To process a small batch of natural clay, slake it in water, mix it into a pourable slurry, screen out coarse debris, let the fine material settle, pour off excess water, and dry the clay until workable. First test a small sample: moist clay that bends around a finger without cracking is a promising sign of plasticity, but neither that test nor settling proves the clay is suitable for firing or safe for food-contact use.
Find a sample and check whether it is workable
Clay-rich earth may occur in exposed banks and other naturally exposed ground, but its appearance alone cannot tell you whether it will behave like pottery clay. Take a small sample before collecting more, and check land ownership and local collection rules. Avoid protected or ecologically sensitive sites.

Try a simple plasticity check
Moisten a little material and roll it into a worm-like strand. Bend the strand around a finger. If it bends without cracking or separating, that is an encouraging initial sign for forming. It is only a hand test: it does not identify the minerals or show how the clay will behave in a kiln.
Keep unknown deposits separate
Natural clay can contain a mixture of clay minerals and other fine materials, and clays can carry contaminants. Keep samples from different locations separate so you can assess each one. Do not treat color, texture, or successful hand-forming as evidence that a deposit is clean.

Process clay with the wet method
Wet processing is a practical small-batch approach because it lets you screen out coarse inclusions from a slurry. Use clean containers and a screen or sieve; choose its opening according to the texture you want, since no single mesh size is established for every deposit.
- Break up and slake the material. If the sample is dry, break it into smaller pieces and cover it with water. The USAID guide gives a slaking interval of 1 to 24 hours, depending on how quickly the clay breaks down; that is a guide-specific range, not a guaranteed schedule for every material. Check for softened pieces and extend the soak if needed.
- Mix it into a slurry. Stir the softened clay with enough water to make a pourable slip. Break apart lumps as much as practical so the mixture can pass through the screen.
- Screen out coarse inclusions. Pour the slurry through a sieve or screen into a clean container. This catches stones, sand, roots, and other coarse material. Rinse the retained residue if clay is still clinging to it and you want to recover it. A finer screen retains fewer coarse particles but may slow the process; the appropriate opening depends on the intended texture.
- Let the screened slurry settle. Leave the container undisturbed until the fine material has settled and clearer water sits above it. Settling time depends on the sample and how dilute the slurry is.
- Decant the clear water. Carefully pour or siphon off the upper water without disturbing the settled clay. The remaining material will still be wet and may need further dewatering.
- Drain and dry to a workable consistency. Put the thick slurry in cloth to drain, then spread it on a suitable drying surface. Check it as it dries; weather, batch size, and water content all affect how quickly it stops being sticky and becomes workable.
- Temper and wedge if needed. Add temper only when it suits the intended forming and firing behavior, and mix it through thoroughly. Wedge the clay to even out its moisture and texture. There is no universal temper or recipe for all natural clays.
- Store the prepared clay airtight. Keep it in an airtight bag or container to prevent it drying out before use.
What simple tests can—and cannot—tell you
A hand test checks plasticity, not firing performance
A strand that bends without cracking suggests the moist material can be formed. It does not establish mineral identity, firing range, fired strength, or suitability for a particular kiln process.

A settling jar estimates texture, not mineral identity
As particles settle, a container can illustrate relative gravel, sand, silt, and clay-sized fractions. The result is an approximate texture demonstration, not a mineral-analysis assay. Identifying clay minerals may require laboratory methods such as X-ray diffraction.
Test before relying on a batch
Make small test pieces and evaluate them in the firing setup intended for the project before using a larger batch. Do not assume an unspecified wild-clay deposit will fire at a particular temperature, produce durable ware, or be food-safe. For safety-critical or food-contact claims, use qualified testing rather than a hand test or settling jar.

Choose the preparation approach to suit the project
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Wet slaking or dry preparation | Wet processing makes it easier to screen and settle out coarse inclusions; the cited practical guides describe this method in detail. |
| Screen opening | A coarser screen removes larger debris quickly. A finer screen retains fewer coarse particles but can slow processing. The right opening depends on the intended texture. |
| Whether to add temper | Decide based on forming, drying, and fired test results for the intended project rather than following a fixed recipe. |
| Field estimate or mineral identification | Settling gives an approximate view of particle-size fractions. Mineral-specific identification calls for laboratory methods such as X-ray diffraction. |
Why natural clay varies
“Clay” can refer either to very fine particles or to a family of minerals. A clay-rich soil is therefore not necessarily a uniform ceramic material: a sample can combine clay minerals with fine quartz, carbonates, metal oxides, and other substances. Clay minerals commonly form through weathering, but the composition of a particular deposit cannot be established by texture alone.
