The first question is which AC fan has stopped: the indoor blower inside your furnace or air handler, or the outdoor condenser fan on top of the outdoor unit. They have different symptoms and causes. If the indoor blower is running but the outdoor unit is silent, the problem may involve outdoor power, the thermostat or controls, a contactor, capacitor, motor, or wiring. If the outdoor unit runs but little or no air comes from the indoor registers, investigate the indoor blower, filter, airflow, blower capacitor or motor, control board, or a frozen coil.

Start with the safe checks below. Do not keep running the air conditioner if the outdoor condenser fan is not turning: the compressor may overheat because the outdoor unit cannot reject heat properly.

First, identify which fan is stopped

What you observe More likely area of the fault What to do
Indoor air is blowing, but the outdoor unit is silent Outdoor breaker or disconnect, thermostat signal, contactor, capacitor, condenser-fan motor, wiring, or control component Turn cooling off and arrange a professional diagnosis if basic checks do not restore operation.
The outdoor unit runs, but little or no air comes from indoor registers Indoor blower motor or capacitor, dirty filter, blocked airflow, frozen evaporator coil, or indoor control board Check the filter and registers. Stop cooling if airflow is weak or ice is visible.
Neither indoor nor outdoor equipment operates Thermostat setting, power supply, breaker, fuse, wiring, or a control problem Check the thermostat and applicable breaker once, then stop if the breaker trips again.
The fan runs intermittently, slowly, or with a hum Capacitor, motor, overheating, electrical connection, or airflow problem Switch cooling off rather than repeatedly restarting the system.

A thermostat call normally starts the indoor blower and outdoor equipment according to the system’s controls. Some systems also have a built-in startup delay, so wait several minutes after changing the setting before deciding that nothing is happening. A fan that remains stopped, however, should not be treated as a normal delay indefinitely.

Seven common causes of an AC fan that will not spin

1. The thermostat is not calling for cooling

An incorrect thermostat mode or schedule is one of the simplest explanations. Confirm that the thermostat is set to Cool, not Off, Heat, or a schedule that has changed the setting. Set the target temperature several degrees below the current room temperature and allow time for the system’s normal delay.

Also check whether the thermostat display is blank. A battery-powered thermostat may need fresh batteries. A blank hard-wired thermostat can indicate lost power to the indoor unit, a blown low-voltage fuse, or another control problem.

Do not conclude that the thermostat has failed simply because the outdoor fan is not turning. A working thermostat call can be interrupted later by a breaker, disconnect, contactor, capacitor, motor, or wiring fault.

2. A breaker, fuse, disconnect, or other power supply has failed

Central AC equipment commonly has separate indoor and outdoor electrical circuits. The indoor furnace or air handler may still have power while the outdoor condenser circuit has lost it, or the reverse may be true. That can explain why one fan operates while the other does not.

From a safe position outside the electrical panel, look for a breaker that appears tripped. If there is no smoke, burning smell, water intrusion, exposed wiring, or other hazard, you may reset the applicable breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off. A repeated trip is a warning of an electrical or equipment fault, not a prompt to keep resetting it.

Do not remove the electrical-panel cover, open the condenser disconnect, or handle fuses or exposed terminals. If the outdoor unit has no power after a single reset, professional testing is required.

3. The run capacitor has failed

Many AC systems use run capacitors to provide the phase shift and starting or running assistance needed by the fan and compressor motors. When a capacitor is failing, the fan may hum without rotating, start slowly, run intermittently, or stop after the system warms up. Repeated clicking or an unusual attempt-to-start sound can also be useful information for a technician.

A capacitor can fail without obvious visible damage, and a swollen or leaking component is not something a homeowner should touch. It can retain a dangerous electrical charge even after the system is switched off. The correct replacement must match the equipment’s specifications; installing a visually similar but incorrectly rated part can damage the motor or create a safety hazard.

Do not push the fan blade with a stick or your hand to start it. This is not a safe repair and can cause injury or allow the compressor to run under damaging conditions.

