DIY Ice Lanterns: A Step-by-Step Winter Garden Guide

A practical guide to making a winter garden ice lantern with household containers, decorative greenery and a carefully chosen light source.

Make a simple ice lantern with a large container, a smaller container, water and a few weights. The smaller vessel forms the opening; the gap between the containers freezes into the lantern wall. Add evergreen sprigs or berries if you like, then use a candle only with supervision or choose an outdoor-rated waterproof LED.

Choose a shape and light source

Option Best for Trade-off
Nested containers A lantern with a flat base, open center and optional foliage in the ice wall Needs two containers and weights; a staged freeze helps stabilize the base. Canadian Wildlife Federation instructions and HGTV’s tutorial describe this approach.
Balloon globe A hollow spherical lantern Requires a partial freeze, draining the liquid center, then freezing the shell again. Alaskan Ice Melters’ instructions describe this method.
Candle A traditional visible flame Requires supervision and distance from flammable materials and children. See Lee Valley’s mold instructions and HGTV’s safety guidance.
Waterproof outdoor LED Illumination without an open flame Use a light specifically rated for water or outdoor use; an ordinary battery light is not necessarily waterproof. See Alaskan Ice Melters and Wintercraft’s kit information.

What you need for a nested-container lantern

  • A large plastic bowl, tub or bucket, plus a smaller plastic cup or container that fits inside it.
  • Water, with room left at the top for expansion as it freezes.
  • Stones or other weights to keep the inner vessel centered and in place.
  • Optional evergreen sprigs, berries, leaves or citrus slices.
  • A tea light or an outdoor-rated waterproof LED that fits the opening.
  • A freezer with room for the mold, or outdoor temperatures cold enough to freeze the water.

Household containers are enough to make a lantern. A reusable ice lantern mold is an optional choice if you want a dedicated shape for repeat projects; the Wintercraft product page describes purpose-built kits and reusable molds.

How to make an ice lantern with nested containers

  1. Freeze a stable base. Pour a shallow layer of water into the large container and freeze it until solid. The Canadian Wildlife Federation guide suggests a base about 1 cm thick for small lanterns, or up to 3 cm for larger ones.
  2. Position the inner container. Set the smaller vessel in the center of the frozen base. Add stones or another weight so it stays centered and does not rest on the bottom.
  3. Fill the wall. Pour water into the gap between the containers, leaving space at the top for expansion. Add greenery or berries if desired, keeping the central opening clear so a light can sit level.
  4. Freeze until solid. Freezing time varies with the method, freezer and size. Lee Valley’s mold instructions give 12–24 hours depending on freezer settings; HGTV’s container tutorial says several hours or overnight. Treat those as examples, not a universal timer, and check that the ice has set.
  5. Release the mold gently. Pour a little warm water into the inner container to loosen it, then run warm water around the outside of the larger container. Remove both carefully rather than forcing the ice.
  6. Set out the lantern and add a light. Place it on a stable outdoor surface and choose a light that fits the opening. If using a candle, keep the flame away from combustible material and children, and never leave it unattended.

Optional alternative: a hollow balloon globe

For a spherical lantern, fill a balloon with water and freeze it until a hard outer shell forms while liquid remains inside. The Alaskan Ice Melters tutorial gives 4–5 hours for this partial freeze, followed by draining the center by popping the balloon over a sink or outdoors and freezing the hollow shell for another two hours. Those timings apply to that balloon method; they are not interchangeable with the nested-container timings. Check that liquid remains in the center before draining. The tutorial lists water-resistant LED lights or tea lights; use any flame with the same careful supervision required for a nested lantern.

Fix common ice-lantern problems

  • The inner cup floats or shifts: Add stones or other weights, and check that it remains centered as the water freezes.
  • The base breaks: Freeze the base fully before setting the weighted inner container on it.
  • Decorations drift into the opening: Use the frozen base to anchor the arrangement before filling the wall, or reposition pieces as freezing begins. Keep the center usable and level.
  • The lantern sticks to its mold: Run warm water around the inner or outer vessel gradually. Forcing the ice can break it.
  • The lantern sits unevenly: Water can expand unevenly as it freezes. Lee Valley’s instructions suggest leveling it on glass pebbles or river stones.
  • The lantern melts: It needs below-freezing outdoor conditions to remain frozen. How long it lasts depends on the ambient temperature and lantern size; the cited instructions do not promise a fixed display time.
