If your Samsung washer is holding water or showing a drain error, start by recording the full code and checking the drain hose. On a front-load model with a user-accessible debris filter, you can also follow the model’s emergency-drain and filter-cleaning instructions. Don’t force the filter open if water will not flow through the emergency drain tube; stop and arrange service instead.
What does the drain error code mean?
Samsung’s US support guide groups nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC and 1 5C among its no-drain error displays. The exact code and its meaning can vary by model, so check the complete display against your washer’s manual or Samsung’s model-specific support information. A code signals a drain problem; it does not, by itself, prove that the pump has failed.
Samsung technical support describes the error as occurring when the water level does not fall to its reset point within the specified drain period. One cited technical article gives a 15–30 minute threshold, but that timing may differ by model. It also notes that 1 5C applies to the upper washer on specified Flex models. Samsung technical support lists several possible causes, so use the code as a starting point rather than a parts diagnosis.
Check the drain hose and its installation
- Stop the cycle and inspect the hose. Look for a visible kink, crushing, or an obstruction that could prevent water from flowing.
- Compare the setup with the manual for your exact model. Hose routing and installation requirements are not universal across Samsung washers.
- Check for an airtight or overly deep standpipe connection only against model-specific guidance. For the WF337AAR, Samsung advises inserting the hose no more than six inches into the standpipe and warns that an airtight connection can cause siphoning. That six-inch measurement is specific to the cited model, not a general rule for every Samsung washer. Samsung’s WF337AAR guidance provides the model-specific instructions.
Clean the debris filter only if your front-loader has one
Not every Samsung washer has the same filter access or maintenance procedure. Samsung Canada’s instructions apply to eligible front-load models; confirm the steps and filter location in your model’s manual before opening a panel. The support article recommends cleaning the drain filter every 3–6 months, but the manual for your washer and region should guide your maintenance schedule. Prepare to drain the remaining water
- Switch off and unplug the washer as directed in the manual.
- Put on gloves and place a bath towel and a flat, wide container in front of the access area.
- Use the emergency drain tube to empty residual water before opening the debris filter. Samsung says approximately 1–2 liters may come out of the tube; a full drum can require more than one container.
Stop if the emergency drain tube is blocked
If no water comes from the emergency drain tube, do not force the filter open or continue the cleaning procedure. Samsung says the tube may be clogged or kinked and instructs users to call for service. Once water has drained normally, follow the instructions for your model to remove and clean the filter, then reinstall it securely.
When to request service
Arrange service if the washer still will not drain after you have checked the hose and, where applicable, cleaned the filter—or if the drain code returns. Samsung’s technical material lists possibilities including a blockage, loose or faulty pump or PCB wiring, a defective drain pump, and a defective main PCB. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your washer; the correct repair depends on the model and inspection.

A shallow drain pan, wide container, towel and gloves can help manage water during the approved emergency-drain procedure. They do not resolve a blocked drain or failed component. Avoid replacing a pump or other part based on the code alone.
