The right bedroom window treatment depends on whether you need darkness for sleep, daytime privacy, filtered daylight, a view, or a combination. No single option is best for every room, and “blackout” fabric alone does not guarantee a dark room if light leaks around the edges. This guide compares 26 treatment types, variants, and combinations using those practical trade-offs; it is not an independently tested ranking, and prices and durability vary by product.
For a first shortlist, consider cellular shades for potential insulation benefits, a room-darkening shade or drapery layer for sleep, and cordless operation wherever young children may be present. Compare a specific product’s fit, materials, operating mechanism, warranty, and current price before buying.
How to Compare Bedroom Treatments
Start with the room’s main need: sleep darkness, privacy after dark, daytime privacy, a view, or temperature management. Then check whether the treatment suits the window’s operation and mounting depth. Casement and awning windows may work better with outside mounts so the treatment does not interfere with access; check the window manufacturer’s warranty before drilling or installing an inside mount, as Pella advises.
The table summarizes general trade-offs, not test scores. Cost and build quality are product-specific: the available sources do not provide comparable current prices or durability testing across these options.

| Option | Light, privacy, and view | Other considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal blinds | Tilting slats adjust light, privacy, and view; slats are not a fabric blackout layer. | Check window fit, operation, and cleaning needs. |
| Vertical blinds | Rotating slats adjust light and privacy across wide openings. | Common for sliding doors; check that the stack does not obstruct access. |
| Between-the-glass blinds | Slats adjust light and privacy while remaining between window panes. | They stay out of the room and are less exposed to dust; check compatibility with the window unit. |
| Roman shades | Fabric folds into pleats when raised; lining affects light control and privacy. | Outside mounting can help preserve access to some windows. |
| Cellular or honeycomb shades | Fabric opacity and fit affect light and privacy. | Cells trap air; energy performance varies with climate, season, attachment, and use. |
| Roller shades | Fabric rolls around a tube; opacity depends on the chosen fabric. | A dual system can pair independently operated fabrics with different opacities, according to Hunter Douglas. |
| Curtains | Lightweight panels typically filter light rather than block it. | Pair with a room-darkening layer for more flexibility. |
| Drapes | Heavier, often lined panels can provide more light blocking than lightweight curtains. | Pella describes drapes as offering more insulation and light blocking than curtains; results depend on the product and fit. |
| Shutters | Movable louvers adjust light and privacy. | Fixed architectural treatment; panel and louver fit affect light leakage. |
| Sheer or view-through shades | Can diffuse light while retaining some outward view. | Do not treat sheers alone as nighttime blackout or guaranteed privacy. |
| Room-darkening or blackout fabric | Can reduce light passing through the fabric. | Mounting and edge coverage matter; fabric alone does not ensure a dark room. |
| Light-filtering fabric | Softens daylight rather than making the room dark. | Consider a separate room-darkening layer if sleep darkness is important. |
26 Options, Variants, and Combinations
The following list treats fabric choices, operating styles, mounting systems, and layered combinations as distinct options for comparison. It does not imply that all 26 are separate product categories or that they have been independently tested against one another.
- Horizontal blinds. Tilting slats let you adjust light, privacy, and view. They are not a fabric blackout solution by default.
- Vertical blinds. Rotating vertical slats are a common option for wide windows and sliding doors. Check where the panels stack so they do not obstruct access.
- Between-the-glass blinds. These place adjustable slats between window panes, keeping the treatment out of the room and less exposed to dust. Confirm that the window unit supports them.
- Roman shades. Fabric folds into pleats when raised. The lining determines much of the light control, and outside mounting may help preserve window access.
- Cellular or honeycomb shades. Their cells trap air and may help with insulation. DOE’s 2019 presentation describes them among the most effective examined for reducing HVAC energy in heating-dominated climates; that does not guarantee the same result in every home.
- Roller shades. Fabric rolls around a tube, with light control depending on fabric opacity and fit.
- Dual roller shades. Two independently operated fabrics can offer different levels of opacity in one system, according to Hunter Douglas. Check the specific configuration before purchase.
- Light-filtering cellular shades. These soften daylight rather than aiming for complete darkness. Add a room-darkening layer if needed.
- Room-darkening cellular shades. A less translucent fabric can reduce light through the shade; gaps at the edges can still admit light.
- Blackout cellular shades. Blackout fabric can block light through the shade, but mounting and edge coverage still affect room darkness.
- Light-filtering roller shades. These provide a simple way to soften daylight; they are not intended to deliver blackout conditions.
- Room-darkening roller shades. Choose opacity based on how much daylight you want to reduce and check the fitted product’s coverage.
- Blackout roller shades. Blackout fabric reduces light through the material, but light can leak around the shade unless the installation addresses the edges.
- Sheer or view-through shades. These can diffuse daylight and preserve some outward view. They are not a substitute for a nighttime privacy or blackout layer.
- Sheer curtains. Lightweight panels soften daylight. Sheers alone should not be relied on for nighttime privacy or sleep darkness.
- Room-darkening curtains. A heavier or lined panel may reduce light, depending on its fabric, fullness, and how it covers the window.
- Blackout curtains. These are a flexible room-darkening layer. Coverage at the sides, top, and bottom matters as much as the fabric label.
- Drapes. Heavier, often lined panels can provide more insulation and light blocking than lightweight curtains, as Pella’s guidance notes. Product and installation details affect results.
- Roman shades with a room-darkening lining. This combines a fabric-fold shade with a lining intended to reduce incoming light. Check how the lining and mount cover the opening.
- Cellular shades paired with drapery. A shade and a heavier outer layer give you separate controls for daylight and nighttime coverage.
- Roller shades paired with curtains. The shade handles the window opening while curtains add another layer; the result depends on opacity and edge coverage.
- Sheer curtains paired with room-darkening panels. This combination allows a softer daytime layer and a more private, darker layer for night.
- Shutters. Movable louvers provide adjustable light and privacy in a fixed architectural treatment. Do not assume they eliminate all light leakage.
- Outside-mounted treatment. Mounting outside the frame can help avoid interfering with access on some casement or awning windows. Check the window model’s instructions and warranty before drilling.
- Inside-mounted treatment. This keeps the treatment within the frame where depth and hardware allow. Verify the available mounting depth and whether the treatment interferes with locks or window operation.
- Cordless treatment. Cordless operation is a safety-focused choice when young children may be present. Confirm the operating mechanism and safety information for the exact product.
Light Leakage and Window Fit
A fabric advertised as blackout cannot by itself ensure that the whole room becomes dark. Light may pass around the sides or top, depending on the mount and coverage. Sources describe systems with side channels as a way to reduce those gaps, but the available research does not include comparative blackout tests.