4. The fan motor is seized, overheated, or burned out

An outdoor condenser-fan motor or indoor blower motor can fail because of age, worn bearings, overheating, electrical damage, or a mechanical obstruction. Clues can include excessive heat at the motor housing, a burning smell, intermittent operation, unusual noise, or a fan that turns only with difficulty when properly de-energized and inspected by a professional.

If the outdoor fan has stopped while the compressor continues operating, turn the cooling system off immediately. Without the condenser fan, heat cannot be removed effectively from the refrigerant circuit. Continuing to run the AC can turn a fan repair into a more expensive compressor or system repair.

Motor replacement is not a universal do-it-yourself part swap. Voltage, horsepower, rotation, shaft dimensions, mounting, wiring, and the equipment’s control requirements all have to match. Do not open the cabinet, oil the motor, or order a replacement based only on a photograph of the old part.

5. A contactor, relay, control board, fuse, or wire has failed

The fan itself may be sound but not receiving the electrical signal or power it needs. Possible faults include a condenser contactor, relay, low-voltage fuse, control board, terminal, corroded connection, loose wire, or damaged conductor. A thermostat signal may reach the equipment without the high-voltage switching component closing correctly.

These components require electrical diagnosis, often involving live-voltage testing. Never bypass a contactor, bridge thermostat terminals, or probe wiring as a casual test. Those actions can expose you to line voltage, short the control system, damage the equipment, or create an arc.

6. A dirty filter, blocked register, debris, or airflow restriction is causing trouble

Airflow problems are especially relevant when the outdoor unit runs but the indoor blower produces weak airflow, or when ice forms on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines. A heavily loaded filter, closed supply register, blocked return grille, dirty indoor coil, or obstructed blower can reduce airflow and contribute to overheating or coil freezing. Leaves, grass, and stored items around the outdoor condenser can also restrict heat transfer.

Check that supply registers and return grilles are open and unobstructed. If the filter is visibly dirty or overdue, replace it with the exact size and airflow rating specified for your system, and install it with the arrow pointing in the direction of airflow. Do not assume that a higher MERV rating is automatically better; a filter that is too restrictive for the equipment can reduce airflow. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.

If your filter is dirty, an HVAC air filter can be a practical maintenance replacement—provided you match the dimensions, airflow direction, and the MERV or equipment requirement rather than buying a generic filter by appearance alone.

With power to the outdoor equipment off using the normal controls, you may remove loose leaves or grass from around the outside of the condenser without removing panels. Keep clearance around the unit. Do not bend the fins, reach through the grille, or spray water into energized equipment.

7. The evaporator coil is frozen, or there is a refrigerant or airflow problem

Ice on the indoor evaporator coil or refrigerant lines can restrict airflow and make it appear that the blower has failed. A dirty filter, blocked airflow, or blower problem can contribute to freezing. Low refrigerant caused by a leak is another possibility. In that situation, adding refrigerant without finding the cause is not a complete repair.

Turn the cooling function off and let the ice thaw naturally. Never chip ice with a tool or use a heat source that could damage the equipment. If the blower is known to operate and the equipment manual permits it, a fan-only setting may help circulate air while the coil thaws; do not use this as a substitute for diagnosis when the blower is not working.

If ice returns, airflow remains weak, or refrigerant service is needed, switch the system off and call a qualified HVAC technician. Repeatedly operating with a frozen coil can worsen the underlying problem and may allow liquid refrigerant to return where it should not.

Safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Observe the symptoms without opening equipment. Determine whether the indoor blower, outdoor condenser fan, or both are stopped. Listen for silence, humming, clicking, or repeated starting attempts, but do not put your hands or tools near a fan.
  2. Verify the thermostat. Select Cool, lower the setpoint below room temperature, check the schedule or hold status, and confirm that the display is powered. Allow for the system’s normal delay.
  3. Check airflow. Inspect the return-air filter, replace it if dirty or overdue, and ensure that supply and return registers are open and not covered by furniture or stored items.
  4. Inspect the outdoor area. Remove loose leaves or grass around the condenser without removing panels or reaching through the grille. Keep stored objects away from the unit.
  5. Check the relevant breaker once. Reset it only if there is no obvious hazard. If it trips again, leave it off and stop troubleshooting.
  6. Look for ice. If ice is visible on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, turn cooling off and allow it to thaw. Do not chip or melt the ice aggressively.
  7. Shut the system down for dangerous symptoms. Burning smells, smoke, unusual electrical noise, exposed wiring, water near electrical equipment, or a very hot motor housing require immediate shutdown and professional service.
  8. Escalate if the outdoor fan still does not run. Keep cooling off and arrange a qualified HVAC diagnosis rather than repeatedly restarting the system.

