“The Embassy” is the nickname for Drake’s Toronto mansion, not a claim that the house is an actual embassy. Its monumental limestone exterior, Beaux-Arts references and highly customized interiors help explain the name’s imposing, almost institutional feel. Architectural Digest reported the home at 50,000 square feet, but its 2020 feature does not verify the title’s $100 million figure as either construction cost or current value.
Why the house is called “The Embassy”
Architectural Digest uses “The Embassy” as the name for Drake’s Toronto home. The feature does not describe it as a working embassy or establish a separate origin story for the nickname. The design itself offers a likely explanation for its resonance: a grand, formal exterior and spaces built to feel monumental rather than like an ordinary private residence.
Drake told the magazine that he wanted the house to have “a monumental scale and feel.” His stated ambition was for the structure to stand firm for 100 years; that is his aspiration, not an engineering certification or guarantee.
What makes the design feel monumental
A limestone exterior with Beaux-Arts influence
Architectural Digest reported that the home takes cues from traditional Beaux-Arts architecture, translated into a cleaner contemporary form. Designer Ferris Rafauli described it as “a proper 19th-century limestone mansion,” while noting that its exterior profiles are more minimal and its lines cleaner. Limestone, bronze and exotic woods contribute to the substantial, formal character; the feature contrasts these materials with stucco, paint and faux-gold finishes.

Interiors built around scale and detail
The magazine reported a 44-foot-high great room, where a bespoke Bösendorfer concert grand piano was designed in collaboration with Takashi Murakami and Rafauli. A Metropolitan chandelier made with more than 20,000 hand-cut Swarovski crystal pieces hangs in the space. Architectural Digest called it the second largest of its kind in the world; that is the magazine’s description, not an independently verified ranking.
Other reported finishes include Nero Marquina marble and macassar ebony. The master-bedroom suite measures 3,200 square feet, with 1,100 square feet of covered terraces. Its Hästens x Ferris Rafauli Grand Vividus bed and base weigh roughly one ton, according to the feature. The adjoining master bath has a 4,000-pound tub carved from a single block of black marble.
