But a chart of equipment shipments does not show how many systems were installed or how many homes use them. The exact chart referenced by this headline cannot be identified from the title alone, so its source and date range need confirmation before drawing conclusions from its trend.
What a heat-pump shipment chart measures
If the chart uses Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) data, it measures equipment shipped to U.S. customers—not completed installations, household adoption, or the number of homes heated by heat pumps. AHRI aggregates reports from participating manufacturers, describes the measure as a transfer of ownership, and notes that figures may be revised. Its monthly reports are generally published about two months after the shipment period. A December year-to-date total represents the full calendar year. That distinction matters when reading a rising or falling line. Shipments can indicate movement in the equipment market, but they are not a direct count of installations or a measure of household prevalence. The title alone does not establish that the chart uses AHRI data, or which years it covers; those details should be checked against the original chart and its caption.
What products may be included
AHRI’s central-air-conditioner and air-source heat-pump historical categories include ducted and non-ducted equipment. Its split air-cooled heat-pump category includes ductless products. Window and wall room air conditioners are outside those central air-conditioner and air-source heat-pump categories. A chart’s scope therefore depends on the series it selects; it should not be read as a count of every kind of room cooling equipment. AHRI lists its historical equipment categories.

Why homeowners and builders consider heat pumps
One system can heat and cool
An air-source heat pump moves heat rather than producing heat through electric resistance. It can provide heating and cooling, which can make it a useful option in new construction or when replacing aging heating and cooling equipment. The practical fit depends on the home, equipment selection, and local energy costs. The U.S. Department of Energy explains heat-pump systems.
Potential savings depend on the home and the replacement
DOE’s February 14, 2024 summary of peer-reviewed national-laboratory research reported that, for over 90% of the American households assessed, replacing worn-out heating equipment with a heat pump matched to the home’s needs would save on energy bills. This is a conditional research result, not a promise that every household will save: it concerns the assessed homes, a replacement of worn-out equipment, and appropriate equipment matching. DOE also says older electric-resistance heating requires at least twice as much energy to keep a home warm as a heat pump. That comparison is specifically with electric-resistance heating; it does not establish the same savings against every furnace or other heating system. How to read the chart without overclaiming
- Check the source and date range. Confirm the chart’s data provider, series definition, units, and years before describing a trend. The headline does not identify them.
- Call AHRI figures shipments. Do not relabel shipments as installations, sales to homeowners, or homes adopting heat pumps.
- Compare like with like. If the chart compares heat pumps with gas furnaces or shows year-over-year movement, check that the periods and units match.
- Separate market activity from household benefits. A shipment trend does not itself demonstrate savings, system performance, or the share of homes using heat pumps.
- Allow for revisions. AHRI says its participating-member aggregates can change as data is updated.
What happened to the federal air-source heat-pump tax credit?
ENERGY STAR describes a federal credit for qualifying air-source heat pumps purchased and installed from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025: 30% of project cost, up to $2,000. It also identifies a 2025 Most Efficient eligibility pathway. That stated qualifying period has ended. Check current federal law and applicable state or utility programs before relying on an incentive; availability and eligibility can vary.