What homeowners should not do

  • Do not run the AC with the outdoor condenser fan stopped.
  • Do not remove electrical covers or reach inside the furnace, air handler, disconnect, or condenser.
  • Do not touch, discharge, or replace a capacitor unless you are a properly trained and equipped professional.
  • Do not bypass a contactor or bridge thermostat terminals to force a test.
  • Do not kick-start a fan blade with a stick.
  • Do not replace a motor based only on a photograph or a generic part description.
  • Do not add refrigerant from a consumer can. Refrigerant handling is regulated in the United States under EPA Section 608, and refrigerants can present toxicity, flammability, asphyxiation, pressure, and physical hazards. Unapproved flammable substitutes, including products marketed as R-22a, can create fire or explosion risks in systems not designed for them.

When to call for professional service

Professional diagnosis is the right next step when a breaker trips again, the outdoor fan remains stopped after the basic checks, the motor hums or overheats, a capacitor or contactor is suspected, wiring or controls may be involved, or ice returns after thawing. Refrigerant leaks, low charge, compressor symptoms, and indoor coil problems also require appropriate tools and training.

Before calling, note which fan is stopped, whether the compressor or indoor blower appears to run, what sounds you hear, whether ice is present, whether a breaker tripped, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. A photograph of the equipment model and serial label can help a technician identify the system, but do not remove panels to obtain it.

Repair or replacement?

A thermostat setting, dirty filter, blocked register, or loose debris may be corrected by the homeowner. Capacitors, contactors, motors, control boards, wiring, refrigerant leaks, and compressor-related faults require diagnosis and repair by a qualified technician.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair cost depends on location, equipment age and type, warranty coverage, part availability, labor, and—most importantly—whether the initial diagnosis is correct. A capacitor or motor repair is not automatically a reason to replace the entire AC. Conversely, repeated major failures on an older or inefficient system may justify comparing repair with replacement. Ask for the diagnosed fault, the proposed part and labor, warranty terms, and the condition and expected service life of the rest of the system before approving major work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run my AC if the outdoor fan is not spinning?

No. Turn cooling off. A running compressor without the condenser fan can overheat and suffer additional damage. Have the system diagnosed rather than repeatedly resetting or restarting it.

Why is my outdoor AC fan not spinning but the indoor fan is running?

The thermostat may be calling for cooling while an outdoor breaker, disconnect, contactor, capacitor, condenser-fan motor, control component, or wire has failed. Check the thermostat and breaker once if safe, then keep cooling off and arrange service.

Why is my indoor AC fan not spinning while the outdoor unit runs?

Possible causes include a dirty filter or blocked airflow, a frozen evaporator coil, an indoor blower capacitor or motor failure, or an indoor control-board problem. Replace a dirty filter, check registers, turn cooling off if ice or weak airflow is present, and seek service if the blower does not operate.

How long should I wait after turning the thermostat to Cool?

Many systems have a normal startup or anti-short-cycle delay. Wait several minutes, but do not treat an outdoor fan that remains stopped, repeated clicking, humming, or a tripped breaker as a normal delay.

Is a bad capacitor safe to replace myself?

No. Capacitors can retain a dangerous charge after power is switched off, and the correct electrical rating must match the equipment. Capacitor testing and replacement should be performed by a qualified technician.

The Bottom Line

Identify whether the indoor blower or outdoor condenser fan has stopped, then check only the thermostat, filter, registers, visible outdoor obstructions, and a breaker once. If the outdoor fan is not turning, switch off cooling. A capacitor, motor, contactor, control, wiring, frozen coil, or refrigerant fault needs professional diagnosis—and opening the equipment can expose you to dangerous electricity or refrigerant.
