A blinking Samsung refrigerator display can signal a warm compartment, normal startup checks, a misplaced ice bucket, or a specific error code. The meaning depends on exactly what is flashing. Before resetting anything, note the blinking display or indicator, your model number, and whether the refrigerator is still cooling.
First, identify what is blinking
Note whether the temperature digits are flashing, all icons are lit, a named indicator such as Ice Off or Autofill is blinking, or the display is showing a code. Record the refrigerator’s model number and whether cooling has stopped. If random display segments are lit, take a photo: Samsung says some older or nonnumeric displays can show error codes as seemingly random segments that a technician may be able to interpret. See Samsung’s guide to a blinking temperature display.

If the temperature display is blinking
Samsung Electronics America says the control panel, or part of it, may blink when the refrigerator temperature is above 59°F. An open door or a recent power outage can contribute to a temperature rise. Check that both refrigerator and freezer doors close fully and that food or packaging is not keeping them ajar.
If the refrigerator otherwise appears to be working after a door-opening or outage event, keep the doors shut and allow up to four hours for cooling recovery, as Samsung advises. This recovery period is different from the longer settling time after you change a temperature setting.

If you changed the temperature setting
Samsung says the display may take up to four hours to show the new setting, and the refrigerator may take up to 28 hours to reach it if the doors remain closed. Keep food clear of interior vents and inspect the door seals for dirt or damage. If the display is still blinking 28 hours after a temperature adjustment, Samsung advises requesting service. Its cooling guidance also recommends service if food spoils before its normal expiration period after these checks. A refrigerator thermometer can help you monitor compartment temperature during a warning, but it will not repair a fault.
If another indicator or a code is blinking
Use the exact indicator or code with the manual for your refrigerator model. Samsung’s U.S. error-code guide gives these examples; meanings and button combinations can vary by model.

- Autofill blinking: This indicator has its own condition; check the model’s manual rather than treating it as a temperature warning.

- 88 88, 83E, 85E, or 86E: Samsung associates these codes with power, voltage, or communication faults. Its U.S. guide directs users to interrupt power for 60 seconds and seek support if the code returns. Apply this step only when it matches the instructions for the code shown.
- A blinking deli-drawer control panel: Samsung’s U.S. guidance specifies a two-minute power interruption for this condition, followed by service if the blinking continues after restart.
- An unlisted code or random blinking segments: Do not try to clear it. Photograph the display and contact Samsung support for diagnosis.
Samsung India’s guide, last updated June 17, 2024, lists codes 71, 72, and 73 as examples of high temperature or a door left open in the freezer, refrigerator, and Flex Zone compartments, respectively. These are region- and model-dependent examples, not a universal code list. Check your own manual or the relevant regional support guide: Samsung India’s refrigerator error-code guide.
Do not reset a code just to make it disappear
Samsung warns against unplugging the refrigerator or manipulating the panel to clear a displayed error unless the instructions for that code direct you to do so. An unauthorized reset can hinder diagnosis. Follow a reset only when Samsung’s directions for the specific indicator or code call for it; reset steps for one condition are not interchangeable with another.

When to contact Samsung support
- The same error code returns after the reset specified for that code.
- A temperature warning remains beyond the recovery or settling period that applies to your situation.
- The refrigerator is not cooling properly, or food is spoiling unexpectedly.
- You cannot identify the signal from the display and your model’s manual.
Have the model number, a photo of the display, and a note of when the blinking started ready when you contact support. If food safety is uncertain, do not rely on a blinking display alone to judge whether food is safe.