Insulation, Cost, and Build Quality
Cellular shades are worth considering when insulation is a priority because their cells trap air. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2019 presentation reports them among the most effective window attachments examined for reducing HVAC energy in heating-dominated climates. Outcomes depend on climate, season, installation, and how the shade is operated, so this is not a universal performance promise.

Child Safety
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says cordless window coverings are the safest option when young children are present, and that only cordless coverings eliminate the window-covering cord strangulation hazard. If replacement is not possible, CPSC advises keeping beds, cribs, and furniture away from cords, shortening dangling pull cords, ensuring cord stops are installed, and anchoring continuous-loop cords. These steps reduce risk but do not eliminate it. CPSC also advises immediate replacement of most blinds sold before November 2000 because inner cords can form an entangling loop.

CPSC reported that about nine children under 5 die on average each year from strangulation in window coverings with cords. Its 2023 release also reported more than 200 incidents involving children up to age 8 from January 2009 through December 2021, with a child dying in 48% of those incidents. These figures are from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

- Identify the main need. Decide whether darkness, daytime privacy, a view, filtered light, or insulation matters most.
- Check the window. Note how it opens, available mounting depth, hardware, and whether a treatment could interfere with access or operation.
- Choose a suitable type and layer. Compare the trade-offs above; combine a light-filtering treatment with a room-darkening layer if one product cannot meet both needs.
- Compare specific products. Review material, construction, operating mechanism, warranty, current price, and installation costs. Do not infer durability from the treatment category alone.
- Prioritize cordless operation around young children. If an existing corded covering remains, follow CPSC’s risk-reduction guidance while recognizing that it does not eliminate the hazard.
- Verify mounting instructions. Check the window manufacturer’s warranty before drilling, and make sure the installed treatment leaves the window operable and accessible.

Do blackout shades make a room completely dark?
Not necessarily. Blackout fabric can block light through the material, but light may still enter around the edges. Mounting and coverage affect the result, and the available sources do not provide comparative blackout test results.
Are cellular shades good for insulation?
They are worth considering because their cells trap air. DOE’s 2019 presentation describes cellular shades among the most effective examined for reducing HVAC energy in heating-dominated climates, but results vary with climate, season, attachment, and operation.
What window coverings are safest when young children are present?
CPSC says cordless coverings are the safest option and the only option that eliminates the window-covering cord strangulation hazard. If replacing an existing covering is not possible, follow CPSC’s cord-risk reduction guidance; it reduces but does not eliminate risk.
Can I install a treatment inside a casement or awning window frame?
It depends on the window. Pella advises that casement and awning windows may be better suited to outside-mounted treatments so access is not obstructed. Check the actual window model’s instructions and warranty before drilling or installing an inside mount.
How much do bedroom window treatments cost?
Costs depend on the product, materials, size, controls, and installation. The research for this guide does not establish comparable current price ranges, so compare dated prices for the specific products and location you are considering.
