to tell surface fungus from white mold disease

What you observe More consistent with What to do
Silvery or fuzzy growth limited to wet soil or seed-starting mix; plant appears healthy Common surface fungus associated with wet medium Reduce persistent wetness, improve airflow, and check drainage.
White surface deposit that is not fuzzy Possible mineral or fertilizer residue Review water and fertilizer inputs; the appearance alone does not identify the exact source.
Cottony growth on stems or leaves, tan or bleached lesions, wilt above an affected area, or hard black bodies on or inside stems Possible Sclerotinia white mold disease Remove infected material carefully and seek local extension or diagnostic advice.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a plant pathogen, unlike the common surface growth described above. Minnesota Extension identifies cottony growth on infected plant parts, stem lesions, wilted leaves above the infection, and hard black sclerotia on or in infected stems as signs of white mold disease. A fuzzy soil surface alone is not enough to diagnose it.

Minnesota Extension’s page, reviewed in 2026, says this pathogen has more than 400 host plant species and that its sclerotia can survive in soil or plant debris for five years or longer. Those figures concern the disease-causing fungus, not ordinary surface fuzz.

What to do about ordinary growth on potting or seed-starting mix

  1. Let the medium dry somewhat between waterings. Avoid keeping it continually wet, while still watering as needed for the plants you are growing.
  2. Improve airflow around seedlings. University of Maine recommends spacing trays and placing a fan nearby.
  3. Check drainage. Make sure container holes are open, the mix is not compacted, and pots are not sitting in water or runoff.
  4. For future seed starting, use seed-starting precautions. University of Maine recommends sterile, soil-less medium, judicious watering, and early airflow. This is seed-starting advice, not a direction to sterilize outdoor garden soil.

If seedlings develop damping-off symptoms, University of Maine says affected seedlings often will not recover and may need to be removed and destroyed. For more concerning plant symptoms, a local extension service can advise on diagnosis; Iowa State Extension describes submitting plant samples to its Plant & Insect Diagnostic Clinic for investigation and confirmation.

What to do if white mold disease is suspected

If cottony growth is on plant tissue and is accompanied by lesions, wilt, or black sclerotia, do not treat it as merely a damp-soil problem. Remove infected plants promptly and avoid spreading the hard resting bodies. Minnesota Extension advises burning or burying infected plants away from future vegetable or flower gardens, subject to local disposal rules. It says composting is appropriate only when the pile reaches 148 to 158°F for at least 21 days.

Minnesota Extension also notes that sclerotia can produce small mushrooms in spring and summer when conditions are 51 to 68°F. Finding a mushroom does not, by itself, diagnose disease; use plant symptoms and a local diagnostic service when uncertain.

Should you use cinnamon or hydrogen peroxide?

The cited extension guidance for fuzzy growth on potting soil focuses on reducing excess moisture, improving airflow, and correcting drainage. It does not establish cinnamon or diluted hydrogen peroxide as proven treatments for this problem, so start with the growing conditions rather than relying on either as a cure.
